RE: [Zope] [ZClass constructor question]: How can I copy objects into my container class?
by Simon Brogden 22 Nov '01

Hi Jim, Nice one! I went with the script approach and called from within the: <dtml-with productname.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], ...)> All worked fine. Thank you. I looked at the other approaches you mentioned: <dtml-with newitemname> ... </dtml-with> & <dtml-call "newitemname.init()"> Much headscratching. What do I replace 'newitemname' with to get it to work? I tried "REQUEST['id'].init()" and several variants but get "Attribute errors" about "init". The only way I can get stuf fto work is when the init() call is made inside the "<dtml-with productname.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], ...)>" block. I guess I need help figuring out how to look-up the name of the item that's contained in the var 'id' and use it as part of the call. Thanks again, Simon. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Washington Sent: Thu 22/11/2001 01:17 To: Simon Brogden; zope(a)zope.org Cc: Subject: Re: [Zope] [ZClass constructor question]: How can I copy objects into my container class? upload to localFS with form
by Frank Löffler 22 Nov '01

Hi, localFS is: doku I want to upload to a subfolder: test. Using these codes won't work: <dtml-with "doku.test"> <dtml-call expr="manage_addProduct['OFSP'].manage_addFile (name, file=file)"> </dtml-with> or <dtml-call expr="doku.test.manage_addProduct['OFSP'].manage_addFile (name, file=file)"> or <dtml-with "doku.test"> <dtml-call expr="manage_addFile (name, file=file)"> </dtml-with> or <dtml-call expr="doku.test.manage_addFile (name, file=file)"> What's wrong ? In zope it works just fine but it doesn't if the subfolder is in an localFS. What does: manage_addProduct['OFSP'] mean, got it from a another posting. cu, Frank

ZGDChart: Data Method tab is empty and other questions
by Panos Hilaris 22 Nov '01

22 Nov '01

Greetings to everybody! I have installed ZGDChart-0.6.1.babel.tgz in the Products. I am using Zope 2.4.1 in linux. I create ZGDChart objects in folders, but the ``Data Method'' tab is always empty, so it seems I can not bind the chart to some query, even though appropriate queries exist in the same folder as a ZGDChart object. The gdchartdemo example (imported from file gdchartdemo.zexp of older release: ZGDChart-bin-0.5.tar.gz) seems to work fine (charts appear as expected), but the ``Data Method'' tabs are again empty, so there is no obvious way how graphs are binded to queries. Another problem: I can not use the example at: http://www.zope.org/Members/teyc/ZGDChart/ZGDChart-example.gz/view (it does not seem to be a gzip file). And one more general question: Is there a way to specify a runtime query for the graph? Something like a zgdchart_runtime_query argument at the argument of the chart method, just like the zgdchart_runtime_title argument for changing the title of the graph. In fact, it seems to me such that a method, i.e., specifying the data to be presented in the code, and not using the ``Data Method'' tab, is better for my purposes. Thanks in advance, Panos Hilaris

Some of them were in the old collector. I dont think it would be humanly possible to list them all. Its more than a few bugs which individually may be fixable... Zope's http layer simply wasnt designed with this kind of robustness in mind, and its only a small exaggeration to say that *everything* is wrong. Also, Im not sure its worth the effort. This isnt the only compelling reason for using a font-end proxy. Using a proxy makes this problem a non-issue, so why bother fixing it?

I hate to be put in the position of defending Microsoft, but the OS didn't fall over. Neither did my DSL connection. Zope did. As of about 8:00 PM CST today my site has served more than 120,000 pageviews. Not bad, and it's settled down now, but I was having to restart Zope every hour or so for most of the day. > > If you try to do something similar with ANY OTHER platform (lets say > Apache+PHP+PHPNuke; or IIS+ASP+some forum software or other) > you're also going to get into the same kind of problems. THAT is precisely > your problem. You want to be able to build rockets without taking a course > in rocket science. Dont misunderstand me; you can still fire rockets or > build amateur rockets; just dont try to reach the moon. First of all, I never claimed to be cluefull. That's why I came here and asked the question. But neither am I clueless. The -S switch has been bothering me for a while. Do a search on zope.org for "command line switches" nothing. Nothing in any of the Zope documentation that I can find. Nor in any of the three Zope books currently in print. Even the Windows-specific doc doesn't say anything about the -S switch. Being a writer/information architect isn't my problem. Nor is it relevant to this issue. Get used to it; we're here and we need your help. But you need our help just as much. And to use your metaphor, I have no interest in building rockets, only flying them. Better get used to that too; there are a lot more of us than there are of you. > > Here are some tips: > > - enable caching on Zope Done and already cited. > - change from Windows to Linux Maybe, but again, Windows didn't fall over--Zope did. > - install more RAM on your PC 768Mb is the maximum I can install in what I've got. Reading cookie strings in Zope
by Mark Spencer 22 Nov '01

22 Nov '01

Can anybody show me where there is some good example code of how to read from multiple keys in a cookie (using Zope)? I can get saving of multiple keys to work in Zope, but I don't know how to read and process the multiple saved items in a cookie (to update the users preferences for the layout of a dhtml page) regards, Mark Spencer, Blazer Technologies P/L. email: markwspencer(a)bigpond.com

Nice mention of zope

Just found that, a press release from EuroLinux Alliance: http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2001-11-21-021-20-PR-LL "EuroLinux welcomes this move. An EU country now officialy endorses open standards and open source / free software through an application law. It confirms the adoption of open source / free software within European public administrations. For Harmut Pilch, president of the FFII, "projects including the GnuPG cryptographic software, the SLIS communication server for schools, the Mioga toolkit for extranet or the Yihaw portal component for Zope have proven that the use of open source / free software through customisation and maintenance contracts between public administrations and commercial software companies is an efficient and sustainable economic model for software infrastructure."" FFII is "Förderverein für eine Freie Informationelle Infrastruktur" something like foundation for a free infrastructur of information cheers, oliver

It works; you need to specify the client you are trying to use, as some clients are non-standard, or do funky things. Most clients should work without problem, AFAIK... There really does seem to be a popular demand for a HOWTO, and I have a need to put on together for my coworkers as well, so I'll likely put one together in the next few weeks... for now, there should be bits and pieces of messages from me in the list archives to piece some of the picture together. Don't suppose you'd be up to putting this in a HOWTO on zope.org? This, like many aspects of high-volume serving, seems to be something that people usually have to discover for themselves, the hard way... Richard

stopping acquisition
by Stephan Goeldi 22 Nov '01

22 Nov '01

Probably a newbie question: how can I stop acquisition from a certain point? e.g. when I have a folderish object which contains about 100 documents. The folderish object has a property. I don't want that the 100 documents take over this property. Can I manage that other than editing all the 100 properties? It would be cool if I could stop it like in the security settings _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
