Alexander, thanx again for your help. <dtml-var "PARENTS[0][PARENTS[0].id +'_' + PARENTS[1].id + '_p1']"> is the right idea, but for some reason it's just quoting the HTML....I must admit I'm curious to know why the "PARENTS[0]" is used twice. <dtml-var "PARENTS[0].id +'_' + PARENTS[1].id + '_p1'"> seemed to make more sense to me, but it just returned the string that needed to be replaced. I'd also managed to get the same result (sting, no substitution) with <dtml-with id> <dtml-var "id+'_'"><dtml-var "PARENTS[1].id+'_p1'"> </dtml-with> Although I have no idea what difference the "id" in the <dtml-with id> makes. Zope intro at PLUG in Philadelphia 10/6

Hi folks Thanks for your very full and thoughtful replies. I am sorry I have not responded sooner, but I was called away from the office on a personal matter... Reading your replies, the thing that most concerns me is the question of how to get around the limitations of CGI. I'm afraid that I am not up to speed yet on all the details of the different approaches. Can some kind person please spell out the alternatives, with their pros and cons? If speed and scalability is the priority, what is the recommended approach? >From the tone of the thread, it looks as if things are moving towards FastCGI. Actually, id is a method on _documents_, but an attribute of most other objects, including folders, mail hosts, etc. -- but interestingly not image uploads or the Application object. I can't find where the document's id() method is defined -- difficult to do a grep here, "id" pops up everywhere! -- so I can't explain it. I imagine "folder.method" will mean the method object rather than a call but is it possible that "folder.method()" can be made equivalent to "folder.method(_.None, _)"???? Or would this screw somthing up fundamental?

I think the idea of the import tag. If you had something like <dtml-import "imports.folder"> Then it would add it to the bottom of the namespace stack so that if aquisition failed the name lookup would try your "imported" location. Will this work the way I propose? Import might not be the best name? I think this would make things a lot nicer for people and be a whole lot more intuitive than the above.

However there would need to be more meta data kept about the properties to determine how to represent it well, eg a textarea for a string property is ofter more appropriate than a simple input box. To do this, perhaps each property could have an optional edit field where you can put in property name inpedendent html that would render an edit widget for a single property. If fact now that I'm on the topic. Why are properties and and objects/methods so seperate? It seems to me what I'm describing above is creating a speciaiztion of a simple object type (ie string) with a different render or edit method. What aren't properties objects? What can't objects be extended in an as-hoc manner. Why can't complex objects such as an XML document exist as a property and be changed/viewed in the same way as any property on a property sheet? Why can't I copy/rename/delete any property like I can a method. I see the difference between methods and properties as a organizational one rather than a logical one.

Be careful what you ask for. :) This may be what you want: <dtml-var "PARENTS[1].id"> This should also answer your question about "a compound call". The nesting qualifier in Python and Zope is the dot ("."). Note that Zope expressions are Python expressions. Some things are attributes, others are functions. While <dtml-var title_or_id> gives you the title or ID of the document or associated object, this is because Zope knows how to call functions. On the other hand, <dtml-var "title_or_id"> will give the string representation of the title_or_id() function (something like <function title_or_id at 8f5288>). Instead, use: <dtml-var "title_or_id()"> This goes for a lot of things. Note that id is an attribute, not a function. Doing "id()" ain't valid. Also note that "dtml-var" only "renders" stuff. If you want to call something with parameters, you need to use "dtml-call". For example: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('Foo', 1)"> But you can also do: <dtml-call MyObject> ...assuming MyObject is callable; ie., it's either (a) a function, or (b) a class instance implementing the Python __call__() method.
