Version info from the command line?
by Russell Hires 19 Aug '01

Hello everyone, I have a question: is there a way to determine the version of zope that is being run from the command line? The reason I want to know this is because I have a "brilliant" idea (just don't count on me to implement it ;-) : I see all of these Products that people are making, and they all say "Just untar this to your products directory." I'd like to have a more elegant solution, like a python script that does this for you: it finds out what Zope you're running, where the Products directory is and puts it in there, restarts zope... I can never remember the directory structure of my install, and I hate having to struggle with finding the Products directory and fiddling around with tar (I know, just being lazy, but what can I say?). I also think it would be better for people who don't want to fool around with all of these steps to install a product...they just type "install_zproduct <product-name>" or something (because this command would come with zope) and it's gunzipped, untarred, moved to the correct directory, and zope is restarted (if necessary)...voila! Your product is installed! Thanks for the info. Russell

Permissions / System design (zope Newbie)
by Tilo Renz 19 Aug '01

Hello, I have two user groups (role student and role staff). In the following setup the method view shows Information about the XY-File stored as Properties of XY.pdf. Both roles should be allowed to view this information. _The students_must_not_be able to download XY.pdf._ My Setup: +-+-DTML-Method: view I +-Folder: data I +-File: XY.pdf In order to make data/XY.pdf/view accessible to the students they must have the rights 'view' and 'Access contents information' on XY.pdf. Which means they also can download the file, which is unwanted. Now I thought for solutions: Variant A: Replace the view method by a python script show(id) which gets the Document-Id (eg XY.pdf) as Parameter and is called on the data-folder. Then setting up a proxy for show(id), so that students can call it, although they don't have any permissions on XY.pdf: +-+-python-Script: show(id) I +-Folder: data I +-File: XY.pdf I must call data/show?id=XY.pdf to get the information about XY Disadvantages: Not really object oriented. Needs writing a new show-script and rewriting other methods in the project because calls are now going to other URLs. More difficulties if show needs additional cgi-Parameters Variant B: Setting up 2 Trees, data for the staff, public for students. Write a script that copies everything from data to public except the Files like XY.pdf, which should be 0-Byte copies, but with all properties. Disadvantages: Ugly redundancy. Costs disk-space and time for copying. What do you think about my problem? What should I do? Have I overseen something and are there better solutions? Thanks in advance. Tilo

OT: creating unique IDs for table rows
by Carlos A. Carnero Delgado 18 Aug '01

18 Aug '01

Hiya all, what's a good method for creating unique IDs for rows in a table of a database? I need to create that for an unique index which will serve as foreign key to another table. I'm currently creating a string which adds a current time (GMT) and a random number then I get a SHA digest out of it. It works well for testing purposes, but I'd like to get something more orthogonal and with more "uniqueness". BTW, the underlying RDBMS doesn't support autogenerated sequences or anything like that. Thanks, Carlos.

<dtml-var xxxx javascript_quote>
by Loren Stafford 18 Aug '01

I find myself stuffing arbitrary strings into javascript pop-up displays, but those strings often contain characters (e.g. quotes) that break the genearated javascript syntax. I know there is no javascript_quote argument for dtml-var, and I probably have to filter the string with an external method. Does anyone have such an external method already in use that you could share with the list? -- Thanks -- Loren

tree-item-url bug ?
by Gilles Lenfant 18 Aug '01

18 Aug '01

Hi, Seems its a bug of tree-item-url (Zope 2.3.3) or I missed something ? /foo/index_html (dtml doc) contains: <dtml-tree bar branches="objectValues">> <img src="&dtml-icon;"> <a href="<dtml-var tree-item-url>"><dtml-var titre></a> </dtml-tree> Renders good, but the URL links generated by "tree-item-url" forget the "root" component of the URL. In example for an object that's at "/foo/bar/anboject", the "tree-item-url" is http://localhost:8080/foo/anobject when it should be http://localhost:8080/foo/bar/anobject !!! Any clue ? TIA --Gilles

parsing XML documents into Zope
by Mitchell L Model 18 Aug '01

What's the best Product to use to parse XML documents into Zope? I saw a number of XML-related Products, but my attempt to install a few of them leads me to suspect that many of them are obsolete and don't even load into Zope 2.4 (or at least not with their instructions as given).
