XML Doc and speed

I've been playing around with the XML Document Product again and I've run into a limitation that I have run into before: large XML documents process slowly. Getting data out of an XML Document is much slower than fetching data from an external relational DB. The trouble is that I have a large number of records that are hierarchically structured. Getting the data into XML is a lot easier than using SQL where the structure of each record demands that each record get spread out over a dozen or so tables. I'm doing this in one large XML file with the children of the root element each representing a record. Would I gain any speed by giving each record a separate XML Document? Thanks, Chris

Zope and J2EE

I have been reading about Jython and would like to know if anyone is considering porting Zope to J2EE as Jython would seem to allow this through compiling Python source down to Java beans,servlets and such. Anyone know what the technical issues are? What are people's thoughts about this idea? Background, my company is making a big J2EE push but we are also in desperate need of a good content management system. Zope seems the perfect thing but I am being told off because "it's not Java". - Greg

ZCatalog

Hi there- The problem is this! When I want to remove an object from the catalog by doing: 1.dic._delObject(o_id, '') 2.Products.ZCatalog.ZCatalog.ZCatalog.uncatalog_object(self.catalogo, o_id) I romove it from the Zope and the catalog but it continues appearing in my searches. I have to manually go to the catalog and do Advanced->Update Catalog. Is there any other way of doind this automatically in python? Thanks in advance. Simple ZCatalog question

OK, I searched through how-tos and any other documentation I could find, but I couldn't come up with an answer to this simple question, so I'm afraid I have to turn to the list. I'm trying to query a ZCatalog for objects where a particular property (which I'm cataloging as a FieldIndex) is not empty. I can't figure out for the life of me what the syntax to do this is :-) thanks in advance, -- Tim Moore

Your ODBC is set up to use the new user you created? All Zope access to SQL will flow through the ODBC connection. your connect string should be ODBC_DSN username password What account Zope service runs under is irrelevant in this context as long as that user can utilize ODBC and is using the SQL driver and security. I haven't done alot with intergrated security models under SQL (using NT account security). If the SQL Server is using integrated security model AND if Zope is running on the desktop under Win98, it is running under the account used to login to Windows. In this case, you must logon to Windows 98 using the NT account that has been given the authority on SQL or you will not have ODBC access to SQL. Since you can browse the tables, this is working. Look at permissions asssigned to the DTML document (make sure it's a dtml doc). Should have Use database Methods, Access Contents, View at least. If the user authenicated to Zope or Anonymous? Are you able to call the SQL Method directly (outside the management interface)? "http://123.45.67.89/sql_method" Your HTML tested fine here. Hi All! My little zope project is almost a year old. And Even though the main page (www.starrave.org) is down, there are still sites in operation. See www.trustcrew.org for a site that is in active use. This product automates many functions of websites for local rave scenes, and rave production companies. This release fixes some problems with newer zopes, and works with the new 2.3 The main problem I'm having is getting the catalog to work right... I strayed from the path of the new Squishdot catalog, because I couldn't get that format to work properly... but now it is all messed up. If anyone could take a quick look that would be great! The term "database" is used in a very wide sense in Zope's context. You surely have heard of the ZODB (Z Object Database). It is where Zope stores its objects. It is an embedded part of Zope. The CoreSession product currently supports two SessionDataManager types, a RAM session data manager that keeps the session information in RAM (i.e. no database) and an external SessionDataManager that stores the session information in ZODB. If you like (but I assume you do not), you could implement the SessionDataManager interface in your own class and then use an external database (or a file, or ...) to store your session data. Usually ZODB, itself an interface and not an implementation, is implemented by "FileStorage". This is an undoable storage that uses a file to store objects. Whenever you modify an object, a new object version is created and stored. This way, you can undo changes (as old versions are still there), but any small change increases the amount of storage necessary (for the new object version). Thus, the standard ZODB implementation is not very good to store the volatile session information. There are non-undoable ZODB implementation (not yet complete) that do not exhibit this problem. But probably, you will not go this way. You will either stick to a RAM based SessionDataManager or (if your load is expected to be low enough that you remain on a single computer) use a different session product. I, e.g., use FSSession, a file based session manager, and I am very satisfied. Such a file based solution will not scale well when the site needs to be spread over different computers. Dieter

People have reported problems with the doing that, and we haven't been able to give it a good look yet. If anyone has gotten PyExpat to compile, we could have a win32 binary release. The version that we're using is just a CVS checkout; eventually we hope to use the release. We don't plan on abandoning windows, but without a windows PyExpat our plan is to look at windows after we've released the unix version. -- Karl Anderson karl(a)digicool.com
