"Last used" property for objects
by Etienne Labuschagne 17 Sep '01

17 Sep '01

Hi all Is there a way of determining when an object was "last used". This would be handy to find objects that may not be referenced in a site anymore (eg. images that are not linked in any page anymore) and would make it easier to clean up a site of old components. Thanks Etienne

example of REQUEST.form.keys() or REQUEST.form.items()?
by Chris Cioffi 17 Sep '01

17 Sep '01

I've created a form with several dynamically named fields. I can see the fields and the data with <dtml-var "REQUEST.form.items()">, but I don't know how to access the data within a <dtml-in ...> loop. How do I access the variables? The Zope book doesn't say and other documentation/examples has eluded my searching so far. Chris

listing on download.com
by David Lutz 17 Sep '01

17 Sep '01

Hi, Would anyone mind if I upload the latest versions of Zope for all platforms to http://www.download.com/ ? They only have Zope 2.1.1 at the moment. Also while I'm at it I could put Zope on http://www.tucows.com/ and http://www.simtel.net/ I figure Zope is very cool software and more people should know about it! Cheers, David.

Extracting just the string of the zope file or dtml object
by Andy Bulka 17 Sep '01

17 Sep '01

How do I ensure that the string *contents* of my Zope object is passed to an external method, rather than passing the zope object itself? E.g. if mydtmldoc is a DTML document with plain text inside it myFile is a file object with content-type plain text then when I call <dtml-call "ProcessAstring1('a literal string')"> <dtml-call "ProcessAstring1(mydtmldoc)"> <dtml-call "ProcessAstring1(myFile)"> I get Got string Got DTML Document Got File respectively in my external method. I really just want the string contents of these zope objects. I want to be able to do all sortd of string operations on them - but this is not working since python complains they are not strings. My test external method is simply def ProcessAstring(astr): print 'Got', safetest(astr) # safetest I got off this mailing list, and is listed below How do I just get at the string being passed? Or how do I just pass the raw string? thanks Andy Bulka ----------------------------- def safetest(object): if object is None: return 'None' s = str(object) if object==s: return 'string' try: t = object.meta_type return t except: pass try: l = len(object) if s[0]=='[': return 'list' if s[0]=='(': return 'tuple' if s[0]=='{': return 'dict' return 'sequence' except: pass try: t = object.timeTime() return 'DateTime' except: pass try: val = int(object) if val is object: return 'integer' return 'number' except: return 'unknown'

the PropertyManager API
by Mitchell L Model 16 Sep '01

16 Sep '01

This is a longish discourse on the methods provided by PropertyManager for manipulating properties, with suggestions for improvements. I'd be interested in discussion of these suggestions, historical reasons why things are the way they are, how people use the existing API, etc. To give this discussion some concrete context, here's how it arose. I was writing a Python script to set up my web site. (For various reasons I don't want to do this manually, including wanting to be able to reorganize things as I develop the site and generating a hierarchy of about 250 folders and from a text outline that defines the site structure.) I want to set some properties on some of the folders after I create them. I want the script to be smart about initializing things, adding properties that aren't there and changing properties that are. I came up with the following idiom, which I had to repeat in various places (and so abstracted to another Python script). (Uppercase names here signify arguments to that script, for clarity here.) if FOLDER.hasProperty('NAME'): FOLDER.manage_delProperties([NAME]) FOLDER.manage_addProperty(NAME, DESCRIPTION, TYPE) For reference, here are the methods in PropertyManager.py: "public" "private" Web interface valid_property_id _propertyMap manage_addProperty hasProperty _wrapperCheck manage_editProperties getProperty _setPropValue manage_changeProperties getPropertyType _delPropValue manage_changePropertyTypes propertyIds _setProperty manage_delProperties propertyValues _updateProperty propertyItems _delProperty propertyMap propertyLabel propdict I was disturbed by several things about this method collection: 1. Since this is an internal programmatic manipulation of the site, I shouldn't really be using the Web interface (though there's nothing wrong with it). Yet, there's no public deleteProperty or setProperty. (Although there are corresponding "private" methods, there are various issues in using them, not all aesthetic: for instance, PropertyManager.py includes the public methods, but not the private ones, in __ac_permissions__ under 'Access contents information'.) Shouldn't there be public versions of _setPropValue, _setProperty, _delPropValue, _delProperty, and _updateProperty? 2. The name "update" is used for the private method, but "change" for the web version; these should be made consistent. 3. _setProperty should really have been called _addProperty, since that's what it does. 4. There are no methods in any of the three categories to do what "set" normally does in languages and libraries: change if there, add if not. I realize that this is complicated somewhat by the fact that a type is needed if the property is new but not if it isn't. Nevertheless, It seems to me that there should be public, private, and web methods to do this most typical operation. They would have to take a type argument, for when the property doesn't exist. (Interesting question what it should do when the type argument disagrees with an existing property -- it should probably replace the type as well as the value.)

import from a product's Extensions
by Mitchell L Model 16 Sep '01

16 Sep '01

While debugging in pdb I want to experiment with some Python methods in my product's Extensions folder. I can import modules from my product directory, but I can't figure out how to import from my product's Extensions directory. Given a product named Prod and a file Utils.py in Extensions, none of the following work: import Prod.Extensions.Utils import Prod.Utils import Products.Prod.Extensions.Utils import Products.Prod.Utils
