calling ZSQL "in place"
by Timothy Wilson 05 Jan '00

Hi everyone, I'd like to print the total number of records in a database table and print that number on my page. My ZSQL method looks like: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM foo_table The method returns the correct number when I test it. I'd like to print the following: There are [insert SQL result here] records in the database. Using <dtml-call "foo_sql(REQUEST)"> doesn't work. Ideas? BTW, I've very impressed with the SQL tools that Zope has. Obviously, I'm new to using SQL with Zope, but the Z Search Interface Wizard was an absolute God-send. I'd be nowhere near as far along as I am without it. Now if I could just find my Zen... :-) -Tim -- Timothy Wilson | "The faster you | Check out: Henry Sibley H.S. | go, the shorter | http://slashdot.org/ W. RE: UPDATE: Apache + ZServer complete solution... will it work with SSL?
by Clarence T. Pate 05 Jan '00

I like the mod_proxy solution better than pcgi or fast_cgi, but I need to authenticate users with X.509 certificates. Mod_ssl will allow Apache to pass through the certificate information to zope using zope.cgi (I believe this works, but I have not tested it yet). "SSLOption ExportCertData" will create environment variables for use by cgi/ssi scripts. Does anyone know if mod_proxy will also pass these environment variables to zope? Thanks, Clarence T. Pate

Sure - if nowhere else, NotMail2 certainly does email (it's a Zope-based mail user agent.) I've also got a SendMailTask in my workflow code. When it's preconditions are true, it sends a piece of email to the specified person (or to the email address(es) in whatever variable - it's just DTML) and then automatically goes to state 'complete'. Help! Import Problem
by Michael Fox 05 Jan '00

Hello, I am currently trying to import a Zope export from the same Zope Site when I receive the following message: Type Exists The permission Add FlexQuestions is already defined. It doesn't seem to import at all. Has anyone else encountered this error? Help is much appreciated. Regards, Michael Fox

What does "this()" return?
by Hung Jung Lu 05 Jan '00

05 Jan '00

Hi, The "this()" method returns the object itself. Or at least that's what it's supposed to do. But if I have a folder named "myFolder" inside which I have a DTML method named "myMethod" consisting of the following lines: <dtml-if "this() == myFolder"> Hallo <dtml-else> Bye-Bye </dtml-if> The result is always Bye-Bye, when viewing myMethod. So the "this()" method is tricky. In the same league is the "id()" method, which is also tricky. And often I have to use "_['id']" to get what I want. The following works: <dtml-if "this().id == myFolder.id"> Hallo <dtml-else> Bye-Bye </dtml-if> However, this does not work: <dtml-if "this.id == myFolder.id"> Hallo <dtml-else> Bye-Bye </dtml-if> All these weird behaviors of "this()" and "id()" are sending my head spinning. When to use parenthesis, when not to use parenthesis, when to use "_['id']", when you can use ".", when you can't use ".", argghhhh.... Is there any doc on "this()" or "id()"? Aside from the "How-to..." docs, shouldn't we start compiling "Zope Pitfalls" or "Zope Gotchas" doc series? Sometimes learning a new software is not so much what you know to do, but what you know NOT TO DO. Also, is there any documentation on calling DTML methods with arguments? I know you can do it with "myMethod(_.None, _, arg1=val1, arg2=val2, ...)", but I'd like to know what the role of _.None is. (I know _ is the namespace...), that is, if I replace it with something like "myMethod(coolDude, _, ...)" what sort of catastrophe might happen. :) regards, Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Has this been done?
by Jack Ungerleider 05 Jan '00

I am new to Zope (though I did experiment with Bobo a while back.) and being an ex-Notes programmer see some definite possibilities for Zope on the low end where Notes/Domino just is too costly. That said one of the core functions of Notes is messaging. I have look through all the sites I can find and all the docs that are obvious and can't find anything in the way of one-to-one (e-mail) messaging being done within the Zope environment. Has this been done? If so where can I find the code? If not do people think I'm barking up the wrong tree with this? Or does it sound interesting? My intent is to facilitate form based workflow applications that I think Zope (possibly with some XML) can do well. I appreciate the activity of this group. It helps to know there are a lot of people out there working on this platform. Thanks in advance for any assistance and/or ideas. -- Jack Ungerleider The Ungerleider Group Creative Solutions for Cooperative Computing jack(a)jacku.com www.jacku.com

Can anyone recommend good free or $$ tools for browsing the zope log? Is z2.log the only place that things are logged? Thanks, John

rewrite and access
by Guy Davis 05 Jan '00

05 Jan '00

I am repeating my earlier question as an answer (or lack thereof) will likely determine whether our development team uses Zope to manage project documentation. I got rid of the rpm's and am now using Zope 2.12. I can access ZServer over 8080, I can bring up /cgi-bin/Zope.cgi thru Apache, but mod_rewrite is not working. As soon as I turn rewrite on with the following in httpd.conf: RewriteEngine on RewriteLogLevel 9 RewriteLog /var/log/httpd/rewrite_log RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi$1 \ [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] All I get is the an access denied error message, and the following in the error_log: [Tue Jan 4 17:15:41 2000] [error] [client 128.144.2.51] Options ExecCGI is off in this directory: /home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi I would love to start running through the tutorial etc, but I need Apache (for SSL) and therefore need this rewriting trick to work. Thanks in advance for any help. -- Guy Davis mailto:davis@arc.ab.ca (403) 210-5334 Alberta Research Council
