Zope Zeo Performance

Hello. I've thumbed through the list for Zope Zeo performance issues similar to mine - but have found a lot of conflicting information - so I thought I'd ask (and keep reading and experimenting). Zope - 2.7.x (Zeo) Apache 2.x Zope is using Plone (2.0.x) Basically I have a high traffic (high performance) Apache -> Zeo -> Zope(ZODB) setup. 10 Apache/Zeo boxes - and one big old Zope/ZODB box. The equipment is high end DELLs (well as of 3 years ago) - all running FreeBSD (we tried Red Hat but it blows up - but thats another post). Anywho - if your still reading thanks. We know Plone and code is a major issue - and we are working on a migration plan to 3. But it the meantime ... The traffic is heavy write traffic (I read some of Dieters posts and am testing that out as well). Once overall load hits about 100 people or so the Zeo's start dying - heavy load, slow response, python takes all CPU/Memory. Then when traffic is removed from the ZEO instance ... the system remains CPU bound by the python process ... and you have to bounce Zope(Zeo instance) and Apache to free it. The ZODB reports heavy Clients waiting ... but doesn't budge on load. So ... anyone have any suggestions. I can throw 10 more Apache/Zeo instances as it - but not sure if that's the right approach. So I guess here's my questions. 1. Is there a Zeo Client limit you can have when connecting to a Zope(Zeo Server) instance? 2. Are there any special setting to allow for 'many' Zeo clients connecting to Zeo server? 3. Are there any 'tweak' on the Zeo Client side or the Zeo Server side that I should consider? I've reviewed quite a bit on confirguration ... but nothing seems to really make a difference. 4. Anyone have any special 'high performance' tricks / tips they can point me to? I'll continue to read and research ... but any information would be helpful. Thanks -FuBuJo

RedHat blows up? (another post follow up)

Concerning the post from FuBuJo <siteartisan(a)gmail.com> about Zope Zeo with reference to RedHat blowing up with Zope. I've been running Zope on RedHat and RedHat based OSs since 1999, always on Dells, and only found an issue with RedHat 8.0 when it came out (before RHEL existed) and the issue was due to the change in threading on the RedHat distro bu there was a fix for Zope in Zope's configuration. After RedHat 7.3 I started using Fedora until last year when false CPU hardware errors kept crashing the server. Had to move to CentOS (RedHat based) because at that time Dell only supported RedHat, CentOS and Suse. No errors after installing CentOS using Apache, Zeo, and Zope. Now I am making arrangements to move back to RedHat with RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.0 and I am curious/concerned to what issues you experienced with RedHat. How to make a trigger handler on moved object

Hello, I want to make method that as a handler when some content is moved to a new location. I want to capture another event, like deleted content, access and modify the content's title, etc. Inside the handler method/function/procedure, it will create a connection to another host. Anybody know how to make this happen? Any sample or tutorial will be great. Once more, I'm using Plone 2.5.2. Thank you. Regards, -jay-

zope starts in foreground but not normaly

Centralized sessions with ZEO

I apologize if this has been asked ad nauseam. I've uncovered enough information online to suggest that it has, but too little to get any kind of definitive answer. My problem is that I am running a number of zope instances against a zeo instance. I would like to store the session data in the ZEO instance so that the session data is shared between the different zope instances. The question is how best to do it. What I've settled on is the approach given at http://www.zopelabs.com/cookbook/1061234337. This appears to work fine, however I don't really like the idea of using an undoable store and having to constantly pack it. I definitely don't need persistent data (if the sessions go away when I restart ZEO so be it). I tried the same approach using a tempstorage instead of filestorage. This works up until ZEO is stopped and started, at which point the transient object container in the temporary storage disappears (which makes sense, but is a little inconvenient). I also tried the approach at http://longsleep.org/1/howto/sharesessionwithzeo. This is absolutely perfect for what I want to do save for the fact that it doesn't work. No matter what I tried with it, the sessions don't get shared. In fact, it doesn't look like the database on ZEO get recognized at all. When I go to add a mount point it tells me that there is something in the way of /temp_folder (presumably the autocreated temporary folder object for the default sessions). What I find particularly odd is that this appears to be the case for anything configured to mount at /temp_folder - including the temporary storage configured as part of the default zope.conf file. Changing that part of the default config or removing it entirely doesn't appear to have any impact on how zope runs. I feel like I'm missing something. It seems like configuring the sessions to use tempstorage on the ZEO instance shouldn't be this hard. I'm also confused by the seemingly spurious block in the zope.conf: <zodb_db temporary> # Temporary storage database (for sessions) <temporarystorage> name temporary storage for sessioning </temporarystorage> mount-point /temp_folder container-class Products.TemporaryFolder.TemporaryContainer </zodb_db> I haven't been able to find much documentation on what the various options for this block mean (particularly the container-class) member. I should probably mention that I am running 2.8.7, which I realize is more than a little out of date at this point. I'm hoping that somebody can fill me in a little or point me to some documentation I may have missed. Thanks in advance Kevin

catching exceptions in zpt

I'm trying to do something like this in a zpt <meta tal:define="global target python:here.mysript(request.target) | nothing" /> however, if my request did not have ?target=blah I get an attributeError because of course the request has not parameter called target. I assumed that the pipe 'or nothing' would handle an equivalent except AttributeError block but it doesnt. how can I put in my zpt a way to catch if request has no attribute? -- David Bear College of Public Programs/ASU 411 N Central, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Index Problem - Index randomly breaks/changes

Posted this to the Plone Mailing-list, but this is more of a problem I am having with Zope. There will be additional information here - http://www.nabble.com/Indexing-Bug---Index-changes-and-is-not-always-correc… Basically the problem I am having is that I create an index, but sometimes this index changes and is incorrect. To test this I would constantly click the 'Clear and Rebuild' button under the Advanced Tab. Then I would browse my index under the Indexes tab. After repeating this many many times, I would get 2 different results for my index (1 correct, the other completely wrong). I didn't change anything else, I just kept clicking rebuild. I noticed something interesting in my debugging window. All rebuilds that resulted in a correct index had this - DEBUG txn.-1223402608 commit <Connection at 0b5a01ec> All rebuilds that resulted in an incorrect index had this - DEBUG txn.-1244382320 commit <Connection at 0965020c> Something different is being done, I'm just not sure what or why. Any suggestions as to why this is happening or where I should look to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
