Don't use Solaris for Zope/ZEO!

Occasionally, someone asks whether Solaris is an adequate platform for Zope/ZEO deployment. Up to now, I answered to those questions -- we are using Solaris in our backend and up to now we did not see problems. This changed a few days ago -- we met an incredible limitation in Solaris: the number of "File" streams is limited to 256 in 32 bit applications.... This limitation caused us ZEO restarts once or twice a day since several days (with a completely stupid error message EAGAIN from "fdopen"). The problem is described in http://blogs.sun.com/mandalika/entry/solaris_workaround_to_stdio_s Don't use Solaris for Zope/ZEO, unless your are willing to deploy it as a 64 bit application (which we will try with our ZEO) or you are using at least Solaris 10 update 4. Watch out for "EAGAIN" exceptions from "fdopen" or other file creation functions. They indicate that Solaris has hit its 256 "File" limit.... -- Dieter

Some sort of rating system and comments about Zope products would be nice; like Joomla does with its extensions. For example: http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/lin k_id,1508/Itemid,35/ I can't say how much time I have wasted investigating dead-end or poorly or un-supported Zope products over the years. Hi, Am I doing anything wrong or filter parameter of browser:menuItem is just ignored? I have that problem in Plone but I suspect CMF ActionsTool if not Five itself. <browser:menuItem for="Products.Archetypes.interfaces.IBaseObject" menu="object" title="synchronize" action="synchronizeObject" permission="cmf.ModifyPortalContent" filter="string: object/whatever" /> I tried "whatever" Python Script, registered page view, etc. No success. HTML forms inside a Zsearch method

Hi, I would like to know how to set action for a selection button and checkbox inside the table that displays the data from the database.I have created a checkbox and selection button inside the template generated by Zsearch method uisng HTML code.I don't know how to set the value of the check box to the value that is fetched from database.Plz provide some help --------------------------------- Why delete messages? Thanks for the feed back. I didn't expect the responses i got from a post placed. I like some of the suggestions. Some one mentioned he used Zope 2 as a "container" for his Python scripts. He used Python as much as possible for logic and sparingly used DTML and ZPT to view the results. i like this approach. I'll stick with Zope 2 to continue the learning curve. I wanted to answer some questions asked by Martijn Fassen regarding grok and what I liked about Zope 2. I do like the Zope 2 ZMI. It helps organize visually your MVC. I do like coding TTW and seeing a template file or controller all organized in a project directory and testing live just by clicking the link. I also like the "ADD" feature. It list all the products/components you can add. It would be nice to have this in Grok since i don't know what is out there to add and what they do. And "add" feature with a description/docs and simple code example would be nice. Example would be the the "formlib". a database connection(relational) helper would be helpful too. I don't think i'll be diving into the ZODB right now for 2 reasons. There isn't a whole lot of ZODB docs and what happens if i create a project at work ( i,e, asset tracking ) and the other programmers in the office only know SQL . If i have all me data is in ZODB how will they be able to get at it? If the asset tracking app grows i know these other programmers will wont to get to the data to do some adhoc report. I'll be cooked if they can't get to it via SQL. Unless there is a way i have not read about yet! Maybe someone should write some reverse ORM to translate SQL and query a ZODB database!!! stupid i know. I will go through the Grok Tutorials again. i did have a problem with installation. "zope3recipes\winctl.py line 28" no module named win32api. i may have missed some prerequisite. I'll have to go through it again. Zope 2 had a nice windows install .exe package!!!!!!! The tutorial did have a few steps wrong. Naming the projects and packages come after module name and username and password. Not a big deal but i thought i would mention it. my Grok install ended up in c:\python24\scripts\sample it would be nice if Grok was installed in its own self contained directory with a self contained version of the required python version. Just nice to keep it isolated from python 2.5 +. The more docs and tutorials the better. Nothing in my opinion is more important to learning and sticking with a platform. if you run out of docs and tutorials to grow on you get soured quickly. once last thing about the ZMI and if it were to make its way to Grok ( even partially)! why not have the GMI add some code for you automatically like : import Grok Class Sample(grok.Application, grok.Container): pass Class index(grok.View): pass It would save typing if we could click "New App" and enter "Sample" and have the MI add the rest of the small code. Mabe i'm being lazy but Zope 2 seemed to hide this from you. same with the rest of the controllers and templates "add" "controller" enter "index". the rest of code is genersted. "add" "template" template name index.pt.

Portal catalog not always finding my content type

Hi, In some test code I add a custom content type called School. Then I check if it has been added to the portal catalog. And I call a function in a PAS plugin that searches for a School within the catalog and does something with that. This all works. Tests pass. I am happy. But in practice it somehow does not work. In the portal_catalog within the ZMI I can clearly see that a School is present in the catalog. But the code in my PAS plugin does not find it. And in a zopectl debug session I also cannot find it. Here is some code I use. Product is another custom content type. cat = getToolByName(self, 'portal_catalog') assert(len(cat()) > 5) assert(len(cat(portal_type='Product')) > 5) assert(len(cat(portal_type='School')) > 0) The first two assertions pass, so the catalog seems to be functioning properly. The last assertion fails. Can anyone think of a reason why this could happen? Should I add some more parameters to the catalog call? Should I use searchResults instead, or queryCatalog? This is on Plone 3.0 btw, with Zope 2.10.5. CMFPlone overwrites the default CatalogTool from zope, so I thought about asking on a plone list instead. But since it *does* go correct in the tests I thought it was probably not something Plone specific. Hi. I want to create a new Miniportal object that is pre-populated with a variety of content objects. I have just create a product for this but my problem is yhe insert of contents.
