Uploading files into Zope via Web
by Karen E. Roth 28 Jul '02

I have a project I'm working on where people with the proper authorization will be permitted to upload files (Zip files or possibly folders) into a holding place on my Zope server. The thing is this needs to be done via the web, not FTP or by logging directly into the content management interface. After searching zope.org the only thing I came up with that was even close was the ZImporter, which is just for importing the .zexp or .xml files back into Zope. I could use a database, but it seems like such overkill to have one running (And to have to maintain it) for someone to upload a file every once in awhile and the file wouldn't even end up staying in the database. Ultimately the goal is to have a web interface that only certain people can access and someone will just place their file in the upload area and then never see where it goes or have to worry anything at all about learning Zope or having FTP. Is this doable easily and I'm just missing something? Or maybe a Product that I haven't found does this...I'm mainly fishing for people's opinions on what would be the easiest and least painful solution to this. Thanks so much! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - Feel better, live better http://health.yahoo.com

Hi , With ZTUtils i am having a problem .Could someone who is working on this area please help me out. batch python:modules['ZTUtils'].Batch(results, size=12, start=start) If the result set is equal to12 then I get the resultset IF the result set is lesser than 12 then i am getting a message container.REQUEST.form['n'] WHat does this mean?I figure that i have to give SIZE=(exact number of records) But how can i get it?IS there some function for this? Re: [Zope] creating instances of ZDiscussions programatically
by Dennis Allison 28 Jul '02

Sure Chris... The product is a mixed DTML/Python thing with base classes in Python. The usual instantation is via the ZMI where you create a instance of the Zclass, then on a separate tab, copy in the code which does the high level interface. I want to create instances programmatically--that is, I have a form which allows my users to create a discussion thread. I'd thought that I could simply simulate the ZMI mechanisms in Python or DTML, This fails both when accessed expicitly and when accessed using the through-the-web interface. I suspect protections but have not found the right ones to toggle. Non of the literature I have at hand talks much about instantiating ZClasses from programs... Had I a bit more time, I'd redo the whole system as a Python Product but there's no time for such. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

You are doing a wonderful thing. I would like to make a few suggestions... I've noticed that many people who start with Zope are coming familiar with basic web concepts and, more importantly, are coming from work on other application servers that, for whatever reasons, were not providing the functionality needed. Newbies need a context and a paradigm with which to work FIRST, before the other things begin to make sense. Aside from navigating (plus cut/copy/paste) in the management screen, the first thing would be: 1. Object Publishing (how to make an object appear on the web via a URL. That seems elementary, and it is. Moreover, there is some instant gratification and the hope that they can do something useful (and are not wasting their time). There is also a list of "common things" that people do on a web site that force the site builder to add certain functionality. Consequently, the newbie asks basic questions like "How to I list objects on the site?" How do I link to objects within the site? How do I list only _certain_ objects?" etc. What they want in those instances is a brief explanation and some sample code (sometimes they just want the code). Don't belabor the explanation. Be brief and just state how to do it. You can always add a link to documentation that explains it in full, if they are interested (most often, however, they won't be interested). The list of "how you do this and that" would form the bulk of your work, and would be a huge help to the newbie community (and a reference to those who are experienced but can't quite remember how to do it). The next chapters would be _intermediate_ explanations on fundamental issues, such as aquisition, security, etc. -- but in a way that adds only to the practical functionality of web sites. This is more in the line of "tips and tricks" as opposed to detailed explanations. Again, show functionality and only _link_ to the detailed explanations. The final chapters would be devoted to links to detailed documentation AND provide the various options available in Zope for solving problems, such as building things with ZClasses versus Products, CMF, etc. In short, the last section of the book is a road map of where to find other things in greater detail, with an explanation of what potential those solutions offer. That is what I would do. (More importantly, that is what I always wanted when I was a newbie.) Good luck and best wishes, Ron

Right. Thanks.... just the magic needed to solve the problem. > > There's a method named "read" on PythonScript objects. It returns the > source of the Python Script including the "##" header lines. In answer to my query,"Chris McDonough" <chrism(a)zope.com> wrote: > This works: > > context.manage_addProduct['PythonScripts'].manage_addPythonScript('bar > ') and indeed it does. But there's another problem--I'm copying a Python script and that requires special magic -- the source script needs to be deconstructed and the destination constructed. I don't see a neat way to do that with te API. Any hints? -dra

OT: WebDAV, WebDrive
by peter sabaini 28 Jul '02

Hi list, please forgive the off-topic post, this has has nothing todo with Zope per se, but since there seem to be some WebDrive users here I thought I'd try. On those occasions when I work under win32 I'd like to get WebDrive to connect to Zope, mainly editing with XEmacs. The problem is every so often (I havent been able to reproduce this reliable) WebDrive tells me it got a 404 Not found when editing an object. Z2.log says WebDrive tries to POST to /_vti_bin/ something, which looks FrontPage-ish to me, though I configured WD to use WebDAV not FrontPage. Any clues as to how I should configure this? Or is there a better WebDAV client for win32 out there? Or should I resort to FTP? Thanks, peter. ps: platform: windows 2000, zope 2.5.1, webdrive 5.1

Thanks Chris .... just what I needed. Now if I can only solve the equivalent problem for ZDisccussions, a mixed product done as a ZClass with Python Base Classes, I'll be totally happy!

Python Scripts
by Dennis Allison 27 Jul '02

I'm trying to create a Script (Python) object on the fly. I know the constructor is manage_addPythonScript and the metatype is 'Script (Python)'. What I can't figure out is the appropriate Dispatcher? I've looked and elsewhere to no avail. I have tried manage_addProduct['OFSP'], but it's clearly not the right one. Some other obvious permutations also failed. I've been led to believe that the proper dispatcher for foldershi items is manage_addProduct['OFSP'], but what about for other products? In the same vein, what is the Dispatcher for ZClasses? manage_addZClass?
