Subclassing from Custom Python Classes
by Pete Kazmier 24 May '00

24 May '00

I need some guidance or pointers to more information. My Zope journey began last Thursday and I've been glued to zope.org ever since. I'm trying to understand the following paragraph from the Zope Developer's Guide from the section on "Subclassing from Custom Python Classes": >> You should also note that your subclass must obey the ZODB >> persistence rules, which basically state that mutable sub-objects >> should be treated immutably. For example, >> >> self.bird='parrot' # OK >> self.map['bird']='parrot' # NOT OK, will not trigger persistence >> machinery >> m=self.map >> m['bird']='parrot' >> self.map=m # OK, treats a mutable object immutably What are these "persistence rules" and how come the second example is ok? I thought in Python, when you assign "m = self.map" that m is simply pointing to the same object as self.map and that any changes to m affect self.map too? Does the "self.map = m" have any effect? Don't they point to the same object? I ask because I've already built my first product based on a custom python class I wrote (its a router object that has methods to query various snmp oids) based on a ZClass and I want to make sure that I am not doing anything wrong. In addition to the methods that query the oids, I store the results in an instance variable of my Python class so I can cache the information for a specified amount of time. Is this safe to do? Can I store these values in my Python instance (self.xxxx), not a ZClass property? Also, What happens if multiple people activate my query method, do I need to worry about them stomping over each other as the method writes the results to the instance variables? Is there any record locking of objects? Lastly, since I couldn't really find any pointers regarding a builtin Zope scheduler that is bug free, I need to write a small python script that I can place in a cron job to run every ten minutes to call the query methods of these objects so they update their cache instances. Is there a link on how to get a regular Python script access to the ZODB? Thanks in advance!! Zope is great!! Building ZPatterns
by Oliver Maunder 24 May '00

24 May '00

I'm trying to install ZPatterns 0.3.0 on an NT system and I've come across problems building the dynpersist C extension. Basically, I need the compile.py script to build a Visual C++ project to compile the extension, but the download site for compile.py is down, and I can't find a copy anywhere else. So... does anyone fancy sending me a copy of either compile.py, or a copy of the dynaccess extension precompiled for Win32? Thanks for your help Olly

RE: [Zope] newbie question: case sensitive folder problem
by Marcus Collins 24 May '00

You could try using Apache rewrite rules to convert all URL's to lower case, and then use only lower case names for your folders, documents and methods. As long as the case is consistent, one rewrite rule should cover everything. hth, -- Marcus > -----Original Message----- > From: Alexander N Gould [mailto:agould@student.umass.edu] > Sent: 24 May 2000 13:43 > To: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [Zope] newbie question: case sensitive folder problem > > > How can I make a folder on my site case - insensitive in > regards to access > from URLs. newbie question: case sensitive folder problem
by Alexander N Gould 24 May '00

24 May '00

How can I make a folder on my site case - insensitive in regards to access from URLs. If someone types http://mysite.com/bigfolder/ into their browser, I want it to take them to the Bigfolder, but right now, it produces a missing object error. Any hints? Sorry if this is a silly question - I'm just getting started here. I use zope with pcgi on Apache. -------------- Building highways to reduce traffic is like loosening your belt to reduce obesity

Discussion board with e-mail notification?
by Paul Browning 24 May '00

24 May '00

Hi. I need a quick fix. The Confera Product I'm using offers a "Notify me via email of responses to this message" check box if a MailHost object is present in the folder BUT doesn't actually work .... (for me anyway). Question 1: Anyone fixed this or got it working anyway? Question 2: Is there a Zope product that offers a discussion board with working e-mail notification? Many TIAs. Feedback Requested: Editor Applet for Zope?
by Heiko Stoermer 24 May '00

24 May '00

Hi all, I've been working with Zope for quite some time now, and one point that always slows me down is DTML or SQL source editing in the well-known wonderful textboxes. You all like them... My question: Do you like the idea of having a slim java-based editor applet instead of the textarea? (NO, not a 400k editor with WYSIWYG preview and an exotic scripting engine - it's supposed to be _very_ slim) Please give me feedback on this, because if the community wants such a thing, I might start working on it. Really dumb newbie question
by Andy Gates 24 May '00

24 May '00

This one is so dumb you'll be laughing, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to evaluate an IF. That's all. I have a variable called Action that's a string, and it can be null, "Add", "Update" etc. I try something along the lines of: <dtml-if action == "add"> blah </dtml-if> and whatever I try, I get "Invalid attribute name, "action", for tag <dtml-if Action=="add">" Assuming that I'm not just cursed by the Zope Gods, what am I doing wrong? Yeesh, I feel dumb. ---------------------- Andy Gates, Learning and Research Technology Andy.Gates(a)bristol.ac.uk - ICQ#74362415

Re: [Zope] Some newbie questions

Well, reading your mail tells me that you are looking at Zope for the first time today. :) You have the typical Zope newbie syndrom, but that will quickely change if you just spent a little bit more time. :) What can you do with REQUEST? RESPONSE? AUTHORIZED_USER? REQUEST - contains all cookies, form data and HTTP variables. You can see what it contains using <dtml-var REQUEST>. It acts like a python dictionary. RESPONSE - allows you to send non HTML HTTP responses, like setting cookies or sending redirects. >It looks like when you say <dtml-var "something"> it's plain >Python. What's the context? What do I need to do to call some function Yes, everything inside " " is a Python expression. It is evaluated and the result is then returned and displayed. >in a product class? What about a function in a class under some other >folder (ie. corresponding to some arbitrary URL)? > > From a product class function, is there a way to do a server redirect? I am confused. To better understand Zope, download all the guides and read them. When you are done, read them again. Then you should start playing around, trying simple tasks. Here is what happened to me: The first day I sat around and wrote 5 lines of code. I had no clue. The second day I wrote some samples and started on a Web site. The third day, I had a complete user management system, a message board and a news section implemented (back then I did not know about all the existing products for Zope.) >What should I use for managing users (seems to be GUF, LoginManager, maybe >others)? How about a threaded message board? There seem to be a number >of products planning not to continue from their current codebase. I use UserDB right now and it works fine for me. But I have read many times that GUF is good. >Can anyone explain ZClasses? Where's all the code? Is that the future of >Zope? There is a guide to ZClasses as well as a tutorial published by beehive. >Just hoping to find the road. Thanks a lot! Me too, but I am sure you will. Feel free to contact me any time. :) Regards, Stephan -- Stephan Richter CBU - Physics and Chemistry Web2k - Web Design/Development & Technical Project Management

Article: Zope - a Swiss Army Knife for the Web?
by Paul Browning 24 May '00

24 May '00

I'm a bit shy about this article amongst hardened Zopistas as it shows that I'm only just reaching the steep part of the learning cliff having wandered through the gentler foothills over the last year. The article was written at the end of 1999 and has yet to appear in print (and is dating rapidly). So I'm casting etiquette aside and broadcasting its whereabouts generally. It will not give Zopistas any new insights but it might help them in the cause of persuading others on board (which was my motivation for writing the article in the first place).
