Zope SQL Database Connection
by joel grimes 19 May '00

19 May '00

<Beginner Question> I'm trying to add a database connection to a site (my first one). I tried adding a SQL Method and am told I need to add a Zope Database Connection. I can't find that in the list of available objects. Can someone direct me to a resource that explains how? It's not mentioned in the quick start guide. I'll be using an Access or SQL Server Database. Oh yeah...and what the heck is a Z Gadfly Database Connection? Thanks, Joel Grimes joelgrimes(a)hotmail.com ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

ZPygreSQLDA Help
by Kenny Smit 19 May '00

I am running zope 2.1.6 and Postgres 6.5.3 on Free BSD 4 and attempting to get these to two working together with little luck. After a couple of changes to the make file I was able to create the _pgmodule.so file. I moved this file up one directory as the directions instructed. However even after doing all of this it is still showing in control panel as a broken product. I am running this on a Free BSD 4 machine. I currently have this product working fine on our linux box. Thinking that the problem may be with owner ship I have made sure that it is owned by nobody and group ownership is soul (my personal username). It seems that the .so file is correct as I can import _pg in python without a problem. I am not sure how helpful the message below will be to you but I included it in hopes it may make more sense to you :). Traceback (innermost last): File "/usr/zope/lib/python/OFS/Application.py", line 387, in import_products product=__import__(pname, global_dict, global_dict, silly) File "/usr/zope/lib/python/Products/ZPyGreSQLDA/__init__.py", line 89, in ? import sys, os, Globals, DA File "/usr/zope/lib/python/Products/ZPyGreSQLDA/DA.py", line 91, in ? from db import DB File "/usr/zope/lib/python/Products/ZPyGreSQLDA/db.py", line 89, in ? import _pg, regex, sys, types ImportError: /usr/zope/lib/python/Products/ZPyGreSQLDA/_pgmodule.so: ELF file ABI version invalid. I would like to thank you in advance for your help. Representing rows from a ZSQL method
by Juan Carlos Coruña 19 May '00

19 May '00

Hi all! I must manage a lot of information coming from a database and represent it on the web. For example: -Displaying an order on the web with the order header (consisting of the client name, address, ZIP, etc.) and the order lines with the products to purchase. -Displaying a list of invoices between two dates with several columns (Invoice date, amount, VAT, invoice number, etc.). -Displaying a price list of our products with several columns (reference, description, price, weight, etc.) and grouping the products by different criteria. For example inserting a row with the brandname of the next group of products or inserting a row of the product type. Is there a product for zope to acomplish this?

Nesting ZClasses
by David Holden 19 May '00

19 May '00

Hi, I'm working throw the ZDevelopers guide, and want to try using nested ZClasses, e.g. I have a product CDcollection, which contains a ZClass ZCDcollection, I want ZCDcollection to contain instances of a sub class ZCDinformation (for individual CDs). According to the Doc's I should make the top class "ZCDcollection" a sub class of object manager and then create the subclass "ZCDinformation" in the methods tab of the ZCDcollection class. The docs say that Zope should then make this available in the subobjects tab of "ZCDcollection" but it doesn't. The only way I can get the ZCDinformation class avialable in the subobjects tab of the ZCDcollection class is if I make the ZCDinformation class at the same level as the ZCDcollection class, i.e. under product/CDcollection folder. in summary Products/CDcollection/ZCDcollection Products/CDcollection/ZCDinformation makes ZCDinformation avialable to the ZCDcollection subobjects tab but Products/CDcollection/ZCDcollection/ZCDinformation does not? Can any one explain this? thanks in advance, Dave.

a somewhat notable date (for me)

just thought people might be interested - this week, www.ekno.lonelyplanet.com had it's first birthday, and in the same week, it was migrated to our new Zope2 based platform (dingdong the zope1 is dead). FWIW, the following sites are all running off the same Zope installation: www.ekno.lonelyplanet.com www.ekit.com www.hiayh.ekit.com and a bunch of others that I can't remember. Zope rocks. But you knew that already. Anthony

Re: [Zope] gotcha for zope on solaris2.7 - make sure you use pthreads.
by Anthony Baxter 19 May '00

19 May '00

Let's see: network lookups would fail, sometimes, strangely, signals would be delivered to _all_ children (not just the one that had installed a signal handler) -- so if you had an external method that popen'd another program, when the SIGCHLD came in, it would kill the mainloop. The signals were the really shocking problem. Welcome Aboard!!!
by Rob Page 19 May '00

19 May '00

Hello everybody! Please join me in welcoming Ethan Fremen to the Digital Creations team!! Ethan is in the process of relocating and should be joining us in our Virgia offices in the very near future. Welcome Ethan! >From Ethan's man page """ When I was twelve years old, I swore a mighty oath to myself that I'd get off this ball of rock before I died- and I even had some harebrained schemes to do so, probably inspired by to much R. A. Heinlein. As I got a little older, I realized that it wouldn't do to start spreading humanity about the solar system without significant changes in the way we interact with each other, the way we work together, and the way we deal with conflict. This led me to an exploration of the basic issues, like why are we here, why am I here, what am I anyway, what is the stuff that existence is of, and other abstract playthings. I've come to some conclusions, but the most important of these is that I contend that existence is communication. Of course, I had already nurtured a love affair with computers, from my original TI-99/4a (with voice synthesis!) to the Original Macintosh, that had flowered into a typographic and guerilla publishing bent. Meeting the love of my life online, I moved to Portugal to be with her. The sysadmin at the place I worked said "hey, we've got this big printer, print what you like"- and so, over two thousand pages of printed standards later, I was a web machine. Zope was a natural: it mapped to my thinking better than any other web tools I've ever encountered. After I built one site with Zope, I was determined to use it to my own ends- but there was no Zope hosting provider to meet my needs: Thus, imeme.net was born. Life has taught me that communication and community are the two most important things I can possibly be working on. As a Zopista Community Liason, I get to focus full time on helping our community grow and thrive. I was born in Washington, D.C., but moved away at 6 months of age. Working with Digital Creations brings me back full circle: A new beginning that incorporates all I've learned. gotcha for zope on solaris2.7 - make sure you use pthreads.
by Anthony Baxter 19 May '00

19 May '00

If you're running a Zope on Solaris2.7 and you're seeing strange behaviour, make sure that your python executable's been built and linked with pthreads, not solaris threads. I've just had a horrible time figuring out why I was seeing very strange behaviour on Solaris until I noticed this. ldd `which python` should show /usr/lib/libpthread.so, NOT /usr/lib/libthread.so.
