Zope hanging: internal ZODB error?
by Darran Edmundson 24 Mar '00

I recently took the site I have been developing online and have been beta testing with several users. I have a problem which is preventing a user from viewing his home page; any attempt I make to isolate the problem hangs Zope, stops anyone accessing my site, and requires a forced unix kill. The user's page is: http://rsphysse.anu.edu.au/optics/people/jdl124 Users are implemented as a Person ZClass. One of their contained objects is a PublicationFolder ZClass, itself a container class for Journal ZClass instances. So above: optics (folder) people (folder) jdl124 (Person) publications (PublicationFolder) article1 (Journal) article2 (Journal) . . article69 (Journal) jdl124's home page is dying when it tries to iterate over the results from a search of the ZCatalog publicationCatalog. error with ptk
by Omar RABHI 24 Mar '00

I began to download and to install PTK's last version recently. I installed the product by following procedure described in the file " Read Me ", and I so obtained three new elements in the section products. But when I try to create a new element "Portal", Zope sends back me an error. I search so the details of the installed products and I notice that in the part " DemoPortal " certain elements are broken: It is a question of: . " DemoPortal / Portal " . " DemoPortal / PortalWizard " . " DemoPortal / Wizard " In fact they are all the DemoPortal's ZClass which are lacking. Can it involve a conflict with another product? Is it necessary to settle PTK on Zope's clean version? I work with: Zope version: Zope 2.1.2 (binary release, python 1.5.2 , win32-x86) on Win NT4 / sp4, as well as with Zope 2.1.4 on Linux Mandrake 7.0. (on whom I did not test PTK because it is my working environment, and I do not wish to pollute it). Thank you for advices. I intervene only rarely. What is well , it is that major subjects and basic questions were approached in depth, repeatedly, what allows to avoid resting the same questions. By getting back this information, the people of the ZDP make a formidable job. That has the taste of object oriented thinking... dtml-with in a pythonMethod?
by Darran Edmundson 24 Mar '00

24 Mar '00

I have a container ZClass Person. Person has a (string) property CurrentPosition which gives the id of a ZClass instance contained in Person. Example: DarranEdmundson (Person) bsc_degree (Degree) phd_degree (Degree) fellow (Academic) fujitsu (employment) vizlab (employment) where DarranEdmundson.CurrentPosition = "vizlab" I am having problems accessing the CurrentPosition object in a pythonMethod. list = [] for person in self.objectValues('Person'): position = _.getitem(person.CurrentPosition) list.append(person.LastName, position.anyProperty)) I can do it in DTML via <dtml-in "objectValues('Person')"> <dtml-with "_.getitem(CurrentPosition)"> <dtml-var LastName> <dtml-var anyProperty> </dtml-with> </dtml-in> I think the question really comes down to: how does one achieve <dtml-with name> in a pythonMethod? Cheers, Darran.

ZEO app architecture options
by Jimmie Houchin 24 Mar '00

24 Mar '00

Hello, In light of ZEO becoming open source, I'm still extremely excited, I want to revisit some questions I threw out in a previous thread about Zope's scalability. Can I architect a website like this using different Zope Storage Servers for the various directories or 'would be' tables in an RDBMS? Yes, I understand the impact of the OS filesystem concerning ZODB size. Say for example I have a large database. Like this: ZAuto ZAuto/parts/ ZAuto/manufacturers/ ZAuto/distributors/ ZAuto/distributors/...(orders, address, preferences, etc.) ZAuto/resellers/...(orders, address, preferences, etc.) ... Let's say that ZAuto/parts is a 5+gb directory which is reasonably stable updated monthly. ZAuto/manufacturers isn't as large but is also stable with periodic updates. ZAuto/distributors and ZAuto/resellers are much more dynamic with changes and additions. ZAuto/parts could be optimized for search performance. It only needs to be backed up periodically when bulk changes are made. It will relatively almost never need packed. It could sit on it's own drive, own machine, etc. It would be nice to be able to partition the database into stable/volatile files. Since the stable partition is also the largest, it seems this would also help performance of the more dynamic section. Also, when comments are made about Zope's ZODB or ZSS not being appropriate for heavy write apps, does this refer to apps doing "updates" on objects or doing "inserts" or both using SQL terminology? Would structuring an app like above help in write situations? I am trying to determine the desirability or necessity of an RDBMS for my idea. I like keeping it in Zope if reasonable and ZEO can definitely help. If need be I'll go to an RDBMS for certain data. Thanks for any help or clues. Jimmie Houchin

