Hello ! I have been created a Zope (Python) Product. But it is must store inner global definitions (some conversion parameters), what I need to change in only one thread, or only once. See below. So: because the Zope is threaded application, the threads are use this product. Possible in same time. Question: the python variable setting/checking is thread-safe ? In Delphi, or C, with threaded application I must acquire/release a lock, when I check/set/read any variable (except integer), like this (pseudo): lock=Lock func ReadVar():string; lock.Enter; try Result:=GlobalVar; finally lock.Leave; end; proc WriteVar(val:string); lock.Enter; try GlobalVar:=val; finally lock.Leave; end; This way is make the variable using thread-safe, because avoid to thread A read while thread B is write (and subsections of the information are confusing by another thread). The Fmts is a list. I want to set the parameters of Product in only once, but because the Zope is threaded app, I must thinking in thread-safe programming methods. Question1: The code above is thread safe ? (I think, it is not) Question2: If it is not thread safe, how to set this variable without global lock/mutex object ? Question3: Or how to I set this object's parameters as property, in Designer interface of Zope ? Please help me, if possible ! zope 2.6.4 lockups

Hello all, Zope 2.6.4 has got stuck several times on my server. I have Debian sarge with the zope 2.6.4-1 package and python 2.2.3-7 (I know Zope 2.6 should use python2.1, but the debian package uses 2.2). I don't use ZEO. The problems started recently but I cannot pin down any specific event that triggered it. It may be related to upgrading zope from 2.6.2, or a Plone upgrade (I now have 2.0RC6, used to have RC3), or a kernel upgrade. The machine is a 2-processor Xeon currently running a SMP kernel (kernel-image-2.4.25-1-686-smp). Zope runs with the default 4 threads. Zope is running behind Apache. The symptom is that zope stops responding to requests, so the requests just hang until timeout. The processes are running, but a kill -TERM won't kill them. kill -9 helps. I haven't yet been able to repeat this in debug mode because the event is fairly rare. Also I haven't debugged the locked up processes with gdb, but will do so the next time it happens following instructions I've seen on this list. However, if you have any advice on how to further investigate this problem, I'd love to hear it. Below are some excerpts from Z2-detailed.log that show the sequence of events leading to lockup. It seems that two requests come in at the same time, and a crash happens in the middle of processing. Problem with VirtualHostMonster

Hi, I was using Zope "SiteRoot" product until now (without any problem) to handle my Zope virtual hosting behind an Apache server with rewrite rules. I've tried recently to use VirtualHostMonster product, but had to face a little problem : - if I load an object and call his "absolute_url()" method, everything is OK - if I load an object, store it in a REQUEST variable or on the stack with "<dtml-with>" or "<dtml-let>", and call "absolute_url()" on this object, the URL is not rewritten. Is there any way to handle this problem ?? Thanks, Thierry

Security issue FIXED by installing VerboseSecurity?

I am trying to move my application from Zope 2.5 to Zope 2.7. There was the security audit, so problems are expected to crop up. But I stumpled across something unexplicable... Pretty innocent Python Script gives error "ValueError: unpack list of wrong size". To investigate the error, I installed VerboseSecurity. The error dissappeared. I removed VerboseSecurity. Error appeared. I installed VerboseSecurity again. Error disappeared. How is this possible? I did not even set ZOPE_SECURITY_POLICY=PYTHON, because I was not sure if Zope 2.7 reads environment variables. Yet VerboseSecurity "fixed" the error. I don't like this kind of fix... especially since I do not understant it. Here's the script in question: Dct={} Dct['readers'] = context.readers+1 context.propertysheets.data.manage_changeProperties(Dct) It's the third line that caused the error. This script runs "proxy Manager" because it updates a property even if the user is not the owner of the ZClass instance that this script belongs to. Chris, I'm perfectly happy to toss the whole dtml mess overboard because it's so awkward. The only reason I went toward using this ridiculous querystring is that a test case worked with literals and '.' instead of '/'. I'd much rather pass tree-item-url, which has the slashes in the first place. I appreciate the ZPT solution but the whole idea is to have a single method at the top of the tree and manage the objects down in the leaves from there. I have about 20 folders two levels down the tree and I'm sure the customer will want subfolders below that eventually. Meanwhile, have a little patience with us newbies--you can't memorize the manual in a day. And the manual could certainly use some improvement, to wit, if dtml is frowned upon, put ZPT first and clearly mention that it is the preferred approach and should be learned first. Even my Python guru down the hall finds some parts of Zope less than transparent. You shouldn't have to read source code in the .py files to get things done.
