That helped a lot. I was really surprised when a search for 'parent' in the Help browser turned up nothing appropriate. I was even more surprised just now when a search for 'aq_parent' turned up nothing _at_all_! _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

manage_clone and proxy roles
by Lee Harr 17 Aug '01

I have a folder "test" and in the folder "test" there is another folder "f". I want to have a method (preferably a python method) which creates a copy of "f" in the folder "test" and I want anyone to be able to do it (not just managers) so, I created a python method "c" as: context.manage_clone(context.test.f, 'f2') return "done" which works fine when I am logged in as manager, but throws up a login dialog when I am not. No problem, I figure, set the proxy role on "c" to 'Manager' and everything should be cool. Nope. Hmm. I think maybe this is not possible from python methods, so I try a dtml-method, as such: <dtml-call "manage_clone(f, 'f3')"> done Again, works fine when I am logged in as manager, but even if I set the proxy role on the method to 'Manager' I get the login dialog. This is one Zope 2.3.2 Any wisdom appreciated. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

RE: [Zope] best way to define variables for form parameterization ?
by Meilicke, Scott 17 Aug '01

Assign properties to the appropriate folders. Just as Title is a property, you can create a property called orgloc and assign it a value. You can get to properties from the manage screen. Click into a folder, click the properties tab. Scott -----Original Message----- From: Mitchell L Model [mailto:mlm@acm.org] Sent: Friday, August 17, 2001 10:37 AM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] best way to define variables for form parameterization? What's the best way to define variables to be used in a parameterized DTML document? Let's say I have a folder hierarchy where all the folders can share a single index_html at the root, except that there are a couple of differences in various places that are not directly derivable from the usual variables (id, title, etc.). For instance, an organization chart represented as a folder hierarchy, and a standard welcome page that includes among other things the physical location of the part of the organization represented by the selected folder and the phone number of the receptionist at that location. My index_html page could have <dtml-var orgloc> and <dtml-var receptPhone> buried in it somewhere, then all I have to do is define orgloc and receptPhone at appropriate places in the folder hierarchy. I could of course make them DTML Methods that just returned a string, but it seems pretty heavy-handed to define a method just to get a variable value. Is there a better way to specify variable values? Some kind of dictionary mechanism? Suppose I had 10 or 20 such variables -- I wouldn't want to deal with the proliferation of one-line DTML Methods throughout the hierarchy. I just want a way for each folder to register values of whatever variables it wants to override, for use by parameterized pages. One thought I had was to subclass ObjectManager (either in Python or as a ZClass) and add a mechanism that looks in a dictionary stored in a "variables" instance variable, then if the desired variable wasn't there, look at the parent, etc. Before I launch off into this escapade, please tell me if (a) there's a straightforward way to define variables like this; (b) the whole idea is confused; or (c) there's an available Product for this. _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

Dynamic HTML Forms
by McMains, Sean 17 Aug '01

17 Aug '01

Hi Folks, We're working on a transaction processing system. At one point in the flow, an administrator needs to see a list of all pending requests, and approve or reject them. Since the information is all in a database, we'll be doing a query against the database to build the form on the fly. If the first row has a field called "value1", the second a field called "value2", etc, how do you go about processing the results from the form when you don't know how many fields there will be? Or is there a better approach to this problem than naming the fields like this? When I've done similar things in ASP, I'd pass the number of rows in the form as a hidden field, and then use that value to iterate through the fields. Is there something comparable to do in Zope, or is there a better way to do this? Still very new to Zope, so be gentle. :-) Thanks for any help! Sean McMains

Zope promotion...
by Chris Keyes 17 Aug '01

17 Aug '01

Hi All I was wondering the other day if any body was in charge of zope promotion?? There seems to have been a relevant topic in zope-dev discussing the placement of Zope on CNET and so on... I was browsing the SuSE Linux Portal http://portal.suse.de/en/ And thought it would be good for Zope to get articles on similar sites... At least then people would get to know about Zope and so on, which I would hope would be good... Anyone else got any thoughts? Cheers Chris K

How to put a dictionary in REQUEST?
by Loren Stafford 17 Aug '01

17 Aug '01

I just discovered that the REQUEST object doesn't support dictionaries. Right? So, given that I'm writing DTML because I'm in the middle of a calendar tag, how can I create a dictionary for the duration of a request and add items to it? -- Loren

Zope's performance on xBSD
by Giorgos Verigakis 17 Aug '01

17 Aug '01

Hello, I'm using Zope on FreeBSD and OpenBSD and I've noticed some serious performance issues. Since I hadn't experienced any problems at the past with Linux, I did some benchmarks. I've written a small program that connects to Zope and tries to retrieve a non-existant URL (source code appended). While Linux performed almost linearly depending on the number of hits/sec, FreeBSD and OpenBSD performed exponential. I did the following experiment: I installed a binary distribution of python-1.5.2 (pkg_add or apt-get) and I compiled Zope-2.3.3+HotFix from sources (with wo_pcgi.py). I entered Zope's management screen and expanded all folders. I ran the previous program and after about 1000 hits I reloaded the page and measured the time it gets to finish. The results are below: |---------------------+------------+---------------+-------------+ | OS | Hit Rate* | Real hit rate | Reload time | | | (hits/sec) | (hits/sec) | (sec) | |---------------------+------------+---------------+-------------+ | | 30 | 20 | 13 | | Linux debian 2.2.19 | 50 | 33 | 16 | | | 100 | 38 | 16 | |---------------------+------------+---------------+-------------+ | | 30 | 20 | 10 | | FreeBSD 4.3-Release | 50 | 33 | 23 | | | 100 | 40 | 100 | |---------------------+------------+---------------+-------------+ | | 30 | 20 | 10 | | OpenBSD 2.9-Release | 50 | 33 | 15 | | | 100 | 50 | 285 | |---------------------+------------+---------------+-------------+ *The hit rate is the one passed as an argument to the program, while real hit rate was calculated according to Zope's log file. All tests were ran on the same computer, a 600MHz Celeron with 192MB RAM These tests were ran using the default Data.fs. When I use a real Data.fs + my products I even get time outs when I try to access the content. Why is there such a difference between the OSs? Do the BSD users of this list experience similar problems? siteroot with virtualhostmonster
by Fritz Mesedilla 17 Aug '01

17 Aug '01

finally, what i've always wanted to do with the zope server domain name and port, hide it. i first tried virtualhostmonster but when we processed an input form, the value needed the PATH_INFO and it reflected the virtual stuff and therefore crashed the form. but with siteroot it did the same thing that vhm did, hide the port numbers. now with them together, is it safe to keep them that way? or do i have to delete vhm? please help me in understanding the differences between the two. thank you. changing ZClass bases
by Mitchell Model 17 Aug '01

17 Aug '01

I'm an extremely experienced object technologist just getting into Zope. The Zope Book (p. 211) says that it's not possible to change the base classes of a ZClass. The wording and context are a bit ambiguous, so I'm not entirely sure, but the obvious reading is that once you've defined a ZClass you cannot add, remove, or replace any of its base classes. Is this true? Or does it just mean "not through the techniques being discussed in that part of the book"? What do I do if I've been developing a ZClass and decide I need to add (or remove) some functionality through base classes? For example, suppose I want to add persistence later on? Is the answer different if I don't have any instances I need to keep? Is there a way to export a ZClass to an editable text format, so I could delete it from Zope, make the changes, then reimport it?
