scoping problem?
by Arjan Scherpenisse 12 Nov '99

Hi, i have this code, to display a 'see also' block in my navigation bar, using a 'seealso' property in the folder. This property is a comma-seperated list of interesting id's. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('links', _.string.splitfields(seealso,','))"> <dtml-in links> <tr><td> <a href="<dtml-var "absolute_url()">"><dtml-var title></a> </td></tr> </dtml-in> But, this doesn't work as expected. The values from the absolute_url() and the title are still the ones from the current page. When i try something like <var sequence-item>, the correct id is displayed. But when i try a statement like <dtml-with sequence-item>, it uses again the wrong scope, it seems. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. -- Arjan Scherpenisse, A.Scherpenisse(a)zap.a2000.nl ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Hi, MS Outlook just gave me a signature virus"

Does the Zope installation have some internal email account object? I know I am missing some key fact here. (Our mail is handled by a linux box). If I set up an alias, and subscribe the alias to the mailing list, WHO/WHAT am I aliasing? I am very confused...Option 1 sounds the most appealing, but I would appreciate any additional details anyone can provide. (full text of all Options at end of message) Thanks for all your assistance...converting my student group's site to Zope is an incredible (albeit frustrating) learning experience. --sachin shah --- Paul Everitt <paul(a)digicool.com> wrote: > 1) Push the emails into Zope. What you're doing isn't normally done with ZClasses. Chances are, you can do what you'd like much easier by using DTML Methods in the root and acquiring them in subfolders. Since this isn't a production site, I'll assume you're using ZClasses just as an exercise. There are a couple caveats when using ZClasses. (If these have been corrected when I wasn't looking, hopefully someone will correct me.) A ZClass cannot be the index_html of a Folder. You can call it that, but it won't work. What you _could_ do is put an index_html document in your SFolder class, which looks for an SPage called 'index_spage' or some such thing and renders it. That would also allow you to manage your headers and footers and whatnot from outside your content SPages. Do try to follow the convention of using standard_html_header and _footer. With this little scheme, the index_html method you end up with in your ZPage would something look like this-- <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-if "objectValues(['SFolder']) </dtml-if> <dtml-if index_spage> <dtml-var index_spage> <dtml-else> <dtml-in "objectValues(['SPage'])"> </dtml-in> </dtml-else> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> As you can see, nothing is happening here that couldn't be done by placing a similar index_html method in your root Zope folder and acquiring it in subfolders. Ack - Zope doesn't care, but your browser does and the extra tag(s) are wrecking its html rendering. I'm adding a fix for 2.1.0 for this. In the meantime if you want to fix this on your site, edit the file lib/python/App/undo.dtml in your Zope installation and change line 41 from: <dtml-var description> by to: <dtml-var description html_quote> by Brian Lloyd brian(a)digicool.com Software Engineer 540.371.6909 Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

REMINDER: Keep technical discussions on zope-dev!
by Paul Everitt 12 Nov '99

12 Nov '99

I'm resending the message below as a gentle nudge for folks. There are some more email threads such as: o Exception ThreadLock.error: 'release unlocked lock' o Using regexes in DTML expressions o Property Sheet Questions o How can you tell if what kind of object it is? ...that are better discussed on zope-dev(a)zope.org. I'm not trying to be _too_ much of a nag, but I'm getting a LOT of feedback from people again saying the traffic is overwhelming and the list needs to be split. ---------- Just a quick reminder: there is another mailing list (zope-dev(a)zope.org) for technical questions. A quick glance through the last 50 or so zope(a)zope.org messages shows that over half of them are more appropriate for "developers" than "content managers" or a general audience. zope-dev was created namely because the community wanted to better manage the volume (read: deluge) of Zope mail. After a long discussion which generated many emails :^), the community agreed to having a list for general and introductory questions and a list focused on developers. Some example email discussion threads that could be moved over: o ZClass constructor / namespace question o Comma delimited file and the re python object o complex question (kind of an obvious one :^) o Random ID's using ZopeDate() problems... o xmlrpc calls require string results? Ken wrote a script that shows the subscription/unsubscription rate on the mailing lists. Around the time of the split we saw the ratio improve, meaning fewer people were getting frustrated. The ratio has gotten worse again. Let's work to make sure the traffic gets managed as best as possible. ANNOUNCE: Digital Creations and Sybase press release
by Paul Everitt 12 Nov '99

12 Nov '99

Howdy folks. At long last I can talk publicly about this: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/991111/va_digital_1.html -or- http://www.digicool.com/News/Sybase "Digital Creations, creator of Zope and the leader in Open Source web development, announced today that database management giant Sybase is giving support for the Zope web development platform. The partnership will allow Digital Creations to further integrate the Zope platform and Sybase, enabling Sybase users to leverage the power of the Linux operating system in conjunction with the Internet. The combination of these two powerful platforms will enable companies who are moving to Linux to dynamically manage their enterprise data and create world- class applications." Getting a quote out of an important person at Sybase is a Good Thing, not to mention the fact that Sybase co-funded the development of the database adapter. This press release helps legitimize Zope, as everybody has heard of Sybase. This begs the question: when are we going to make the rewritten adapter available? Answer: within a week. I'd like to thank David Bloom at i-Gift for making this happen! --Paul

