apache rewrite & authentication
by Oliver Skiebe 31 Jul '02

hi, we´ve set up apache to rewrite http requests /w a virtual host monster configured at the zope root; authenticating via cookies works only within the page called first; to access other restricted pages, we have to authenticate again. without apache rewriting everything works o.k. -> seems like apache doesn´t leave the authentication to zope but catches the cookie so zope doesn´t know that the user is already authenticated?! -> my question: is this a rewrite, authentication or proxying issue within apache / does anybody have a fix? thank you a lot in adveance, oliver -- This is Linux Country. On a quiet night, you can hear Windows reboot

ImageFile problem?
by Terry Hancock 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

I'm seeing a mysterious problem with ImageFile images in a Zope instance running on FreeBSD (I used the thread stack-size patch for Python, BTW). Python 2.1.3 and Zope 2.5.1. The images are defined essentially like this: class ImageContainer(Folder): # ... def __init__(self): self.img_a = ImageFile('www/Images/img_a.jpg', globals()) # ... class myproduct(Folder): # ... def __init__(self): self.Images = ImageContainer() # ... (This seems to work well with DTMLFile methods). On the first viewing of the page, everything works fine -- images come up as expected. However, if after the page loads in Netscape, I use "shift-reload" to reload all the images, ALL of the images loaded this way come up broken. Alternatively, if I used "view image" on the images, the browser hangs, and I eventually get "document contained no data". This behavior continues for additional attempts. Only after shutting down netscape and waiting for awhile does it work again (a day is certainly long enough, but five minutes may not be -- I haven't systematically tested to figure out how long I have to wait). Obviously that's unacceptable in practice! Any ideas about what could be going wrong? The reason these are loaded like this is so that I can use these for buttons and things without having to clutter up the instance space in the ZMI. They need to be accessible by URL, but don't need to show up in folder listing (I'd prefer that they didn't). Is there a better/safer way to do that? Yep, I see similar behavior. Zope doesn't respond until 30s+ after the service has supposedly restarted. I pack frequently, and my database is only 57mb. I can see a bunch of .py and .pyc files in sub-directories, so no ideas if some could be removed to force Zope to use byte-code-compiled files to speed things up. Anybody else running Zope 2.5.1 under W2K (256RAM, IDE drive) has to wait about 30s before it's up and running? Trailing spaces in ids?
by Howard Hansen 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

Since Zope doesn't allow spaces in object ids (a good thing), how come when I paste an object id into the interface, it allows a trailing space and incorporates it into the object's id? I've inserted DTML Documents, CMF Sites, MailHosts, RDF Summaries -- all manner of objects with spaces at the end and Zope accepts them just fine. Try it yourself! It gives interesting errors when you try to view those objects, but they do exist. Shouldn't the ZODB raise an error when _setObject gets called? If that's a hard change, then at least have the ZMI not strip the space off when building the list of objects in a folder. This is tough enough to debug without Zope conspiring against me! Icons not set right after Subclassing
by VanL 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

Hello, I have a Folderish Class "GenericHost". I then have some specializations of this host, declared as SpecialHost(GenericHost): (Differences here) SpecialHost2(GenericHost): (Differences) I then declare them in __init__ as follows: context.registerClass( Hosts.SpecialHost, constructors = (Hosts.addSpecialHostForm, Hosts.manage_addSpecialHost), icon = 'icons/SpecialHost.gif' ) context.registerClass( Hosts.SpecialHost2, constructors = (Hosts.addSpecialHost2Form, Hosts.manage_addSpecialHost2), icon = 'icons/SpecialHost2.gif' ) GenericHost is never registered. However, the icon directive is ignored; they all get a plain folder icon. When I do register GenericHost and give it its own icon, then everything then gets the GenericHost icon. Otherwise, everything works as expected. I've tried the misc_ trick, but I can't get it to work. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It seems like a waste to repeat all of the code just for the icons. TIA, VL

uploading, overwriting, and editing file (DTML Document)
by Tom Germaine 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

Good-day All: I would like to delegate certain users rights to upload an html file (to become a DTML Document), overwriting an existing file of same name and then run a script to edit the file, substituting dtml tags for lines at beginning and end of file. I am confused as to the best way to go about it. I can have them upload a DTMLDocument as a Zope object (using a form and DTML method, but cannot overwrite an already existing object of same name and don't know how to access the object to edit it as needed. My guess is that I should write an external script to do the editing, but am unsure of whether or not to upload to local file system instead of Zope object and how to access file system files as DTML Documents. I have reviewed the FAQ on product LocalFS, but am unsure if I need it, or if displaying DTML Documents stored in file system is the way to go. Any advice would be appreciated. Tom

Which for small table: ZODB, TinyTable, Gadfly, MySQL?
by David Elfstrom 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

Hi, I've got a static table of 60 rows consisting of: firstname, lastname, department, email, telephone and I'd like to display this list in a table that can be sorted by clicking on the column headings. Considering the size, what would be the 'best practices' way of doing this? a) creating objects and searching through ZODB, b) TinyTablePlus product c) Gadfly database d) MySQL database (seems like overkill) e) something else?? IE and cookies
by Terry Hancock 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

Hi all, I'm running into a problem with CookieUserFolder which will probably apply to cookies in general, in which Internet Explorer and Konquerer are apparently having problems, while Netscape and Mozilla don't. This rings a bell about a difference in the handling of cookies. I remember a recommendation that cookie-based login be done from a top-level folder to avoid problems with IE, but now I can't find it, despite quite a bit of searching -- I'm not using the right keywords or something. Does anyone remember where I might find this information? I did find this note: (Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 15:38:36 -0400) > Anyways, the problem occurs because Zope does > not set the "PATH=" attribute in the cookies > it sends and hence simply relies on the client > to default it. IE also does the same thing ; probably > for compatability reasons. And now so do we. ( http://bugs.kde.org/db/23/23794.html ) Is this still true? I'm not sure whether this is related or not, though. What are the consequences to a cookie-based authentication from this? Best Class for Persistent, Ordered List
by Ross Boylan 31 Jul '02

31 Jul '02

I want the semantics of python lists with persistence; in particular, I want to be sure that if I put objects in the list I will later get them out in the same order. I have been using PersistentList, borrowed from somewhere, that is basically a regular list with a little persistence machinery tickling added. I notice that there are BTree classes and related set classes, in particular OOSet. Does anyone know if that preserves order? From the name and the test suite it looks as if it doesn't, even though it has sequence semantics. I've looked at the c source only enough to see the answer is not immediately obvious there! So will OOSet do what I want? If not, is something else appropriate? Thanks.
