Submitting a patch for a DA?
by Timothy Grant 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

Hi, Never thought I would get the privilege of doing this... As some of you may have seen, I have been requesting help for the PostgreSQL DA, I didn't get any help, so I finally figured out that maybe no one new the answer. I went digging through the DA and think I have solved my problem. Now I have a two part question: 1. How do I submit a patch (I've never done it before)? 2. To whom do I submit the patch? Thanks. -- Stand Fast, tjg. Zope + PostgreSQL + BLOBS, how?
by Steen Suder 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

Is it possible to store, say, staff pictures in PostgreSQL and then show them on a webpage served by Zope? Like: PostgreSQL -> DA -> Zope -> webpage If it is possible; can someone give me a few guidelines or hints on how it is done? I've never worked with BLOBs, but have done lot of standard SQL stuff, also with Zope. -- Best regards / Mvh., Steen Suder, sysadm kollegie6400.dk -|- OpenSource --- Sign of the time Scan-Aqua ADVARSEL WARNING http://www.uk.k64.dk/sfs/Scan-Aqua/

Using proxypass for virtual servers + root install
by M. Oesterwinter 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

I tried posting a similar post before on egroups.com, but it didn't seem to work, as I can't find my post anywhere. I have been trying endlessly to use Zope with virtual domains with no luck. I started out with the VirtualHostFolder product by Adam Feuer and tried to install it with version 2.2.x of zope, but there is a patch script for zope that is made for version 2.0.x, and it didn't seem to work. I cantacted Adam about the product, and he said that Michel Pelletier was working on a new similar product, and he was waiting for the release of that product. Does anyone have any info on this project? Next, I tried using the apache+zope+ssl howto that was recently put out, and that didn't work (I think because of a screw up in my IP alias settings), so I scraped that install. Most recently, I spent half a day trying to use the ProxyPass method, but for some reason, I can't seem to get it to work correctly. I believe I have all the settings correct (I followed the howto precisely, with the exception that I took the / off the end of the URL in SiteRoot because I was getting a bunch of pages with two /s in the middle. Either way, it didn't work with the / at the end either. I can load the page, but it comes up unusably slow. I am using a squishdot site to test. It is located at http://www.capitaltips.com. If I access zope directly (not using SiteRoot), performance is fine. As soon as I add siteroot, and try to contact by the VirtualHost, it turns unusable (even the admin screens for that directory. I have a feeling that it is apache, which I am running on a different server, but I have no idea what the problem is. Anyways, here is my configuration in case anyone cares: Zope box: Celeron 366 with 128MB RAM Mandrake 6.1 - no apache installed IP 204.203.69.136 Port 8080 Zope: Installed from SRC - newest version capitaltips test site: /testdot Apache box: Pentium 133 with 96MB RAM Mandrake 6.1 - Apache 1.3.9 installed from RPM IP 204.203.69.132 IP alias 204.203.69.133-135 vhost0.conf on Apache box: (defualt httpd.conf unless changed by linuxconf) <VirtualHost 204.203.69.134> ServerName www.capitaltips.com ServerAdmin admin(a)capitaltips.com ProxyPass / http://204.203.69.136:8080/testdot/ ProxyPassReverse / http://204.203.69.136:8080/testdot/ ProxyPass /misc_ http://204.203.69.136:8080/misc_ ProxyPass /p_ http://204.203.69.136:8080/p_ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 204.203.69.133> ServerName www.pfgllc.com ServerAdmin admin(a)pfgllc.com ProxyPass / http://204.203.69.136:8080/pfgllc/ ProxyPassReverse / http://204.203.69.136:8080/pfgllc/ ProxyPass /misc_ http://204.203.69.136:8080/misc_ ProxyPass /p_ http://204.203.69.136:8080/p_ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 204.203.69.135> ServerName www.financeXpert.com ServerAdmin admin(a)financeXpert.com ProxyPass / http://204.203.69.136:8080/financexpert/ ProxyPassReverse / http://204.203.69.136:8080/financexpert/ ProxyPass /misc_ http://204.203.69.136:8080/misc_ ProxyPass /p_ http://204.203.69.136:8080/p_ </VirtualHost> If anyone can give me a clue as to what the problem is, I would greatly appreciate it. I have also been having one little problem with IP aliases. I was unable to do assign IP aliases with linuxconf, so I tried to use netcnf, which allows me to make the aliases, however I check start at boot, but they don't start at boot (and yes, I have saved the configuration). I have to manually go in and ifup eth0:0, eth0:1, etc. One more issue: I have heard all this talk about whether zope should be installed with root. What I have been doing is installing with root and then 'chown -R nobody:nobody' the zope root directory. Is there any problem with this? I also typically do this to the /home/httpd directory. Is this okay to do? Is there any problem with assigning nobody a password that way I don't have to log into root and 'su nobody' all the time? It is getting time for me to get up, and I haven't gone to bed yet! Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. - Marcus

