Creating tables from ZSQL methods..?

I have a ZSQL method, createClassTable, where the paramter 'classCode' is used to name the table: create table <dtml-sqlvar classCode type=string> ( matric float, fname varchar, lname varchar, .. etc ) Is there anyway to execute this in a DTML document 'on the fly'? I have a DTML method where the classCode argument is passed onto the ZSQL method via a web form... but when submitted I am met with Zope interface and asked to enter the query parameter. What I am trying to do: The user will click 'Submit' - and a table is created... the NEXT generated screen will be a view of the database, where he can edit content via web forms, etc. How do I execute the query and go to this view screen in one go? Creating a ZSearchInterface on my ZSQL method has given me a few ideas... but all of them have their problems. Can anyone offer any solutions? how can you tell who created an object in Zope?

I have started building asset management/role-based publishing system for multimedia application. It struck me that I could not tell who created objects in the first place. I see in undoable_transaction "user_name" by following UndoForm. I was building author into a few Z classes we fashioned for each multimedia type. Then, why bother because I have seen in UndoForm the user name of each undoable action. So, I backed out and started looking to see if there is pre-built in Zope. What I would like is to be able to tell who created an object? Is there an easy way to do this? Perhaps, I need to stare at undoLog?

I still got it under construction. Zope shouldn't work with Python 1.6 so I removed the package and downloaded the python 1.5.2 sources you ./configure --with-thread to have threads enabled and that's it. Runs beautifully but I didn't have time to install Zope so far. It's running very well under OBSD 2.7 but that version has a python 1.5.2 package. Viel Spass! I'll give it a try: Normally you talk about multi tier applications, when talking about something like zPatterns. Say you want to make a website where users can write articles and comments, like Slashdot. Then in asp, or to a lesser degree Zope you will write your application in some sort of template language. VBScript or dtml. New programmers will mix together persistence, presentation and logic all over the place. That is a bad idea. When you get a little better at programming you make classes that handles database connections, classes that handles the business logic and classes that handles the layout. So in this case you will make a user table in your SQL database, an article table and a comment table. Then you will make some logic to controll it, and some code to view it. This is a three tier system. zPatterns adds a few more tiers and sugar on top. Normally in Zope you would make an folderish article Python product or zClass that can contain comments. And also you would make a Python product or zClass for users. Saving their names, email, webadresses, list of articles or whatever. All fine and dandy. But say instead of using the ZODB for storing user data that you want to use the database that the company allready have with employees??? You would have to rewrite your Python product or zClass from scratch. To avoid this zPatterns use an anbstraction of a table called a "Rack". If you define this Rack how it is implemented at the backend doesn't matter. It can be an SQL database, or saved in the ZODB. The important thing is that you allways acces the Rack the same way so any other part of your application don't have to change when you change storage backend. Often you want to look at data in different ways. You have your database, your logic, and different ways to look at the data. This is called the "Model View Controller" principle in standard Geek talk. You use it to avoid duplication of data. The "DRY" principle (Don't Repeat Yourself). When I see an article I also want see all comments made to this article. Furthermore when I see a user, I also want to see the comments that this user has made and all the articles that he has written. Naturally you don't just copy the list of comment's to the article or the user. This would cause redundancy and bad problems when you change values in the original data. You make a new combined view of your model instead, where you join articles and comments on one page. So data from two different racks can be viewed in one place. In zPattern lingo this is called a "Specialist". But a "view" by any other name still smells as sweet. To use these two nice abstractions in Zope it has to work a little more Zope like. Often when making a zClass you use a folderish object. the zPattern folder is called a "PlugIn". It can have properties just like a normal zClass. In zPatterns the interface or "property sheet" used for handling the values in a single item in a rack. (What would be a single row in an SQL table) is called an "AttributeProvider". When you combine the content of one or more racks into a new Specialist (or view, remmeber?) you use a "SheetProvider" to edit the data. This is what would be a normal management interface in a typical web application. Anyhoo, this is how I unerstand it. But I must add that I have never used zPatterns, This is all from how I understand the documentation, the Wiki etc combined with my limited knowledge of computer science. Hope this helps. skinscript and ZSQL

Hi all, I'm trying to use Gadfly as storage for a Zpatterns rack. With the following skinscript trigger I can view records in the database. But I can't insert a new one. WHEN OBJECT ADDED CALL sqlInsertProduct() WITH QUERY lookup_product(client_name=self.id) COMPUTE client_name,email,rate,last_payment,primary,services Where: sqlInsertProduct is a zsql method. args: client_name email rate last_payment primary services Query template: INSERT INTO clienttracker_table (client_name, email, rate, last_payment, primary, services) VALUES ( '<dtml-var client_name>', '<dtml-var email>', '<dtml-var rate>', '<dtml-var last_payment>', '<dtml-var primary>', '<dtml-var services>' ) lookup_product is a zsql method. args: client_name Query template: select * from clienttracker_table where <dtml-sqltest client_name type=string> client_name,email,rate,last_payment,primary,services are fields of the table clienttracker_table and properties of the dataskin. If I remove "=self.id" from the trigger I am able to add a record to the db through the trigger. Without "=self.id" in the trigger I am unable to view the records in the db. I noticed in a post today that said ... you should probably choose some attribute other than 'id' as the attribute to check for your DataSkin. The 'id' attribute is always there... Objects are loaded by accessing attribute client_name and I still get the "object already exists" error. Questions: -Should I just create the record directly with the zsql method? That would defeat the purpose of using ZPatterns. -How do I eliminate the "already exists" error Zope version: Zope 2.2.1 Python version: 1.5.2 System Platform: freebsd4 -Aaron

After writing, I recognized that we make only restricted use of SiteRoots: we just change the host part but not the path part. As a result, the URL's only differ in the host part. The locally (wrt. the host) absolute URL's of an object are equal for all virtual domains. Therefore, removing the host part works out restricted use. The general case, where the path part is different for each virtual host, is more difficult. I would probably go for a separate catalog for each virtual host and ensure that the URL's with which the objects are indexed are the URL's for this virtual host. This may require, that indexing is done in this same virtual host environment.
