Proposed installation changes for review

Hi folks, An effort to improve Zope 2 installation, startup, and configuration for Zope 2.7 has been ongoing for some time now (see http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Proposals/InstallationAndConfiguration) The effort has reached a point where we believe it is reasonable to merge its fruits to the Zope trunk. Before doing so, however, we want to gather input from people who care deeply about Zope configuration and installation; particularly those who have significant investments in the existing behaviors of Zope 2 configuration and installation. A bunch of stuff is changed (most notably Zope no longer uses environment variables as configuration, and instead defers to command-line arguments and config file values). What follows is a summary of changes, a walk-through of a Zope 2 installation under this regime, and a list of the configuration-file changeable parameters exposed by the current Zope configuration schema. Please provide your feedback before this Friday, March 14. If possible, check out and try the new software. If there are showstopper issues for a lot of people, we will consider not performing the merge directly after that date. Otherwise, the merge will be performed at any time after the 14th. Thanks! - C ----- Major changes in Zope 2.7 ========================= Zope 2.7 will contain a number of changes related to the build process and configuration. The scripts used to start Zope will also be substantially changed. The implementation of these changes is not yet complete, but a substantial portion has been done and is expected to be merged into the Zope 2 trunk in the near future. The exact schedule for merging these changes has not been determined; additional notice will be provided. These changes are substantially based on efforts by Chris McDonough on the "chrism-install-branch". Major changes ------------- The following are the most important and user-visible changes compared to Zope 2.6 and the current CVS HEAD: - Configuration is normally done by editing a config file instead of passing command line options. The configuration file is handled by the ZConfig package. - Environment variables are no longer used for configuration. - Building and installing the software have become more clearly distinct; the installation can be separate from the build. - Zope 2.7 uses the "instance home" model in the normal case: a script in the installed software is used to create new "instances" of Zope. Each instance is defined by a directory tree containing configuration, scripts, and data. (For convenience, the instance and the installation can be located in the same directory, and the build area may be used in lieu of an installation if desired.) - The z2.py, start, and stop scripts have been replaced by the runzope and zopectl scripts. - The runzope/zopectl scripts do not accept the same command-line arguments as z2.py used to accept. - The wo_pcgi.py script used to build Zope without PCGI support has been replaced by the common Unix build sequence of configure, make. - The pcgi/ directory and the w_pcgi.py script have been removed from the top of the source tree. The pcgi/ directory may be made available as a separate distribution. (The application server still has support to allow connections from a PCGI-capable Web server.) - The ZServer package has been moved from the top of the source tree into the lib/python/ directory. Getting the code today ---------------------- The implementation lives in the "new-install-branch", which is a "partial" branch rather than a complete branch: only the files and directories which need to be changed have been placed on the branch; all other files are used from the CVS HEAD. The current state of this code can be checked out from CVS using the command: cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@cvs.zope.org:/cvs-repository co \ -r new-install-branch -f Zope The installation instructions in doc/INSTALL.txt has been updated on the branch; that file provides detailed information on creating an installation and instance. (A copy has been attached for convenience.) A sample installation/startup runthrough --------------------------------------- The below is the output from a sample install session. During this session, we install the Zope software to /tmp/zopehome and install an instance home to /tmp/insthome. exUserFolder authentication problem -URGENT

Dear list, I've been using exUser Folder authentication for the web application developed using Zope. I'm using MySQL as backend. I've created users. I've deselected the Access contents information" and "View" in the Authenticated module and given permission to "Authenticated", "Owner", "Manager" roles only. Now If I visited to the Home page it is redirecting to the Login Page and after successful authentication Showing the Home page. Till now it is fine. If I click any of the link in the HOme page it is redirecting to the Login screen again. what might be the problem? Please help me out. I don't see that configuration gets any easier if you have multiple processes. Even if Zope had N processes, there would still be the same amount of stuff to configure. You'd probably still want a single master config file for the whole thing, and a tool to check the configuration is valid separate from the process that uses the file to configure itself. As I watched everyone working on the ZConfig project, I was impressed with how many issues are involved in getting a decent configuration system. I don't think that break the server into multiple pieces would make it easier to configure, and I don't see what requirements could have been eliminated to make the project take less work. Jeremy

