The exception was a SyntaxError, which usually means a typo or other syntax problem in the .py file containing your external method. You can check this by cd'ing to your Zope Extensions directory, starting Python from the command line and trying to import your module - that should also raise a SyntaxError. It will also give you a better clue as to where the problem is. Hope this helps! Brian Lloyd brian(a)digicool.com Software Engineer 540.371.6909 Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

New Apache-ZServer Howto question
by Mike Mikkelsen 05 Jan '00

05 Jan '00

Hello, I just tried to setup apache-zserver according to the new How-To by anser and have run into a "small" problem. As soon as I setup the SiteRoot object in the new virtual host folder, I get the browser error: Proxy Authentication Required This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required. Even after restarting my browser (and Zope) I get this message. I have deleted the Zope folder for the virtual site and started over to no avail. Any words of wisdom? Thanks. -- /////////////////////////////////////////////////// Mike Mikkelsen mikk(a)microbsys.com Micro Business Systems http://microbsys.com Fresno Linux Users Group http://linux.fresno.ca.us Windows 2000, from the people who invented EDLIN! --------------------------------------------------- Windows: Microsoft's tax on computer illiterates

Broken product after relocating ZODB (was: [Zope] problem moving ZODB to new ... )
by Darran Edmundson 05 Jan '00

05 Jan '00

Just before the Christmas break, I was trying to unravel the following mystery: >DE> We have just migrated from a machine running >DE> Zope with the ZServer to a different machine >DE> running Zope with an Apache web server. But >DE> we have a problem, namely, after copying over >DE> the Data.fs ZODB to the new site, Zope cannot >DE> find a needed (but installed) product (Navigator). > >DE> This product definitely exists: >DE> /Zope-2.1.0-src/lib/python/Products/Navigator >DE> so why is Zope not seeing it? >DE> i >DE> From the manager view of the ZODB: > >DE> Product at /optics / Control_Panel / Products / Navigator >DE> There are currently no items in Installed product Navigator (Navigator >DE> Product, Version 1.02) Martijn Pieters replied: >That sounds like a working Product to me. Did it have items there >before the move? What is actually not working, do you get tracebacks? [snip] Yes, instances of Jonas' Navigator product show up with a pretty little bullseye gif image in the management view. I had a number of NavItems scattered throughout my ZODB with which all site navigation was handled. Now, these all show up as "link to a broken product". Further, the Navigator product no longer shows up in the drop-down "Add" selection box of the management interface. However, the pure-python Navigator product does show up in the management interface: DE> Product at /optics / Control_Panel / Products / Navigator DE> There are currently no items in Installed product Navigator (Navigator DE> Product, Version 1.02) so Zope has seen it in the /Zope-2.1.0-src/lib/python/Products/Navigator directory. (I take it from Martijn's last message that the "currently no items" blurb is standard for pure-python products.) I just re-verified that Navigator does work properly when added to a Zope running ZServer. The question: is my inability to use Navigator caused by simply copying over Data.fs from the old site, or does it indicate a problem with our Zope under Apache setup? There are no errors or tracebacks other than those generated from this pseudo- missing product.

User folders and roles in Zope 2.0.0
by Robert Wittams 05 Jan '00

05 Jan '00

I'm using the debian package of zope. This is a bit old, for unknown reasons - it seems to be version 2.0.0. Anyway, I want to have a role to manage users. I made a role, at the root of the hierarchy, to do this, called usermanager. I gave it the ability to manage users, view management screens, etc. I made a test user to try this out. When I look at the user folder using this user, I do not have the ability to manage users. ( manage_main) Just to test things out, I gave the usermanager role all the permissions, on the root, and in case acquisition wasn't working, on the user folder. This *still* didn't allow me to access the user folder and manage users. Eventually, I gave the test user a local role of manager. This finally worked. Is this known behaviour? Is it fixed in a later version of Zope? It is extremely non-intuitive, to say the least. Rob

