I've had this dicussion quite a few times before. I am willing to make mxODBC free for use in Open Source products like Zope. Use for other purposes would not be covered by the license though, so you can't just extract it from Zope and use it separately. DC didn't like this, so we didn't come to an agreement. That's just about what sums up this discussion. Note that mxODBC will go commercial with the 2.0 release. It'll be free for non-commercial use and there'll be a small fee for commercial installations. I have to take this step to finance further development on it, because keeping up to ODBC and the fast moving RDMS market has become way too time consuming. Sorry, but that's the way it goes... As result of this funding I expect to be able to include new cool features (hooks into the data conversion process, bulk operation support, ODBC bridging, etc.) and support for even more database backends. -- Marc-Andre Lemburg ______________________________________________________________________ Y2000: 50 days left Business: http://www.lemburg.com/ Python Pages: http://www.lemburg.com/python/

Accessing root folder from PythonMethods
by Itamar Shtull-Trauring 11 Nov '99

I want to be able to access the root folder of Zope from a PythonMethod - is there any easier way than just going up a chain of aq_parent till you hit the end (what's aq_parent then, None?)? -- Itamar - itamars(a)ibm.net ---------------------------o----------------------------------------------o Perl/Gimp Greeting Cards | Trust? Re: [Zope] Usability of Zope (Was: DTML Syntax contd. + rant)

[Paul violates his own 'please move stuff to zope-dev' post, so I'm going to do so, too :) ] >>> Paul Everitt wrote > Zope's usability needs to improve a LOT. I got a good dose of this when > I taught a three day Zope course several months back. When you have to > explain it to people, you really find out how baroque Zope can be. The major problem I, and the people where I work, have is not just that DTML's syntax is, ahem, 'distinctive', but that when you have a problem, you really don't get enough to help you solve it. Often trying to fix a problem involves just randomly trying permutations of the DTML that you want, until you hit the magic combination. I've almost given up entirely on ZClass programming (for anything but the simplest tasks) in favour of Python Products for this reason - when my python is defective, I can find out very quickly and very easily _why_. Inside a ZClass, there's no real way to figure out what the heck is going on. This isn't just a matter of not being familiar with DTML - I've been smacking my head against it since Principia days. That I haven't just given up entirely is testament to the other parts of Zope (the good stuff) - no matter how clunky DTML gets when you start trying to do the logic of your site in it, the rest of Zope is good enough to make up for it. > Though I agree with Andrew that the problem isn't just DTML, that seems > to be a locus. DTML *is* being used in a way that violates its design > (separation of presentation and logic). But at the same time we at DC > lead the way on this violation, and aren't actively promoting viable > alternatives. Python Methods are a promising approach, and one I'd like to see more work on - they allow the convenience of coding Python, without having to restart each time. I'm not _entirely_ sure about the security of them, but then, I'm prepared to take the tradeoff - the people who are working on the sites I work on all have logins to the box anyway (and if I need to give access to people I don't trust, then they don't get to work with the PMs). > I'll say this about an ngDTML effort: good luck. The current quandry > exists for a reason: there are a lot of tough design choices. That > which is clear to the Python hacker is obtuse to the HTML newbie. That > which is clear to the DTML developer is inefficient to the > parser/renderer. That which is... I don't know that a different DTML will solve the problem - if anything, I'd guess it would make it worse, since the temptation to throw every other feature in would be strong. -- Anthony Baxter <anthony(a)interlink.com.au> It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

RE: [Zope] COMObject How-To
by Toby Dickenson 11 Nov '99

11 Nov '99

You need to patch Zope 2.0 to initialize COM. I posted http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/1999-August/001389.html After that COMObject may work, but you may get better mileage out of external methods. Mailing list archives not readable with mutt ?
by flight＠mathi.uni-heidelberg.de 11 Nov '99

11 Nov '99

For some reason, you can't read the downloadable versions of the mailing list archives with mutt--it fails to split the mbox into messages. Strangely, mailx just works fine. I tried to use procmail's formail to split and concatenate the messages, but somehow that fails, too. Has anybody a hint how I can make the mbox suitable for mutt ? Gregor

Once again the selection property
by Michael Gutmann 11 Nov '99

11 Nov '99

Well, I don't want to bother you - and I really reviewed a lot (nearly all, I think) of the mails in the list and even the HOWTOs, but ... I still have no idea how to make a selection property properly. I'm making a ZClass with a property-sheet, in which there should be a property, that has a value you select from an ordinary select field. I generated it with type "selection", name "Status" and value "status_liste". (the error message told me to give a variable name as a value) And now my question: where do I fill "status_liste" with what kind of values? I'd love to fill it with something like: {'status1':1,'status2':2,'status3':3} Big hurdle or just my incompetence? Zee you, Michael gutmann(a)uni-duesseldorf.de

How to distinguish between objects with and without access restrictions
by Michael Gutmann 11 Nov '99

11 Nov '99

Hello again, after a week or so without any zoping (bad days indeed ;-) I have another problem with an automatic folder list: I combine some sites in one Zope site and have on the top page a list of the available sites. It's just something like <UL> <dtml-in "objectValues(['Folder'])"> <LI><A HREF="<dtml-var id>"><dtml-var title></A> </dtml-in> </UL> Well, no problem ... except when there are (and there is) folders, that are not accessible to the public. Then you can only view the hole page with a password. One solution is to make this page a proxy for "manager" (and as far as I see is there no way to do it otherwise, right?). Now I want to distinguish between a public accessible folder and an other one. In what instance of the folder do I find the information and is it accessible even when I don't have the right to access the folder? Zanks, Michael gutmann(a)uni-duesseldorf.de
