Can anybody help with a problem I'm having. I've just started using Zope and I'm developing a reasonably simple intranet. The point at which I'm having problems is trying to write a dynamic navigation bar. I have a dtml method called from my standard header which will display certain blocks of dtml dependent on the id of the containing folder. This works fine when the documents are contained in a one folder system, but I have a folder with sub-folders and I would like to be able to display some dtml based on the main folders id. Sure thats clear but hoping for a response so..... Reformatting <dtml-tree>

Very simple, you'd think.. How does one insert an extra (blank) row in a dtml tree, based on a change of property value? Alternatively, how does one alter a value originally defined in a dtml let statement? I'm wanting to group items in the tree, visually. Hi everyone, I just finished reading Michael Yuan's article in the November issue of Linux Journal (article available online at http://noframes.linuxjournal.com/lj-issues/issue91/4769.html) I was impressed as I read the article by how easily I could envision Zope handling an application like this. I'm not a Java programmer, but the author's implementation seemed (while probably well thought out) so complicated compared to the ease with which the problem seems to map to Zope's natural strengths. I'm just starting some more graduate work myself, so I'm quite interested in finding a system to help me manage the volume of materials that I have to deal with in my courses. Perhaps I'll be sufficiently motivated to attempt a Zope solution to this problem. As always, I'd be interested to hear others' comments on the article and how Zope would fit into an alternative solution. Can not add product to product manager

A new list needed?

I think a lot of discussions on this list divide according to whether the participants are fundamentally programmers or not. It's not just the topics (whether a particular "how to" question is for programmers or not is not all that clear, and there are gradations), but the way people think and talk about the topics that distinguish programmers from non-programmers. Even the kinds of answers they want. There'd be nothing stopping people from subscribing to both, but some people would want only one and searching would be more productive if restricted to one. By the way, I am planning to pay back all the programming help I've gotten from this list over the past few months by writing an example and document that attempts to capture many programming moves in Zope, especially the "how do you call an X from a Y" and "how do you access A from a Z" kinds of questions. I plan to make it a simplified & sanitized version of the site I built. Look for it late November. Problem with Zope Book example

Hi, I'm working my way through the Zope Book (using Zope 2.4.1 on Win2000), and have run into a problem in the "Using External Methods" section (p. 155). It describes an Extensions directory in the top-level Zope directory, which wasn't there in my installation. So I added it, added the Example.py file as directed, and followed the instructions to create an External method (id=hello, Module Name=Example, Function Name=hello). This gave me the message: The specified module, Example, couldn't be found. I tried it again with a blank __init__.py file in the directory. I also tried restarting Zope. Nothing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Michael

I would definitely NOT suggest one single Zope if it doesn't fit your use cases, and you would prefer to have multiple object databases. However, keep in mind that a single ZEO storage server process can serve up many storages (though this is not super ideal on a multi-CPU system, see below)... Another, equally valid way of segmenting things, is to externally mount ODBs to your top-level folders, so that realestate resides in a different folder (and ODB) than your main site, and use Virtual Hosts and your front end to serve several virtual Zope hosts using their own odb, but using one Zope; the disadvantage to this is it won't scale as well on a dual-CPU ZEO client node... Keep in mind that one way of planning is to accept that Zope Servers and the ZSS cannot really scale past one CPU... So you may benefit from several Zopes on one box, accessing a backend ZEO storage Server (or multiple storage servers, if you have several CPUs and fast storage, and already segment things). In this case, a bit of segmentation might actually buy you some performance.