you're right, i'm still thinking tabularly. I'm basically looking for ways how to do database query (select, update, create, etc). But I suspect the larger problem is that you're thinking tabularly. Trying to make a 1-to-1 translation between an object-storage scheme and a relational-storage scheme isn't always (or maybe usually) going to work. I know no magic processes for this, unfortunately. --jcc

You cannot have more than one in an installation. Dead impossible. Perhaps you can understand why it's confusing to say you want to add a "root folder". If what you're aiming for is a direct child of that root, a top-level folder, if you will, that's not so tough. E.g. say we have the following: / (the root) -- folder1 -- object1a -- folder2 -- folder2a -- folder2b -- folder3 -- object1 folder1, folder2, folder3, and object1 are all children of the root, or top-level objects. They are what you see when you look at http://localhost/manage . The rest are not. If what you want to do is be able to create some folder on the same level as folder1, and also have a method to do something to it, all you need is: Python Script folderCreate parameters: id, title here.manage_addFolder(id,title) # you can do whatever else you need to do here, # like restrict permissions return "Folder " + id + " created" # you can also return the rendering of some object or do a redirect here Put this in the highest level you're operating on (in this case the root), and you can call it to create your folder in whatever context you call it on. In an HTML form, an action of "/folderCreate" along with id and title parameters would create a folder with your id and title in the root. An action of /folder1/folderCreate would make the folder a child of folder1. The equivalents in Python Scripts would be root.folderCreate(id,title), and root.folder1.folderCreate(id,title). You can make a similar Python Script to manipulate security. You might change the permission for a certain role or add a local role or whatever it is you want to do. This could also be a Product: subclass Folder, override Folder's security with your settings, have the manage_add... set up whatever else you need, and add a method that changes that security. You could then call manage_add... directly or through the ZMI to make your new type of folder.

It's a great start. Thanks. I find it very helpful. I'm also very curious about performance on dynamic content. My experience has been, and I think I'm not alone in this, that even with my rarefied understanding of the capabilities of Zope, I find myself exploiting it's advantages. I don't think I have a single static page on my site. I think it's more to do with mindset. I just don't think in terms of "static" pages, I'm more concerned with the logic than the presentation. In fact some of my pages are extremely complex. Perhaps much more than they need to be, but I'm still learning. Another comment I need to make - this is through experience with my manager. On http://www.zope.org/Members/BwanaZulia/zope_benchmarks/benchmarks.html the key statement is "Tomcat is 2x or 3x faster than Zope when execute an SQL query", the key words being "SQL query". Not pages. Even I missed that first. I'm stating the obvious here, but sometimes even the obvious needs to be restated. And a suggestion - I'd be very interested to know if the above was (still) true for DB access. One piece of logic we frequently use here is to generate a form with default values that are dynamically extracted from a database. Explanation - we have some very lengthy forms. Since we don't expect users to complete them in one go, we give them the option of storing whatever they enter in a session in the DB. And each time the user wishes to update the information, the input form is dynamically generated with SQL query variables (I'm still using <dtml-sqlvars ...> which is slower than the alternatives, but like I said earlier, I'm still learning) being used as default values. Best way to run multiple sites in one Server

Well, it's a sys admin newbie question ;) I have just been handed over a server with some sites in it (not many :) ). I wonder what is the best way to run multiple sites on one computer? I heard some ways: multiple zope server running in simultaneously, using virtual monster, using PCGI, using Fast CGI. What are pros and cons for each way? What is the best way to run multiple zope sites in one computer? Are there any reading materials I can read about this matter?
