Site Error Question

I got the site error that is attached to this message. The curious thing is that the error message indicated that the parameter "status" was not in the request and thus the request was bad. Well, there is no "status" parameter in the ZClass definition. Nor is it in the add form, or in the index_html file used to display the result. The word status just doesn't come up with this class. object instances as meta_data in ZCatalogs?

ZCatalog searches return "pluggable brain" instances rather than the catalogued object. You've got quick access to the catalogued meta_data, but if you want more then you've got to "wake up" the actual object - and there's a significant performance hit for doing so. Consider the following pared-down scenario: You set up a beautiful ZClass called Point. Point has two float properties, x and y. Point has a method "distance_to(test_point)" which returns the cartesian distance from itself to another Point instance (test_point). Now you catalog all your Point instances and conduct a search which returns a list of pluggable brains. You want to quickly find the distance from a given test point to each of the points returned by the search: 1) You wake up each object and call "distance_to(test_point)" for each. Clean but performance hit for waking up. 2) You add x and y as meta_data, rewrite the method distance_to(test_point) as distance_to(x,y). Now you no longer have to wake up each point as the x and y are quickly available in the pluggable brain. It's quicker but less object-oriented. Starts to look a little like old C code - distance_to(x1,y1,x2,y2). Further, it becomes a real mess when your "distance_to" calculation uses many properties in addition to x and y. Is there an alternative that I'm missing? Ideally you'd like to have object instances as meta_data in the catalog. Comments? Hi, just started using Zope and I am really impressed. But after the docs and tuts I am not sure how I can use it for my problem. I have to build a little app, in which PDFs can be uploaded. For eacht PDF there is some extra info that has to be stored, too. I also need a userlist and once a week an email has to be sent to the list members announcing all new documents. The users should be able to search in the document store using the extra info stored before. So what I need is a little, customized Zope, but without all that extra stuff. Is it possible to create such an app with Zope. Is there a way to edit the stored info in the DB afterwards without writing my own forms. TIA Frank

putting ZClass selection property choices on a separate propertysheet

Hi: Like I said, I am really getting in to ZClasses. I think it would be better to put the choices for a ZClass selection property on a separate propertysheet. That way I can leave those tokens or lines properties out of the management interface to make it look cleaner. I don't see any way to associate a selection property with a property on another sheet. Is there a way to do this? ZSQL method and database connection acquisition.

Hi context: Zope 2.3.2 (source release, python 1.5.2, linux2) Python 1.5.2 (#1, Feb 1 2000, 16:32:16) [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs- Platform linux-i386 ZMySQLDA 2.0.0 Making zope acquire the database connection appears to be slightly cumbersome. I have a folder X with many ZSQLMethods inside it. To add these I had to add a connection object to folder X before hand. However I have other folders say test1 and test2 in which I place a database connection with the same id but connecting to different databases. I am have the same schema in two databases, so I want to group the sql all together and then use the differing connections in different folders to manipulate the data differently. so we have (as a minimum) /X containing dbconn ; a 'fake' database connection a_sql_method ; uses dbconn /test1 dbconn ; a database connection to database1 /test2 dbconn ; a database connection to database2 Now once this is all set up you have to delete the /X/dbconn. (If you rename it though, the connection_id in the sql_method changes as well, which makes the calls from the test1/2 folders break). So delete it you must. and then using the magic of acquistion call /X/test1/a_sql_method and this queries on database1 and /X/test2/a_sql_method and this queries database2 However if you want to add any more sql methods into the X folder or modify an existing one, zope requires that there be an existing database connection in that folder. This seems to go against the spirit of acquistion. If the connection is not visible in that folder the only thing that shouldnt work is the 'test' tab. The SQL method and the database connection seem too tightly coupled to me. any ideas? any fixes? I'll try on 2.4.x the minute I get the mysql-python and python 2.1 built. Jon

Trouble uploading with Netscape Composer

I'm trying to upload images to a ZClass that has inherited from ZObjectManager. I created a PUT_factory that assigns images to the ExtImage product. Why not just hack it to call convert from the command line? Used to do this all the time using IM on Win32... I have not used this restrictedTraverse before, but I am trying it in other areas now. Once I get an object (a DTML Method) how do I make it render normally? Subtle Authentication Problem with pages with Query Strings

We have run into subtle authentication problem and wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Part of our site is public, but most is private. Here is a simplified schematic: Root |-Folder1 |-Folder1a |-Folder1b |-Shared Everything below Folder 1 is restricted and *should* prompt for name and password if requested. What we have seen is the following. 1. User requests /Folder1 and is prompted for authorization.User enters and page displays. 2. index_html in Folder1 does a redirect to /Folder1/Folder1a (index_html) 3. They then click on a link on that page to take them to a index_html in Folder1b. The exact URL looks something like this: /Folder1/Folder1b/index_html?method=Search 4. User get's a keyerror on Shared (accessed with a dtml-with) What is so bizarre about this behavior is the fact that if they change the URL to remove the query string (/Folder1/Folder1b/index_html) the page is displayed as expected. Once the page is displayed, if they then click a link (or change the URL [to be]) identical to the link in step 3, the page displays correctly. I found through much experimentation that the issue appears to be with the first request of a page using a query string. It appears that if the page is first requested without a query string, the authentication somehow "sticks" and then any subsequent requests with a query string work for that user (though no authorization is rerequested from the user). It almost appears that in some instances, that the query string somehow derails the authentication dialog between zope and the browser. Another interesting tidbit: -Step 1 after authorization: AUTHORIZED_USER = username -Step 2 AUTHORIZED_USER = username -Step 3 AUTHORIZED_USER = Anonymous User (with query string) [Appears zope thinks we haven't logged in yet] -Remove Query String, AUTHORIZED_USER = username [Note, we didn't reauthenticate] -Add Query String again, AUTHORIZED_USER = username [Hmm, now it works] Security wise, the only thing I have locked down is the "Access contents information" on Folder 1 (and all children), requiring specific roles and disallowing anonymous access. I upgraded to 2.4.1 today, but still have this problem. This is reproducable in various versions of IE, but am using 6.0 on test machine. We are at this point in time using the default HTTP authentication. Fortunately in this instance I was able to fix the problem by changing the link to first request the page without a query string and then subsequent requests seem to always work. But, it would be interesting to know if there is something that I can do so that it will work regardless. Bookmarked URLs with query strings do not work in general unless authentication is done ahead of time, then the bookmark may or may not work. My hunch is that the best way to fix the problem will be to move to a cookie based sessioning tool. It appears to be a problem with the authentication headers being sent to zope. But wondered if anyone has had a similiar problem or has any suggestions. Thanks for your time, -Chris