Catalog search merges
by R. David Murray 24 Mar '00

24 Mar '00

OK, so I read the Advanced Catalog Search HowTo, and I am left with a couple of questions. I'm concerned here with "or"ing the searches on two fields. The first question is, once I do the OR is the result (which may be close to a thousand records) cached? Otherwise I don't think this is going to work. Even if it is cached, I'm thinking it may not work. Is there any way to do an OR without loading both result sets into memory? The other question is, when I do the OR, how do I reduce the composed list to just unique records? The HowTo seems to just do a sequence join, which would leave me with duplicated records for those items that matched on both search columns. --RDM

sinde dtml does not provide a " for loop " structure how can I generate form fields equivalent to the number of catalog items somebody has choosen i.e <form> <for noOfTimes> <input type="text" name= ... </for> </form> The dtml-in tag only accepts lists and such -- ########################## necessity is the mother of invention ##########################

How do I pass parms past a redirect?
by Garry Hodgson 23 Mar '00

23 Mar '00

i'm building an app that requires me to connect to another server in the company to do employee authentication. one connects to that site, passing a return URL. it verifies the employee, sets a cookie, and redirects to the URL you gave it. so, in a document i want to protect, say, ChangePerson.dtml, i've got something like: <dtml-if "REQUEST.cookies.has_key( 'attESSec' )"> ...regular actions for the page... <dtml-call "RESPONSE.expireCookie( 'attESSec' )"> <dtml-else> Missing attESSec cookie! <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect( 'http://othersite/cgi-bin/authenticate?retURL=http://mysite:8080/ChangePerso…' )"> </dtml-if> note that the URL i redirect to expects two parameters, retURL says where to return, and sysName is an application name given when i registered to use their services. so far, so good. the problem is, my document expects to be called with some parameters passed, like: <a href=ChangePerson?hrid=1234567&name=garry>Change</a> now, i can't encode these parameters in the retURL i pass the other site, as i get a "malformed syntax" error. so, my question is, how do i make this information available to my script on the return? do i set a variable in the container? set a cookie? or is there some better way? to broaden a bit, how does one pass information around in general? so far, i see several methods, for calling: External Method: piece of cake. real live arglists, like god intended. DMTL Doc from form: form variables, mixing hidden vars in for other stuff. HTML links: cgi-style syntax, leads to ugly URLs. is this the right way to do things, or am i missing something? -- Garry Hodgson Every night garry(a)sage.att.com a child is born Software Innovation Services is a Holy Night. xmlrpc authentication woes
by Bill Anderson 23 Mar '00

23 Mar '00

First, let me say I have patched my xmlrpclib.py to support authentication; that isn't the problem. Overview: I have a folder, 'Administration', which requires manager login to access. In this folder is a subfolder called 'MachineTracker'. In this folder is a collection of ZSQl Methods, DTML Methods, and DTML Documents. What I want to do is to connect to the server via XML-RPC, and make use of the ZSQL Method for inserting data into the database. Problem: When attempting this from python in XML-RPC, I get a 401 Unauthorized error. I can access the folder, and other methods, such as index_html() and objectIds() with no authentication issues. Any ideas? (please cc me here, this isn't my subscribed address) TIA, Bill -- Bill Anderson Linux/Unix Administrator, Security Analyst ESBU (ARC) bill_anderson(a)boi.hp.com My opinions are just that; _my_ opinions.
