looking for an easier way

I'm writing an exteranl method to store data into a sql data base. In my first attempts to do this I just had an external method dump whatever zope gave it to a text file, then looked. I came up with the following to split up the data the zope handed the external method and store it an sql. This works. However, I'm thinking there must be an easier way to capture what zope hands and external method. Apidoc hangover

Maybe apidoc had too much to drink over Christmas, but right now both the apidoc tool at zope.org and the one in a freshly installed local zopeproject are broken... I guess I should be drinking myself. ISSUE WITH PUBLIC APIDOC ----------------------------------------------- The public one [1] gives me a "The page that you are trying to access is not available" when I try to search for an interface. [1] http://apidoc.zope.org/++apidoc++/ Steps to reproduce: 1) visit http://apidoc.zope.org/++apidoc++/ 2) in the top left frame, click on the "Interfaces" link 3) in the lower left frame, write the name of an interface (or anything, actually) in the search field and hit enter 4) the lower left frame is replaced with a standard Zope 3 error page with the message "The page that you are trying to access is not available" ISSUE WITH LOCAL APIDOC ----------------------------------------------- A local Zope 3.4 instance freshly installed with zopeproject 0.4.1 gives me a "A system error occurred." in the main (right) frame when I try to browse the source code docs in several ways (but the Book content is OK). Steps to reproduce: 1) visit http://localhost:8080/++apidoc++ 2) in the top left frame, click on the "Interfaces" link 3) in the lower left frame, write the name of an existing interface in the search field and hit enter (for ex: IPrincipal) 4) click on any of the links displayed in the lower left frame as results of the search 5) the right frame shows "A system error occurred." (see traceback at the end of this message). I did a little research on the error, and found this page [2], which may contain an explanation. [2] http://peak.telecommunity.com/DevCenter/PackageNotes If you search that page for "not a directory" you'll find this: PEAK-0.5a4dev_r2085 peak test fails with an "IOError: [Errno 20] Not a directory" because RuleDispatch-0.5a0dev_r2083, an egg on which PEAK depends, installs as a zip, and the version of docutils included in PEAK isn't zip module savvy. Unzipping the RuleDispatch egg works around the problem. Is this another symptom of the growing pains as Zope becomes eggified? Cheers, and a great 2008 to all! import ZGadflyDA.gadfly: Ext Method or Python Script?

Hi, I would like to learn about using Gadfly, on a very little application. I put this in a "Python Script": from Products.ZGadflyDA import gadfly connection = gadfly.gadfly("rktmb_db", "demo") cursor = connection.cursor() cursor.execute("select * from pointage") for x in cursor.fetchall(): print x return printed In a page template, I call that script. I try to view the page template, then I am prompted for login and password (zope HTTP prompt), and my Zope manager login/pass is refused (re-prompted). If I cancel logging in, I get "unauthorized" because I am "not authorized to use ZGadflyDA in this context". So, must I only use external methods (duh!)? Or should I release some permission to make it OK? I am running Zope 2.9. Thank you.

ZPL and GPL: What should one consider when choosing a license?

Recently, someone wrote to me regarding one of my z3c packages which is licensed under the GPL. They asked me to license them under the ZPL saying that the ZPL would allow the widest range of use for those packages. They also implied that using the GPL impacted the licensing of other code that uses mine. Mostly this is just a debate I've never taken up before. I've always just chosen the GPL because it's the most aligned with my values and ideals on a "visceral" level. IOW, it's a gut choice not an educated choice. I realize this is an old debate. I found some lengthy threads on zope-dev from 2001, but I think there have been some license changes since then. I also read the following blog posts: http://radio.weblogs.com/0116506/2005/11/21.html#a370 http://awkly.org/2005/11/21/gpl-considered-harmful/ Unfortunately, the comment by Chris McDonough mentioned in the latter doesn't seem to be accessible any more. I'd love to read it. >From those blog posts, I don't really see any corroboration of the claims of the person who made the request that I switch to the ZPL. What exactly about the GPL narrows the range of developers who can use my code? What about the GPL impacts the license of other code that depends on my code? Here's what I want. I want anyone who modifies or forks my code to make their modifications just as accessible to myself and the community as my code is in the first place. I also want anyone who forks my code to credit me and other contributors as authors of the code they forked. I have a slight preference to allow proprietary code to depend on my code without having to open source their code. I definitely want commercial entities to be allowed to sell products and services that include my code as long as credit is given to the authors. That's just what I want from my admittedly naive perspective. I'd like to hear comments on why others think I should or shouldn't want any of those things from a license. I'd also like to hear how others think the license available relate to what I want from a license. Thoughts? Is there documentation somewhere about choosing a license?
