Packing data.fs programmatically

I am using the following module to pack my data.fs programmatically before a backup is made. This was largely taken out of the Zopelabs cookbook - thanks! ------------------------ def packZODB(): try: import os, sys os.chdir("/path/to/Zope/python") sys.path+=['/path/to/Zope/python/was/required/to/load/Zope/module'] import Zope Zope.configure("/path/to/zope.conf") app = Zope.app() app.Control_Panel.Database.manage_pack(days=0) get_transaction().commit() app._p_jar.close() return 1 except Exception, inst: for arg in inst.args: print "Oh dear! %s" % arg -------------------------- Now for the wierd bit. I successfully ran the code that went into this module line-by-line in the Python interpreter. The data.fs was beautifully packed. However, when I run this script from the command line (through another script that acts as a hook) the line "app = Zope.app()" fails with the error "No such file or directory". Now I am confused, coz the code lines that you would expect to fail if either of the required paths were not correct ran quite happily. I am running Python 2.3.5 and Zope 2.7. hi to all. I wanted to install zope on my debian system but I noticed there is a /usr/lib/zope directory. so I concluded zope has already been installed with my debian system. so what to do now? Zope/Plone logon security strategy etc

Just a quick question about Zope/Plone logins and security etc. When I go to www.domain.com:8080/manage I get a login box which seems to function in exactly the same way as the www.domain.com:8080/login_form page. My question is, what was the rational for implementing this logon strategy in Zope as it obviously acts as authentication and authorisation but falls down on confidentiality and data integrity? Also would there be any plans at all in the future to make this logon process authenticate, be confidential and have integrity? I know that you can do it in Apache etc but for most people that's probably quite a big step. Most people probably reckon that the appearance of the logon box makes their site secure. I'm only talking about the logon areas here, etc. Thanks Michael

Applying updates to zope site

I am involved in maintaining a remote Zope site that is behind a firewall where I have no remote access. I have a (parallel) site that I use to test changes and upgrades that is accessible to me. I am a looking for a straightforward way to package tested changes, send and have changes applied at the other end -- without my physical presence (there is a systems maintenance person a the other with reasonable broad systems knowledge but no in depth Zope experience). The changes in this case consist of changes to or new python scripts, dhtml methods and documents, or images spread throughout a hierarchy of folders on the site. The only thing I can come up with so far is a (probably fairly painful and error prone) set of instructions for updating files one by one. Anybody have any other ideas?

Setting up Zope in a development/production environment

Hi: The way our current website works is via changes made in a sandbox area and then using CVS moved to a staging area (same server as sandbox). After approval of changes visible in the staging area, the changes are then, using CVS, moved to the production server (different from staging server) where they're visible on the public website. Now Zope/Plone use the various permission controls to mimic the above but I would like to find out how to create the above design/staging/production environment using Zope/Plone. Thanks. Q

Product refreshing in Zope 2.9

It appears that product refreshing is futile in Zope 2.9 which is according to zope.org the current stable version :( Think again. According to: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.web.zope.z3base.five/977 Philipp von Weitershausen informs us that if you have a product that uses Five in zope2 and you try to refresh the product it simply won't work. Your only hope is to write tests which I'm not interested in. I only write unit tests from non-trivial things that requires thinking. If I decide to include one more template or a new non-trivial function I don't want to have to restart Zope. But, in that example they are using Five and I'm not. I've just got a Zope 2.9 install and a python product that I started on before Five even existed. Does that give us any hope for non-Five python products? Anybody? I've tried pressing the little "Refresh" button in Control_Panel and sure enough, the product is reloaded (I put some print statements in the .py file) but not refreshed. dealing with scripts that take too long

Hi there, we're experiencing problems with certain maintenance scripts, which just take too long to complete, so that the browser resets the connection and Zope aborts the transaction. Short of splitting the scripts up into smaller pieces and running them individually (which would be a pain), what can we do? I was thinking we could send data back to the browser, but I cannot figure out a way to do this from a TTW Python script. How can I send data immediately, not only when I 'return printed' after all the processing is done. NPH or so, I believe this was called with plain CGIs. empty session with virtual hosting

I have a Zope 2.9.0 installation under Solaris. When I access the Zope site directly (port 8080) the session has the keys I expect, but when I try to do the same using the virtual host (port 80 has apache that rewrites to the zope installation) the session is empty. Do you have any hint about this behaviour ? thank you in advance! Luca
