Hopefully you have wget, lynx, curl, or links... 4 different options for getting Zope via HTTP from the command line. If you are really desperate and don't have these, if you have Python on your box, you could always write a small script using urllib to grab the file? Nested hashes, ZopeDB bloat, and URL

Consider this, I have a single Family python product. Family objects contains a hash of subfamily objects. Subfamily objects contain a hash of proteins. Protein objects contain a hash of amino_acids. Amino_acid objects contain a hash of atoms. Since we are talking about a couple thousand proteins and a over a million atoms, I don't want to make anything under Family a proper zope object. I have seen ZopeDB bloat and its is not pretty. Yet because they are not proper objects, they can not be refered to on the URL or otherwise. ie http://whatever:8080/Family/Subfamily/Protein/Amino/Atom everything bounces back to the one true product Family Any clues: Session variables ? Operator overloading __call__, __getattr__? Aquistion ? Any help greatly appreciated Chris :)

I just tried ftp.zope.org <ftp://ftp.zope.org> , and received an unauthorized. Can you use a browser? If not, how about wget or curl? Those two programs can get files via HTTP from a command line. My site load is very low so I have little incentive to switch to ZEO other than the development advantages. But I'll look into this if I can't get the HTTP POST method working. New zope.org development

There have been complaints about zope.org. The complaints include things like "the design is ugly", "the navigation is difficult", "it's too slow", and "search results are not useful." For a long time there have been plans to convert the site to the current version of Zope using CMF, and various false starts have been made, but so far the site is still running software that's best described "FrakenZope 2.3"... I opened my big mouth, and now I'm responsible for fixing this. :-) Actually, a new plan was already in place, and all I have to do is coach its execution. Zope Corporation has retained a highly skilled Zope developer, Sidnei da Silva, to do the work. The advantage over Zope Corporation developers doing this (as has been tried in the past) is that Sidnei isn't likely to be pre-empted by higher-priority customer work: for him, this *is* customer work, the customer being Zope Corporation. At the same time, because Sidnei is being paid, the expectation is that the plan will be carried out at a steady pace, as opposed to simply "letting the community sort it out." Sidnei's plan includes the following pieces: - use Zope 2.6 with CMF 1.3 for the new site - use a new skin design, the winner of the zope.org contest - use the new ZCTextIndex search engine - migrate all existing users and as much content as practical to the new site (There's more, but we'd be getting into detail territory.) The project goals include minimizing the amount of new code and content to be created, in order to minimize the risks of failure. We also strive to make future maintenance of the site simpler, both at the sysadmin level (process and resource control) and at the webmaster level (content control). All these goals are designed to make sure that the site can be kept current once the upgrade is in place. Time-wise, Sidnei expects a preview version of the new site to go up as new.zope.org within a month, and the final version to go live (replacing the old www.zope.org) within 2-3 months after that. Sidnei expects to be asking community help with some tasks; he'll post about this himself. In addition, we're also hoping to hire Sidnei as part-time webmaster for zope.org, starting next week. Aside from the obvious differences (python versus java), Struts is a framework and tag library, whereas Zope is a programming framework, a fairly extensive class library, two different tag libraries (DTML and TAL/TALES), an application server, and a web server. With struts, you still have to add tomcat or WebLogic before you can develop or deploy. One thing that Zope and struts have in common is the concept of separating presentation from logic. In the days of DTML, Zope could not claim this, but with page templates Zope is actually better than struts in this regard. Struts uses a "Model Controller View" architecture. You could use a similar design in Zope. I try to do so when I develop in Zope by using page templates as the view, python scripts as the controller, and a files system product as the model containing the business logic. We recently deployed a very large-scale app on WebLogic using struts. My only complaint is that you end up creating a lot of forms and actions that seem redundant. I think Zope the application server could learn a lot from WebLogic (true clustering, failover, remote node management, remote application deployment, etc), but I don't know that Zope the development platform has that much to learn from struts.

2.6.0 errors

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Hi, I'm trying out Zope 2.6.0 on Solaris, using the binary distro. I've been using 2.5.1 successfully. I set up 2.6.0 to start as root, then switch to user 'zope'. I look in Products and see ZGadflyDA is installed, not broken. I followed the instructions: var owned by root, then chmod 1775 to set the sticky bit (chmod o+t didn't work in Solaris). Thus I wind up with var having permissions of drwxrwxr-t.