request for data sets.
by Anthony Baxter 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

I'm looking for a largish data-set I can use for playing with in some query stuff I'm fiddling with. I know at one point PaulE said he had the IMDB database loaded into zope - I've not been able to find this on the web. Can anyone suggest a useful dataset? Preferably it would have: a number of different types of objects lots of cross-references between the objects various attributes for searching/sorting... ta, Anthony

Installing Zope as nonroot user (was: Zope-dev ZFormulator review...)
by Chris McDonough 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

(moved from zope-dev) Well, let's think about this... If I untar a source Zope from Zope.org into, for instance, /home/mcdonc/Zope while logged in as a nonroot user ("mcdonc"), and run "python w_pcgi.py" on the source as the same user, I'll get a working Zope via ZServer that runs under the "mcdonc" account. So far so good, I can talk to Zope running as "mcdonc" on 8080 if I want to via ZServer. Then let's say I want to make PCGI work so that we can serve Zope content via Apache. We'll assume I configure Apache via httpd.conf's User and Group directives to run as "mcdonc" and configure it to listen on port 80 via the Port directive. I'll then set up my httpd.conf rewrite rules to point to a symlink of the PCGI shellfile at /home/mcdonc/Zope/Zope.cgi in my Apache's cgi-bin directory. We'll always need to start Apache as root if it listens on port 80. Apache will spawn off several nonroot-owned processes which serve requests that run under "mcdonc" in this case. Apache's nonroot server processes should be able to read the Zope.cgi file as they're all running as "mcdonc", and "mcdonc" owns the Zope.cgi file. So far so good. So I start Apache as root via apachectl start. I do a ps -aux to see who Apache is running as, and I have five httpd processes that show the user "mcdonc" as owner and one httpd process that shows the user "root" as owner (the "manager" process). I also see that Zope's two processes are running as "mcdonc". When I visit http://127.0.0.1/Zope/manage, I am able to log in as superuser, etc. So we're successful. I've been doing this as I've been writing it to be 100% sure that this is the case... So, while it seems advisable to untar Zope as a nonroot user (so your files don't end up getting owned by one of the Pelletier clan -- pretty funny!), I don't think it's a requirement to install Zope (via "python w_pcgi.py") as root if you want to serve Zope content from Apache using PCGI. I've done the equivalent under Netscape Enterprise Server, too, and it works. I haven't set up Zope using FastCGI, so I have to claim utter ignorance there. Re: new howto: choosing sql vs ZODB.