Looking for Python.Zope programmer in Europe: {France/Italy}
by Jason Cunliffe 12 Nov '99

12 Nov '99

Hello This is a preliminary message-in-a-bottle post... 1. Intro I am looking for a Python.Zope programmer to work with me on a creating a dynamic 'smart-map' web site for an e-commerce maritime r&d project. The site will need to manage special on-line interactive calendar featuring schematics of routes, progress and shipping schedule. 2. To-Do Skills/tasks will involve: - linking to existing database of shipping information, - creating new project database, - linking to GIS, - rendering interactive graphics for calendar and routes, - general zope site design and construction. - Linux web server setup (Zserver/Roxen/Apache/??) and Zope connectivity 3. Python Python skills/tasks may involve: - Zope External Methods relating to the following: - linking to GIS tools [considering to use Manifold System at present because of low-cost high feature set. It is a very good product but alas only runs on Win32. This may not be problem as we can use win32com Python extensions. http://www.manifold.net ] - building win32com components if needed to allow fast prototyping and connecting with other off-the-shelf software - generating, rendering and converting of graphics in vector format: [possible candidate formats = Flash4, SVG (see my previous posts)] - possible Python extensions using 'C' libraries [openSWF Flash, SVG, Hipparchus] 4. Vague ?? The first phase of the project will answer many specifics when we meet with end users and learn about their present data use, methods of work, information flow, so we can map these against our overall project design goals. Although the project focuses on maritime transport, we want to approach as an inter-modal transport project and anticipate to develop modules/products which could be applied more widely. 5. Context The context is an EC sponsored R&D project called 'DOLPHINS' under the 'IST' 5th Framework Programme See http://www.cordis.lu for more about IST and other programmes The main partners/participants based in: {'Italy': ['Napoli', 'Livorno'], 'France': ['Seillans', 'Sophia Antipolis'], 'Spain: ['Valencia']} 6. Status We are still awaiting final confirmation of contract, but anticipate kickoff around 25th January, 2000. The main Python.Zope development work is during first 6 months. though the project itself is an 18 month duration (field trials). 7. Location Most of the work could be done remotely on-line, but in my experience important brainstorming, design work and review should be done based on personal contact initially. This would mean travel to South of France (1 hour from Nice) and staying here to work with me for a couple of weeks. (expenses paid). 8. Language I am English but speak pretty fluent French. Knowledge of Italian woudl be helpful but by no means esential. Python.Zope is :-) 9. Conditions I am looking for a programmer to work full time during the first analysis /development phase and then participate occasionally [ongoing] for a few days around later milestones, covering installation, debugging, trainging, preparation of deliverables including documentation, reports, final exploitation plans. This last point is important. EC projects encourage partners to produce commercial products after the R&D trial are concluded. If you are interested to develop intermodal e-commerce 'Dolphins' may offer a useful opportunity for skills and market. I also believe it is a good context to promote the use of Python.Zope 10. About 'Dolphins' The aim of 'Dolphins' is to develop new short-sea-shipping business through e-commerce tools. In particular we hope to reduce heavy truck traffic on European roads by making it easier for shippers, agents and others to send cargo by ship instead of road, where possible. Large transport logistics companies already have integrated methods, but smaller businesses especially trucking companies tend to use roads because of habit, perceived convenience, in dependance etc. In fact short-shipping-routes are cheaper, environmentally cleaner and allow for new business opportunities. Ships can be a little slower than direct road, but for many applications this does not matter if well organized. The obstacles to changing habits are more cultural than technical though we plan to use new technology as a transitional support tool where much business is done today by phone and fax. 'Dolphins' thus needs to develop easy-to-use interfaces allowing people to browse and select route/cost/time options. Typically we imagine this sel4ection could be presented as 'tagged' dossier available to shipping agents to sped up the entire process. Linking of forms etc would likely be a crucial component. The resulting system is thus a classic case of developing something for 'customers who have customers who have customers'. IMHO Python.Zope fits the bill nicely. 11. Followup Please contact me directly *_off-list_* if you any of the above is of interest to you. Since this is my first time using python ( my background is Perl and PHP) I made it very simple. If you set a flag align=1 in the dtml-tree tag it will use the ALIGN="LEFT" used in Zope 2.0.1, otherwise it will not insert an ALIGN tag in the <TD> tag. The solution is good enough for us, and I would like to pass this by you for comments, also I would like to ask for this change to be inserted in the Zope distribution.