The Zope product is extremelly powerful, but you should be strong enough not to give up learning if you do not find the solution for your problem in the document you are just browsing. What I did? I logged in to www.zope.org and printed all how-tows, and bound them to have a quite usefull documentation. I cataloguized all articles and I browsed their contents. Here is a list of my favorite how-tos: Advanced DTML Techniques (by Amos) Advanced ZCatalog Searching (by Zen) How to Generate a Form with a Variable Number of Inputs ... (by jpenny) Using External Methods (by Brian) The DTML Name Space (by michel) Simple But Powerful DTML Tips (by admin) When Cookies won't do it (by gaaros) Form Variable Types and Typechecking (by Zen) Custom and international time/date formats (byAlexR) Using selection lists (by AlexR) A first Zope website (by hgebel) Another important source of info is the mailing list archive, I have downloaded 1999-oktober,november,december: they are invaluable. I also downloaded ZQR, and frequently browse it. And of course there is the source code (for example the Python code of SQLSession is quite clear and understandable, helped me a lot to find out how to use RESPONSE.expireCookie() :-)). (2) In our company we set up a small department (I am the boss) this year to develop a (hopefuly eventually killer) ecommerce application. We are going to use Zope. I started writing (in English) a course on Zope (titled Learning Zope). It will be full of screenshots and examples. The total zipped material currently is 580 K (lot of PNG files). Hopefully I will be ready with the introductory lessons in a week. In this month I will not have full time on creating this tutorial, but next month and afterwards I will be dedicated to this task. This material will be donated also to the Zope community (a very small contribution to the enormous goods I got from the Zope-world). My work is based on: (*) The standard documentation set (*) The How-Tos (*) mailing list archives (*) ZQR (*) my experiments In the next week I will announce the first set of my series of lessons. Probably it will be downloadable from the Hungarian Python Group's website. NM

document_title
by Magnus Heino 05 Jan '00

This probably is very simple.. however, I can't get it working. In my root folder, I have: standard_html_header standard_html_footer index_html index_html has the usual <dtml-var standard_html_header> at top and footer at the bottom. I set the title in index_html to "foo". Now, I want the document title to be the title of index_html. So, I add <title><dtml-var document_title></title> to standard_html_header. But now the title in index_html is set to the title in standard_html_header... I understand why, but how should I solve it? /Magnus Heino

I followed the External Method howto by brian to the tee. But i get back these trace back errors: traceback (innermost last): File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_module File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 179, in publish File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 202, in zpublisher_exception_hook File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 165, in publish File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: manage_addExternalMethod) File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 102, in call_object (Object: manage_addExternalMethod) File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMethod.py, line 125, in manage_addExternalMethod File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMethod.py, line 167, in __init__ (Object: upload_external) File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMethod.py, line 186, in manage_edit (Object: upload_external) File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMethod.py, line 195, in getFunction (Object: upload_external) File /home/whho/Zope/lib/python/App/Extensions.py, line 205, in getObject (Info: ('/home/whho/Zope/Extensions/upload.py', 'upload')) SyntaxError: (see above) I can't understand it. The filename I entered (without .py) is correct and even i follow the Function name in my upload.py which is upload_external. I'm loss. I'm using zope2-1-1 binary from zope.org and running under Mandrake 6.0. Help please!

Do I force it >into a list on the input form? I don't know whether this is the same problem I had recently or not. But, anyway, for the <select ... multiple> tag, you are almost surely better off if you specify the ":list" switch in the name. That is, change NAME="styles" to NAME="styles:list". This way, it won't freak out when a single item is selected. The reason is: when a single item is selected and you don't have the ":list" suffix, the form returns a string instead of a list of one single string. I have no clue whether this is problem of HTML/Python/Zope... (I asked the question but got no answer, sorry.) <SELECT NAME="styles:list" size="4" multiple> <OPTION VALUE="" SELECTED>  <dtml-in styles_list> <OPTION VALUE="<dtml-var sequence-item html_quote>"><dtml-var sequence-item> </dtml-in styles_list> </SELECT> hope this works, Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
