As a former VCL and OWL programmer, I have a bit of an affinity towards that way of doing things; the catch is of course, given I mainly do server-side development now (and frankly, it makes no sense to do non-client development in non-open tools, for the most part), I don't have the interest, or the money to keep paying Borland for upgrades every time the release a new version of Kylix/Delphi/Whatever; I stopped playing that game at about BCPP 3 after going from TP1.5->Delphi2->BCPP 3. I could only afford the decent versions of those tools when I was a student and had access to academic pricing at the campus bookstore, and now that I don't I do work in free tools, and get more satisfaction out of it. Kylix still has too high of a barrier to entry for most developers to even be considered for any open-source development. wxPython has definitely rekindled my interest in doing some desktop development, with the idea that Zope would provide a good middleware suite / backend for those kind of apps. I can't wait to see what the Boa-Constructor people have been doing... Do you think Delphi/Kylix is considerable? At the moment, I'm considering this for a GUI for FreePM. I had some very good experience with PythonForDelphi, it integrates very well with Python. You have both worlds: Python's scripting power, and Delphi with its IDE. Newbie question: dtml or python comand requested

hi all, i hope this isn't too trivial. :) i recently constructed a navigation bar with zope. now i would like to include a functionality to switch languages. when clicking on a "spanish" button, the folder ids that are displayed shall be replaced by the values of a spanish attribute - the corresponding spanish description for the link. depending on whether spanish content exists for this link either a spanish or english default document shall be displayed in the right part of the window. for carrying out this if-query i need to look dynamically - always when the button is clicked - into the folder level, one level below the context and search the "spanish_default". so, please, what is the command (dtml or python) for "starting a search" for a document that is situated in a folder (which is not known by name, because it changes) one level below the current context folder. (like <dtml-if ../spanish_default> do... ). thanx, fernando

Actually, I was referring to non-routed VLANs, on the same switch(es), setup so that each ZEO Client has another NIC just to access that VLAN, which has no other traffic. I am currently setting up something like this, but I have the luxury of a dedicated NIC for this purpose (well, almost, I have udp heartbeats on this as well). I am trying to keep the ZEO server as isolated as possible from other networks. Forgive me if this is a dumb questions, but is there a way to bind the ZSS process to serve certain particular interfaces only? Vlans do not add considerable security. Since often the setup includes a firewall, one cant use them anyway in these cases. I think to solve the problem for arbitrary clients accessing ZODB we need an additionally layer on top of the application logic which can then be accessed via net using authorisation and such. We need this layer anyway for better application abstraction. But I fear this goes out of the scope of this thread. Money format

Zope folder property manipulation problem

Hi guys I am struggling with a small part. I passed the following parameter to this python script - fname, newvar, newval, newtype I am trying to change the current variable say memberid which is passed within newvar with a newvalue say 100 which is passed in newval. But its not getting changed. The line indicated below has no effect ------------------------------------ if container.hasProp(fname, newvar): container[fname].manage_changeProperties(newvar = newval) (this line is suppossed to make the change - but no effect) print fname + '-0' else: try: container[fname].manage_addProperty(newvar, newval, newtype) print 1 except: print 0 return printed ----------------------------------- how do i make python understand that i want the value with the newvar to be used and to be set with the value within newval ??? please advice me. thanks bobby

Hello, i've got this problem with the date-value 2039/01/05. Nearby this value it seems to be a python-time-limit! Is this changed with 2.0 and when not what can you do?? Tell your customer not to think about the future ;-) Bye and thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. However, I've got just that already sitting here on my desk -- as I said, I've read the documentation available. I'm looking for something *more* than that explanation, which doesn't really seem to make clear the pros and cons of using the various types. Index types, property types

I've read the documentation about various index types (Text, Field, Keyword) as well as the information about property types. However, I'm having problems understanding how to decide which to use for different situations. For instance, I originally made document keywords a property "keywords" of the type "tokens", but it seems like tokens are case sensitive, and I'd be better off using just "string" -- or maybe it's that having the keyword property be indexed as KeywordIndex is a bad choice? Could someone compare and contrast these things a bit more for me? Hey folks, Just a little note to announce the availability of http://www.zopelabs.com. A community driven site that houses a Zope "cookbook". Code snippets that you find useful for doing the mundane, or more in-depth "black magic voodoo". The general goal is to provide a "learn by example" environment, and cut-and-paste type code sharing. Hopefully, with this type of environment it will make the migration from PHP/ASP to Zope a much more pleasurable experience. Along with opening the site up to the community, the source to the product that drives most of the functionality of the site is available for download.
