Newbie Design Issue

I've just got involved with Zope, but I'm fairly versued in traditional web development, and python. I'm currently working on an app that tracks seting up computers based on a "check list" type deal, and who was responsible for it. If this were just a static "check list" of things that had to be done, this would be easy, but it needs the facilities to allow users to make new check lists, edit them, and destroy them. Since I'm not an old pro at Zope, I figured that I would just use some ZClasses to represent these things. My question is, what would be the easiest (as far as time, and need of indepth knowledge of Zope) way to do this? The ideas I have are...to let users enter in Check List items and then dynamically generate Zope Objects that represent each check list...Or another way would be to have Zope objects for all the check list items, and the check lists, and then more objects for the actual data stored in the check lists (Like who installed this piece of software, and what is the Computer's Service and Serial numbers.) As I said, the main purpose of this post is to get design ideas. Origionally, I had set this up in a RDBMS but that would cause too much overhead. how to import lots of files?

Consider posting this question to the zope-xml list, and you might get some more responses and ideas. I'm not familiar with XBEL, but this should be reasonable to do with not a lot of work. You would want to use ParsedXML, which supports standard DOM calls, like: dom = context['MyXMLDocumentId'] items = dom.getElementsByTagName('bookmark') for bookmarknode in items: text = '' for childnode in bookmarknode.childNodes: if childnode.nodeType == 3: #if nodetype is text, append to text text = text+childnode.nodeValue context.doSomethingWith(text) #where doSomethingWith is a method in the #acquisition path of this script's context For a simple XML schema, simple DOM traversals of your bookmarks should be able to read them in using ParsedXML, which will store a document; you could use the upload functionality of ParsedXML to upload someone's bookmarks, and use TTW python scripts to read each entry, and another ttw python script or dtml method to loop through all of them... It should be reasonable to do this... Publishing bookmarks with XBEL from Zope

Hi everyone, I'd like to build a system whereby our library staff could publish some browser bookmarks on their Web page. They maintain a rather lengthly list of them now, suggested by various teachers working on projects with their students. There are several Zope products designed to manage bookmarks, but none of them really seem to do what I want. I was wondering about a system that would take bookmarks in the XBEL XML format and present them from Zope using one of the Zope XML products. Is this a reasonable thing to do? I haven't messed with XML content in Zope yet and I'm not really sure where to start. Problem of accessing nested ZClass by FTP

Hi, I have a ZClass-based product, say ZClassTest. There is a ZClass named "ZClass1" in that product folder. There is another ZClass named "ZClass2" within the ZClass1. i.e. ZClass2 is a method of ZClass1. The problem is that I can access the content of ZClass2 by WebDAV. But failed to access the same content by FTP. The error message says that there is not such file or directory. that is : ftp://host/Control_Panel/Products/ZClassTest/ZClass1/propertysheets/methods/ZClass2 is fine.( return a list with "propertyshees/methods") but ftp://host/Control_Panel/Products/ZClassTest/ZClass1/propertysheets/methods/ZClass2/propertysheets/methods is broken. ( error 505) I noticed that actually the zope responses an extra space behind "ZClass2", that is ftp://host/Control_Panel/Products/ZClassTest/ZClass1/propertysheets/methods/ZClass2 /propertysheets/methods I hacked the zope code () and strip that extra space off. General question about ZClasses

OK, folks, as I wrote some minutes ago, I'm about of building my own management screens for some ZClasses. What I actually want to do is: I want to emulate some kind of book. The chapters are folders, each chapter consists of several paragraphs, each a DTML document, which are puzzled together on demand. I have written an edit method for the chapter, from which you can edit each single paragraph by using the standard manage_main of the DTML document. What I want to do is to enable users to manage each chapter, i. e. copy, paste, rename, add, ... But users should not be allowed to manage the DTML documents directly. I didn't find a possibility to blind out the DTML documents from the standard folder management screen. Restricting permissions to forbid editing and managing DTML documents failed, because I want to edit and manage them from my own editing method, which only redirects to the correct document management screen provided by Zope. Thus also proxy roles don't work That's why I started to write my own management screen on which you can only manage folders which actually are the chapters. Perhaps this is the completely wrong way of doing things. So, can somebody direct me to the right path? Otherwise, I have the following problem: Of course, I also want to add new folders / chapters. But I don't want to hard code the URL to the corresponding factory. Can I somehow find out the URL of that factory dynamically? I want this because I'm afraid that when I want to rename my product, or use that ZClass in another product again, or even distribute the product, the paths with static URLs are broken. Any hints? P.S.: Sorry for that long posting... P.P.S.: I'm still looking for an extensive Zope object reference which is better / more documented (examples?) than ZQR and API Reference. Also a good book would be fine. In the Zserver/FTPServer.py in "def listdir_completion" if long: for id, stat_info in file_infos: dir_list=dir_list+filesys.unix_longify(id,stat_info)+'\r\n' In case when the stat_info[4] (file owner) is "System Processes", the returned list of unix_longify will got extra-column which causes the ftp client to misunderstand the actually filename. a very quick-and-dirty work around is as follows: if long: for id, stat_info in file_infos: stat_info=list(stat_info) stat_info[4]=string.replace(stat_info[4],' ','_') dir_list=dir_list+filesys.unix_longify(id,stat_info)+'\r\n' hopes the development team will work on this. In the Tutorial,Under "Coding Logic with Scripts: I have successfully created the example for calculating compound interest. When I submit the form with a value of amount = 1000, rate = 6, periods = 12, years = 10, I get this error. Error Type: NameError Error Value: global name 'calculateCompoundingInterest' is not defined Being new I am not sure what is wrong. I am continuing on, but would like to get this to work. Raymond
