That is a dtml-if caveat! The dtml-if documentation says that dtml-if caches its variable value to save time, in case the variable is in fact a function that takes long to call. What happens in your case: <dtml-if local_css> looks up "local_css" and because it is callable, it gets called (i.e. rendered). The result is a string. This string is bound to "local_css" inside the <dtml-if>...</dtml-if>. Therefore, "local_css.absolute_url" results in the error you observed. You can replace <dtml-if local_css> by <dtml-if "_.has_key(local_css)">. This will not be equivalent to "<dtml-if local_css>" but good enough for your purpose. If you want to emulate it more faithfull, you could use: <dtml-if "_.has_key(local_css) and _['local_css']"> This is equivalent ot "<dtml-if local_css>" with the exception of the caching. Dieter

To use CSS file, I put the following line in the head of HTML files: <dtml-if local_css> <link href="<dtml-var "local_css.absolute_url()">" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> </dtml-if> Where "local_css" is a DTML document containing CSS style sheet. But the DTML generates the following error message: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: 'string' object has no attribute 'absolute_url' If I strip the <dtml-if protection, the code works OK. Why is the DTML document local_css changed into a string after <dtml-if>?

can I suppress newlines/whitespace in DocumentTemplates?

I'm starting to use DTML to generate plain text output. Generally speaking, the amount of DTML used to represent a particular chunk of output is much longer than the output itself. For instance, something like <dtml-var "_['start'].strftime('%m/%d%y')"><dtml-if "start != end"-->-<dtml-var "_['end'].strftime('%m/%d%y')"></dtml-if--> will expand to something as short as 9/25/00 or 9/25/00-9/26/00 I'd like to structure my DTML so it is vaguely readable: <dtml-var "_['start'].strftime('%m/%d%y')"> <dtml-if "start != end"--> -<dtml-var "_['end'].strftime('%m/%d%y')"> </dtml-if--> This means inserting newlines and doing some indenting. Unfortunately, since I'm generating plain text, the newlines and indentation count (unlike with HTML). Is it possible to tell the formatter to either ignore whitespace around the current location or turn off implicit whitespace rendering altogether? <dtml-comment> seems like overkill and would add a lot of <tags> to the total amount of text my eyes have to analyze. If it matters, I'm using Zope 2.2.1. I'm currently using the DocumentTemplate.HTMLFile class, but could easily change if one of the others provides more convenient default behavior. flat file db, favorite links, and zope

Hi, I have a comma delimited file which holds favorite links info for my site and is used by Perl to display and add new ones. I want to use something Zope related but don't know Zope that well yet (don't know Perl much but enough to recycle another's script). Anyway, I have all of these links in a file and don't want to loose them. I would like to continue to allow site visitors to add to the list (selecting their own categories, etc) and have the db managed easily my me. What are my best options? Should I use some sort of Zope product to handle this? If so, does one of them allow me to use my existing db file (at least import it)? I could, I suppose run Perl via Zope if I had to but there must be a better way (I would not be sure how to do this either). Any advice would be appreciated. --Sean

More Import Problems

As a horrid workaround for the earlier problem with Z-classes I exported all of my data, restarted Zope and am re-importing, or would like to re-import data, but some of it won't import back into the same install that it came from. I re-imported the products and then want to re-import the parts of the site.... Import Problems

Here's another try at getting this question addressed.... I have 2 Zope installs. On the newer one (2.2.1) when I try to import KM Net News (to install in the products list) I get the following error. Note I previously deleted KM Net News (the earlier version) but think that Zope might have gotten killed right in the middle of the delete and not completely deleted the product. Is there any way to get rid of the Class ID KMYear that does not show up in any way through the interface? zope crashing unexplicably, also not releasing ports

hello, i've been using zope for about 6 months now and have had this re- occurring problem with it randomly crashing. *worse part about it is that the port isn't released when it crashes*. this means we can't use the same startup script to get zope back up, can't make any cron jobs to check for availability , and must do it manually. it crashes about every 1-10 days and needs to be restarted on a different port. for example, just yesterday the machines were rebooted, and today ( after approx 11,000 hits ) it crashed. i checked the logfile, but nothing out of the ordinary was in there. i even put in the last couple of entries to see if there was a problem. i thought it started happening when i moved the data from MySQL to Oracle, but it could have been that it was only being used by me during the development. so take this with a grain of salt. my dtml code is very plain - whatever someone learns in a week of pouring over the docs that are available. nothing fancy at all. == Question has anyone had experience with this problem? at some point i'd like to get apache running on the servers for some other cgi stuff. should i just start getting apache configured for zope and forget the zserver? would this be a more stable environment? thanks, david ps, system and traceback included below ======================================= == System Sun Enterprise 450 multiple processors SunOS 5.7 lots of RAM Zope 2.1.6 ZOracleDA 2.1.0 Oracle 8i using 8i setup file == Traceback mclaren 11 % ./start -P 9500 & [1] 19746 mclaren 12 % -P 9500 Traceback (innermost last): File "/opt/zope/Zope-2.1.6-src/z2.py", line 493, in ? logger_object=lg) File "/opt/zope/Zope-2.1.6-src/ZServer/medusa/http_server.py", line 552, in __ init__ self.bind ((ip, port)) File "/opt/zope/Zope-2.1.6-src/ZServer/medusa/asyncore.py", line 205, in bind return self.socket.bind (addr) socket.error: (125, 'Address already in use') [1] Done ./start -P 9500
