Hi, I'm getting bounces of messages sent to zope(a)zope.org with aparently large binary attachments. Luckily they are too big to get thru automatically. Looks like spammers are around and faking identities. Is it possible to enhance the list software to check gpg keys of posts? Just an idea... ++Tino

Hi , I´m looking for a Product for Zope to call any generic object.method with permission checking and with a generic object response to caller. Do you know some product for this? or it´s not neccesary a product to make it. thanks. jose

Dear friends. A few days ago the Ruby on Rails development team published the 1.0 release. At that occasion the Zope fans are reminded how far Zope fell far behind in terms of attention and recognized widespread. Python has batteries included. Zope is a power plant. But still everyone speaks of Django, Turbogears or Ruby on Rails. Even if they talk about the shortcommings of J2EE. Some of the best content management systems are build using Zope 2. CPS, ZMS and my favourite: Plone. And Typo3 gets even more attention. Why? Because we failed. We aren't marketing Zope at all. Have a look at zope.org. Do you think, that any CEO will stay at that site more than 10 seconds? Have a look at rubyonrails.org and cry. Zope 3.2 will be delivered soon. Have any look at zope.org where is You got it. To a certain extent Zope 2 was attracting like a nuclear power plant. Whenever I start programming with Zope 2, latest for Plone, I can feel its power before even diving into it much, but I'm alarmed of its pitfalls at the very same time. So all my hopes are with Zope 3 which enabled me without hurting me yet. Will I get a truly powerful replacement for J2EE? Here are my ideas to make Zope 3 the most successful framework ever: Make them love Zope at the very first look: * Make installing Zope a double-click or one-command-only experience and * offer a 30 minutes tutorial of programming an useful application including an audiovisual show for an appetizer that offers a feeling of success. Bribe the managers: * Include Microsoft SQL-Server and Oracle relational database access. * Include powerful XML processing facilities and * include everything necessary and useful to build or use web services. Enable the beginners: * Easy to read and understand but still complete and current documentation is a must. * Avoid cluttering everything about Zope across articles, blogs, chats, mailing lists and wikis. Keep everything available and searchable at one central location. Remember: The power of Ruby on Rails doesn't come from either Ruby or the framework but from its community. wrong directoy in Control_Panel.Products.XXXX.home

A while ago I changed the directory of my zope instance. I also changed the zope directory (started with zope 2.8.1, now running 2.8.4). Today I noticed that the CMFQuickInstaller failed to get the version and the readme of various products. It happens that CMFQuickInstaller uses Control_Panel.Products.getObj(id).home to determine the product's directory and then reads the version.txt file from there. However many products had the old directory name stored in home (like /usr/local/zope-2.8.1-final instead of /usr/local/zope-2.8.4-final, or the directory I used before changing the name). Everything has been working fine (apart for the breakage of CMFQuickInstaller) but I wonder if this is the intended behavior and if there is better way to update the information in Control_Panel (touching __init__.py in the offending products and restarting zope didn't help, I had to remove the products from the Control_Panel and restart zope). Authorization Problems while using manage_addFile()

We have imported a zope application from another machine. After starting the application we are unable to create a file using using the API manage_addFile(),which is strange because we are being able to use the API manage_delObjects() to delete an existing object. No more CR/LF support in PythonScripts with Zope 2.9.0

Hi all, I just upgraded my application from Zope 2.8.5 to Zope 2.9.0 and noticed that PythonScript doesn't support CR/LF line endings anymore (a la Windows). Converting my scripts to the Unix format fixes the problem. Is this new behaviour intented ? Regards, Patrick.

python product structure

hello all, I want to document the recommended structure of a product. I blogged about this at http://blog.delaguardia.com.mx/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=30&blogId… . I would like some comments on what I believe are the possible structures. First, here's more or less what everybody uses these days: - / MyProduct - | __init__.py - | config.py - | MyProduct.py - | utils.py - / docs - / zpt - / www - / tests I'm not sure whether to include a help directory anymore. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think many people use the Zope management help API. But if one is going to work with Zope 2.8 and use Five, there is also this possibility, which also has some common elements with Plone/CMF structures: - / MyProduct - | __init__.py - | MyProduct.py - | configure.zcml - | browser.py - | interfaces.py - | utils.py - / adapters - / docs - / skins - / tests Some people seem to use an interfaces directory instead of a file, and the same thing happens with browser.py. I still have to do some research about this and explain all the parts at least briefly, but I wanted to see if anyone wants to comment on this first. Thanks, Carlos de la Guardia

Can ZServer or ZPublisher be coaxed to return port 80 response..??

We have a new firewall and firewall guru... He wants the firewall to handle and route port 80/443 requests to pound instances running on port 8080 and 8443. Whereby pound routes said requests to appropriate back-end Zope servers (running on other high-end ports). Obviously - in this new scenario - Zope will return requests with the 8080 and 8443 ports attached to the response URL. He wants Zope to respond, in-kind, with URLs re-written to port 80 and 443. I have tried messing with Site Access (messing with SERVER_URL in the REQUEST) and can strip out the 8080 and replace with 80, but there are side effects and this just doesn't seem right. Is there a saner way, possibly within the zope.conf config items (like CGI) or some other deep "ZopeZen" magic that can address this or would it require some deep patching ..?? Certainly Apache (re-write) between pound and Zope would probably address this but that seems kinda silly... Yes - we had a very nice, clean, simple setup before with pound running on the low ports, however, there seems to be concerns (now) that pound is a security risk running on low ports in our DMZ. I recommended RootJail but it seems he is insisting on pushing this new scenario. Any suggestion(s) or points to docs greatly appreciated.. Long time Zope user.... TIA Eric

We are running Zope 2.6.x and I noticed yesterday that I could do the following: acl_users = container.acl_users user = acl_users.getUser('test_user') request.set('AUTHENTICATED_USER',user) print request.AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName() This isn't a huge deal since it doesn't seem to change the permissions available to the user. But many of our scripts rely on AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName() to return the actual logged in user. Is this addressed in later versions of Zope? Is there a better way to get the current user's user name? We allow untrusted developers on our Zope server and this may allow them to exploit certain systems. -Brian

Retrieve zope.conf path

Hello How could I retrieve the path to the config file used to start a running instance? I want to put other config stuff in the same directory, and I would like a safe way to obtain such directory. I could use INSTANCE_HOME/etc but since the config file name can be specified in the command line, it might not be there. Gabriel Genellina Softlab SRL
