Slicing a lazy sequence

Hi, I'm looking at a performance issue with a site. Part of the problem seems to be the time taken to load all the attributes to construct a large number of brain objects. I think I remember reading somewhere once that if you slice a sequence of catalog results as follows: rs = portal_catalog.searchResults(portal_type='my_type') return rs[10:30] or even <dtml-in "portal_catalog.searchResults(portal_type='my_type')" start=10 size=20> that this "undoes" the advantage of the lazy sequence, as it has to iterate over all the items in the sequence to produce the slice. Is this correct or have I just imagined it - can anyone confirm?! And if I haven't imagined it, how can I do this more efficiently? Thanks, Miles

backup full instances

Hello, We have several different zope instances running on our servers, and currently the only backup we do is a daily copy of the Data.fs. The main problem with this backup approach is, that the zope instance is not stopped for the backup at all, thus the Data.fs might not be up to date. Is it safe in general to copy Data.fs while the instance is running? Or might I end up with a broken Data.fs, which zope is not able to read at all? And which other ways to you know to backup an entire instance? Maybe sync it with ZEO to another server in realtime? Or use some export method? thanks in advance, jonas

I can get the database dump written to a file using subprocess and os.popen by using python on the command line or by using the python interpreter of the same python that runs zope. eg. this works outside zope: import os os.popen('pg_dump.exe database > outfile.txt') The same code in an external method does nothing. storing python objects

I need to run an external method to use some python functions that are restricted within zope. I'm thinking an easy way to get the data back would be to just store basic python objects within zodb; tupples, lists, dictionaries. but I've never seen this documented anywhere. Is it possible to store basic python objects directly in zodb? AND then use a zpt to read the data? I'm thinking a simple thing would be to create an external method that returns a dictionary. Then I could have script call the method, and stored the dictionary on zodb. Then have a zpt publish the dictionary. running pg_dump on windows as external method

I am using zope on windows with an external python method to backup my database. I am struggling to run the following command: pg_dump.exe database > file I have tried using os.popen - no luck and also subprocess.Popen. eg: import subprocess subprocess.Popen(['c:/dir/dir/pg_dump.exe','database','>','c:/dir/dir/output file']) The command string works perfectly in a terminal. Does anyone know how I should be doing this? I get no errors or traceback when I try the method through Zope. regards garry

object properties access strangeness

Hi all, I have problem with Zope 2.9.4, where I cannot get properties from acquired DTML Document in same way as from Image (both are in folder above, both objects with properties defined). It seems as to be a permission problem, but I was look through permissions at whole tree up to zope root. trying to implement server side xsl transform

Zope Version (Zope 2.10.3-final, python 2.4.3, linux2) using zeo storage I am trying to implement a server side XSL Transform with the tools I have installed. I have 4suite, libxml2, and libxsl. The all of the files are dtml documents. Listing 1 below works on the command line and writes an html file named 'foo' to the file system. So I added a def, a parameter to receive, and indent Listing 1 appropriately to run as an External Method. I also found, from this list in September 2006, an almost identical External Method using parseDoc instead of parseFile, and SaveToString instead of SaveToFile, see Listing 2 and the traceback that follows it. All combinations and attempts to use an External Method result in either parseDoc or parseFile failing. Also, the Zope server will not respond to WEB clients for as long as it is trying to process the External Method and Apache times out in about 100 seconds with a Proxy error and I usually have to restart the Zope server to get access back to it through a WEB client although ps doesn't show any unusual processor or memory usage. I have tried using Listing 1 and then read the file back in to return the html text but still get the same result, parse failed.
