Zope and permissions in Linux

I'm moving my web site from OS/2 to Suse 8.2 and I've a few questions to understand how to deal with the permissions. The installation creates a user called zope which owns the directory var/gadfly and also var/gadfly/demo. I tried to create another directory, gadfly/db to put my database files in. However, I could not 'su zope' as I didn't know the password given at install time. I was not present during the Suse install but my colleague doesn't remember having seen a password for Zope (as stated in a couple of pages online, the install script outputs a password). Then, I went root and I gave zope a new password. Only afterwards, I realised this was probably a mistake. What happens if I restart Zope? Anyways, even after changing the password i could not su zope. Nothing would happen. So to create var/gadfly/db I went root and then chown the directory to zope. Was this the correct procedure? Also, I've a little External method file to install. Should it be owned by root or by zope? Any good piece of advice regarding zope security in Linux? Unexpected Squid problems

Hi everyone, I recently set up a Squid frontend before ZEO server + a single ZEO client. Specs: ZEO: 2.0.1 Zope: 2.6.1 Storage: DirectoryStorage 1.0.1 Platform: Redhat Linux 8 with all erratas applied up to this date Kernel: 2.4.20 + aa1 patch Squid: 2.4.STABLE7-4 I successfully set up a cache peer thanks to Toby Dickenson's excellent howto: http://www.zope.org/Members/htrd/howto/squid After running Squid for about a week, I found something really annoying about this setup: Squid gives up on the ZEO client for dead when Zope is packing the ZODB. And the Squid manual says it'll query even a dead peer from time to time to see if it came alive, but that never happens. I'm running z2.py with --icp 3130. And the problem occurs only when packing is in progress. It seems when packing is in progress, Zope's taking too long to respond to queries sent from Squid. I tried adjusting timeout values as high as 20 seconds to no avail. Going for higher values looks really stupid. I have to restart Squid again and again. I even came up with a little shell script to grep Squid's cache.log every 10 minutes and restart the daemon if it finds a string containing 'Detected Dead Parent' ( and, of course, empty the log ). But it's so kludgy a solution :-( It gets worse. Last night, I added two more ZEO clients to this setup, and now I have three clients in total. Whenever the packing script runs, all three ZEO clients are pronounced dead by Squid and during this time no service is available. The 10-minute cron job restarted Squid as many as 5 times. The packing script is started by a single ZEO client. Anyone experienced a simliar problem? Here goes another. I haven't been able to track down the cause of this problem but having three ZEO clients takes much longer to serve ZODB than having a single ZEO client. For example, it used to take an average 1 second rendering a CMF document when I ran a single ZEO client, but it now takes an average 2.5 seconds with three clients. Plus, it generates conflicts too often. The slow performance, however, is not directly related to read conflicts since even with no conflict, the overall performance is way too bad. All three ZEO clients are 2-way/4-way Xeon servers with RAM to burn: 2G. Nothing is hogging any of their resources. All three of them are hooked up with ZEO server/Squid frontend in 100M bandwidth. Plone kills Zope

Hello, I'm working with the testing Debian packages of zope, cmf and plone, and I have some problems. 1) When I start zope there's no errors but, if I stop it I get: "stopping Zope...done (Zope was not runnig)", and, in fact, it's running. If I restart it, I get: "Zope is currently restarting (or something very strange)". This should not happen. Please stop and restart Zope" I stop (and again this message:"zope was not running") and start it, and everything's OK until I use Plone again. Can you help me? Using Internal exchange server email and Zope Mailhost

Hi, I have created an intranet system that is based on email notification on any actives users perform. Up until yesterday, we had an external email provider through our web hosting service. I used the Zope Mailhost feature and people with pop accounts were sent email through the zope server to the pop server and could view the mail on their email client. The Zope Mailhost enter was mail.test.com. I redirected the Mailhost entry to read mail1.test.com which points to our internal email system (exchange) but I see the following message: Exception Type SMTPServerDisconnected Exception Value Connection unexpectedly closed Any suggestions? [solved] formulator not reproducing its own results

If I convert the request/form/field_actitle to an integer like so: actitle python:int(request.field_actitle) the whole thing works like a charm. Score!!!! I used to have actitle request/form/field_actitle|nothing but postfixing |nothing to the python script above produces an error. Do you know how I can do the equivalent? a little complicated AccessRules

formulator not reproducing its own results

the formulator mailing list seams totally dead, so please don't mind me cross-posting... i have a formulator form which is designed to be able to call itself. what i mean with that, is that if you press the submit button, the form simply calls itself and initialises the fields with the values from the request. this works like a charm, except for list fields. for instance, i have a list field 'actitle', which uses integers to identify the items. you can look at the form here: http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/groups/newailab/internal/dbm/people/update?field_pi… the data for these fields come from a database. clicking 'commit' will pass the values with a GET request to the 'verify' script, which redisplays the same form (a macro), this time using the request variables. as you can see, the three list fields simply display the first value and don't honour the request. i render them like so: actitle.render(request/form/field_actitle) i believe the problem is that request/form/field_actitle is '60' (with the quotes), while the list field expects integers only. but i can't believe that formulator can't do this. am i doing something wrong? please offer any insights! thanks, -- martin; (greetings from the heart of the sun.) \____ echo mailto: !#^."<*>"|tr "<*> mailto:" net@madduck keyserver problems? http://keyserver.kjsl.com/~jharris/keyserver.html get my key here: http://madduck.net/me/gpg/publickey trap 'sleep 0' {1..15} dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 & cfgadm -c disconnect sysctrl0:slot? pray

restoring data from a previous transaction

Hi, due to a bug in my product I changed my data in a OOBTree-object. That bug was not discovered directly. In my undo log I can find the transactions before the bug was introduced.