If you use the ZODB, you automatically have a platform-independent way of indexing a full text database by using ZCatalog. If you use a ZCatalog-aware object, it automatically can index/reindex/unindex itself too. If you choose to use an SQL RDBMS , you don't have a platform-independent way of creating a full text search index (i.e. each RDBMS may or may not have the capability to index a LONG VARCHARS type and each one that can may do it in a different way). In fact, this is one of the major reasons why I've chosen to use the ZODB in Squishdot, along with the fact that the messages dont get updated that often anyway (in accordance with point no. 1 on your how-to). SiteSummary Import Fails

I am trying to import the Site Summary product into a fresh Zope installation, but when I hit the import button I get the following traceback. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? ! Re: [Zope] Security
by Gregor 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

Of course, my previous post about fixing the Factory should not be taken to mean that I actually understand why it works now. In fact, quite the opposite. Emboldened by this small step forward, I tried creating a new type of ThingProduct, with more or less the same results as before: Can't add the new type of Thing to the Place. This time, the factory isn't broke (which was probably something I did trying to fix the original problem). Auuuughhhhh! ^_^ I really think the following page is doing more to confuse me than to help me ;-) http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Guides/ZDG-HTML/ZDG.6.3.7.html

Security
by Gregor 09 Jan '00

09 Jan '00

After over a week, I'm obviously still not understanding something about Zope security. Every time I think I've got it, something fails to work as I expect. What I am trying to do (currently) is this: Create a really simple member folder thingy (Place) that lets a person log in and create generic DTML documents, as well as custom documents (Thing), in their space. As I understand it, the basic steps to do this are: 1. Create a new product (PlaceProduct). Inside that, create a Z Class (PlaceClass) with a meta-type "Place". The Z Class has a base class of "Object Manager", since I want it to hold stuff. Set up a "Security" == "manage_access" view inside PlaceClass so I can assign my role later. 2. Back to the Product list, create another new product (ThingProduct). Inside that, create a Z class (ThingClass) with a meta-type "Thing". This has some properties on it, but that is not important for the problem at hand. 3. Inside PlaceClass, set the subobjects to include "DTML Documents", "DTML Methods", and "Thing". 4. At the top-level of Zope, create a new role called "Contrib". Give it these permissions (let me know if any are unnecessary): Access Contents Information Add Documents, Images, and Files **Add Things** Change DTML Documents Change DTML Methods Delete Objects Manage Properties View View Management Screens ** emphasized 5. Set up a user at the top level, but assign it no roles there 6. Elsewhere in the hierarchy, create a "Place". Inside this, I'll have to give the user a local role of "Contrib". Now, as I understand it, the user should be able to enter his username/password to use the management interface for that Place, and should be able to add DTML Documents, DTML Methods, and Things there, delete them, edit their properties, etc. Unfortunately, what actually happens is that the user can create and manipulate DTML Documents and Methods just fine. When the user tries to create a Thing, a new password dialog pops up and refuses to accept the user's name/password. Have I missed a step somewhere, am I just completely off-base about the whole idea, or is something broken? On a completely unrelated topic, does ZServer seem to intermittently vapor lock for anyone besides me? I use the binary installation on Win98, and both 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 have done this. I can't identify anything in particular that causes it. Sometimes I'll just come back to the browser that I was tinkering in (after working on something else for an extended period), try to do something in the management interface, and get no response. Sometimes it'll happen when clicking a link (any link) on the site itself. When this happens I have to kill the DOS window that is running the server, then restart Zope. (I'm not running under Apache or anything like that; just running the start.bat file and using localhost while I learn the program.) - Gregor

XML_RPC client for internet explorer
by Johan Carlsson 09 Jan '00

I've "compiled" an XMLRPC client (from David Carter-Tod's XML-RPC Client and Server for ASP) that seems to be working with Zope, but it has not been tested (patches and bug rapports are welcome). http://www.zope.org/Members/johanc/ZIE/xmlrpc_client David Carter-Tod's XML-RPC Client and Server for ASP (the client has a bug for working with Zope, simply add [objXML.setRequestHeader "content-type", "text/xml"] before the [objXML.send(requestText)] in [xmlRPC] you be alright.) http://www.wc.cc.va.us/dtod/XMLRPC/ Regards, Johan Carlsson
