I hope I can put my own comments to shame in the future by committing some of my resources to the Python effort. As for the types-SIG, I've read through Guido's latest proposal, and found it so-so; I have some comments about the syntax -- which IMHO is heading in the right direction, but I feel it's still quite unpolished, like the new "decl" keyword and the very odd, un-Pythonic "->" operator. Other than that, it looks a lot like I had in mind myself. Interestingly enough, I'm discussing this with Jon Udell on his Byte newsgroups (go news.cmpnet.com) I'll quote something I wrote in this discussion, slightly edited for clarity: <quote> I can't easily tell Zope that objects of type A refers to objects of type B (mutual relationships), and that objects of type B should not be deletable as long as an object of type A is referring to it (referential integrity). The only kind of relationship Zope knows about is containment, a parent-child relationship. There is simply no other way for an object to refer to another object. Consider the case of news articles. Let's say articles should be able to hold multiple sections of text, as well as images. So far, with these solutions, we'll survive. Cracks begin to show when we start thinking about organizing authors, publications, and document flow. Zope doesn't provide a framework to solve this things. Equally worse is that the ZODB hierarchy is so easily polluted with things that don't belong there. You end up putting a lot of objects in the root folder because they're needed globally -- and anyone who has used Zope will tell you that a folder becomes unwieldy and disorganized when it grows past 20+ objects. (Case in point: Personally, several of my Zope sites have a root-level Utils folder containing oft-used External Methods, because they tend to pollute the whole namespace.) Zope needs a multiple-root, "multihomed" hierarchy. Hey, do it again! :-) What you cite above may mirror the effect of an enumerated type, but it doesn't contain any meta-information about the type itself: That is, FOO, BAR, BAZ are integers. They will fit into any integer expression and can be passed to any function taking integer arguments. The function won't balk if you pass a value from another "enumeration". Another problem with the above is that there is no way to ask Python to enumerate the values or names in the sequence, because its values are part of the top-level namespace -- I don't like that kind of namespace pollution. server side includes

Hi, I am new to Zope, and having some trouble. I imported my directory structure into zope, but zope doesn't recognize server side includes...for example,  I get the error: Unexpected tag, for tag ...... Is there a way to get zope to recognize server side includes? Thanks, Jessica

socket problem

When I try to start Z Server i get the following error messages: File "/WWW/Docs/product_development/teams/AMD_framework/dev/Zope/ZServer/medusa/asyncore.py", line 205, in bind return self.socket.bind (addr) socket.error: (98, 'Address already in use') I don't use the number 98 in any address or port (http=80, ftp='' and monitor='') so what could this error be about ?

Accessing methods with the debugger

Hi, I have the following python Class in MyTest module: import DocumentTemplate class Test: index_html = DocumentTemplate.HTMLFile('test_form.dtml') def __init__(self): ... ... def mymethod(self): return 'Hello' In my DoTest.py module i have: import MyTest t=MyTest.Test() If I run: python /usr/local/zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/Test.py DoTest t i get the correct output (a html file with http header). but if I try: python /usr/local/zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/Test.py DoTest t/mythod i get the following error message: *************************** Status: 404 Not Found ... <H2>Zope Error</H2> <P>Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. </P> <P><STRONG>Resource not found</STRONG></P> Sorry, the requested Zope resource does not exist.<p>Check the URL and try again.<p>  ... ************************** I really don't know what is my mistake. I'm pretty sure that mymethod is a method of the Test class. I can also access to the variable index_html of the Test class, so why am I unable to access Test instance methods this way? Actually, I also tried the example in the Zen HowTo: The (old) Product API Tutorial. Is there now another way to call a python class instance method with the debugger?

condional client-side code

Ideas please - how to do this. I'm using zope in frames and need some output to be condionally there depending on what the window name is. The idea is for client-side code to decide whether or not its displaying in a frame and output a header if needed. The only way I know to do this is with javascript "if (window.name=="whatever")" etc. on the client side. What makes is messy is having to hand-process the stuff that's on the "then" part to put it in document.write() calls. This is quite messy because there's quotes and all sorts in it. It would be nice to write document.write("<dtml-var whatever>") but because of messy chars and returns and so in in the "whatever" document it doesn't work. Also, its really desirable to be able to have "whatever" in just one place and use it in different ways in different documents. My current thinking is - "is there some way I could process the contents on "whatever" on the fly so that it would work with document.write? Any other ways to do what I want? No. I mean that setting a production flag on the zope server and let all error messages goes silent. It will be very difficult and troublesome to keep track of all errors. Just because some one have make a rename on one of my object, or the object is being modify and thus not available. Also, are there anyway to remove all the manage things from a production site? there are a few of howtos in Zope which use structure text were broken. I dont remember all of them, but the one with date and sql is (I still can not read it). BTW, I think structure text should be not be used in current way. I think a good use of structure text is to use it convert from/to. Instead of publish. A greate tool but in bad use. Rgs, Kent Sin.
