Zope and proxy servers
by Alexander Limi 01 Feb '00

Zopistas, I recently stumbled over a document that shows how to run ZServer via mod_proxy in Apache(1). Link to the document at the bottom(2). So I thought this might be the ideal solution for us, as we don't need any of the standard web-server functions, as the whole site is made in Zope. (with a turnaround time like no other project I've ever attempted :) So, if we set up the Squid(3) proxy/webcache to forward all requests to port 8080 to port 80, is there anything in particular to watch out for? If I understand the documentation correctly, this will both be the fastest solution (eliminating FastCGI/PCGI and the Zope.cgi issue entirely), and simultaneously allow us to run other Apache sites on the box (for other domains), therefore also being the most flexible solution from our standpoint. Please comment if I'm right or wrong on this. Regards, Alexander Limi http://mp3.no PS: please CC this to me if you answer, because of some stupid filtering done on our univerity network, we can't use our MXs anymore, and we haven't got around to setting up a new mailinglist solution yet. Yeah, procmail, I know :) (1) http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_zserver/ (2) Yeah, I know, to much time on alt.sysadmin.recovery. Now where did I put that LART... Backup Question
by Nick Henderson 01 Feb '00

01 Feb '00

If I have a Zope site that uses a python product and the ZODB for the data storage, how to I make backups of the data? Can I just copy the data.fs? Or, should I build some other backup thing into my product? Thanks, Nick Henderson

Iterating over items in a folder.

Hello everyone! This time, I do not have a bug to report, either real or imagined. :-) I am just stumped with regards to how I should do something. It is actually quite simple: I am trying to do what the tree tag is doing. But the tag is smarter than me, and I cannot find its source... :-( Quite the coder I am, eh? :-) I have a folder called DWSujets and want to iterate in it with <dtml-in DWSujets>. DWSujets contains folders (the sections) which can contain other folders (none do currently). But I get a TypeError whenever I try to do that... (The traceback follows.) I hope someone can tell me in what way I am being an idiot. Thank you very much for your time. Cheers! Jérôme Loisel PS: Has anyone figured out what my "restarting Zope" problems were all about? Re: [Zope] cookie problem

The only method I have found so far is to string.replace >all >'\012' with "\\012". I don't understand. You should use quote_plus() before setting the cookie, and unquote_plus() after retrieving the cookie. Steps: (1) You have a pickled object. (2) You use quote_plus() to transform the pickled object's string to another string. (3) You set the cookie with RESPONSE.setCookie() (4) You can now retrieve the cookie by using REQUEST.cookies['myCookieName'] (5) You unpickle the object. If your steps are different from the above, then I don't know what you are doing. :) A '\012' in the pickled object's string will be mapped to '%0a', which is perfectly fine to be stored as a cookie. Perhaps your problem is that you are not reading/writing your pickled file by using the binary tag as in 'rb' or 'wb'. myFile = open('myFileName', 'rb') myPickledString = myFile.read() myFile.close() .... myFile = open('myFileName', 'wb') myPickledString = urllib.unquote_plus( REQUEST.cookies['myCookieName']) myFile.write(myPickledString) myFile.close() Anyway, please outline your steps so I can take a look at why it isn't working for you. regards, Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

python question/ LDAPAdapter product bug
by Dennis Moore 31 Jan '00

31 Jan '00

We discovered a problem with the LDAP Adapter product. It seems that because of this line: name,password=tuple(string.split(decodestring(string.split(auth)[-1]), ':')) we get a ValueError (unpack tuple of wrong size) when the password contains a colon (:). does anyone know of a workaround for this? -- pity this busy monster, manunkind, | Dennis Moore | Sarah not. Combining ZCatalog Search Results
by Andrew Lahser 31 Jan '00

31 Jan '00

I have a ZCatalog that is keeping track of several properties, for example, title, caption, description, and keywords. I want to provide a simple search interface that checks all of these properties, but not certain other properties, such as tech_details, datestamp, which are also indexed. Presently I am searching on each of the properties individually, and then combining the results. Yet, sometimes the search term appears in multiple properties, which means that a single object can be found more than once. Is there a better way to do this? Did I describe the situtation well? Here is the submit form. <form action="summary_search" method="get"> <input name="AnyText" width=20 value=""><br> <input type="SUBMIT" name="SUBMIT" value="Find"> </form> Here is the DTML I have so far. <dtml-let caption_search="searchResults(caption=AnyText)" description_search="searchResults(description=AnyText)" title_search="searchResults(title=AnyText)" keywords_search="searchResults(keywords=AnyText)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('summary_results', caption_search[:_.len(caption_search)] + description_search[:_.len(description_search)] + title_search[:_.len(title_search)] + keywords_search[:_.len(keywords_search)]"> Any help would be appreciated. RE: [Zope] WebDAV client for MacOS (and question)

Does > anyone know whether there is something I need to set up in > Zope to allow it > to send the actual method code (I'm running Zope 2.1.2)? This is a problem for all DAV servers that deal with dynamic content :( The DAV working group has been surprisingly resistant to widening their scope to cover dynamic content - surprising to me, at least, given the growing ubiquity of .asp, php, dtml, etc. Apparently MS decided to stop beating their head against this and came up with their own magic header that lets their (win2K/ exchange) DAV server know that you want the _unprocessed_ content. I suspect that in lieu of an "official" solution, this will catch on. Once there are clients that know about this, I expect we will support it in Zope as well. Recommendations: Learning to swim, ZopeStyle...
by addyd＠unk.edu 31 Jan '00

31 Jan '00

Hi all, <background> Relative newbie to Linux/web systems administration. Running 3 Mac web servers and 2 LinuxPPC Mac Workgroup Servers for a small university. The newest LinuxPPC server I set up myself. Been looking for a possible solution to the updating of the university web site that would allow people to change their content without having to teach them all HTML issues. Like the idea of separating the presentation from the content with authorization. Like Open Source philosophy. Found Zope (and from it found Python). Python looks pretty cool and even understandable by mere mortals (at least 40 year old mere mortals who have only learned "structured programming" [on Turbo Pascal] within the last year). Last Friday I figured out how to update my Python 1.5.1 to 1.5.2 using RPM. Also, couldn't find a LinuxPPC RPM of Zope 2.1.2, so got some instructions on making one from the src. Did it and installed it (I think). </background> <tendencies> My problem is that my desire to do what's "right" often (usually) runs ahead of my ability to actually understand what I am getting into. (tendencies.examples.mod_perl: my Apache 1.3.9 is running mod_perl 1.21 but the complicated script I downloaded to run on it does funny things under Apache:Registry that I can only perceive through a heavy mist. But, I digress...) </tendencies> <question> How do you experienced Python/Zope sages recommend someone like me scale the foothill of the proverbial learning curve? Are you in favor of heaving me into deep end of the pool with no life preserver to thrash about until I sink or swim...or are there some nice Red Cross lessons given by leggy bronzed blonds to guide me along a progressive path of ever-increasing confidences? (Jeez, I musta forgot to take my afternoon Ritalin!) I've read the excellent HowTo: by anser on "Using Apache with ZServer (not Zope.cgi)" http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_server and from what I've read, it sounds like the best of all worlds performance-wise. I think I even understand everything he is saying to do. (I don't think I have mod_proxy compiled in, but that's fixable). Problem is, I haven't even fired up Zope yet and wonder if I should try it some simpler way first, before getting into all of that. Is it necessary for me to delve into Python before learning Zope's ropes? Opinions/recommendations, anyone? </question> Please cc me when replying to the list...I'm on digest mode. Many thanks!
