Collector reports not being visible is annoying
by flight＠mathi.uni-heidelberg.de 10 Nov '99

you guys at DC, I guess it's for security reason's, but I feel it a little bit annoying that most open bug reports in the collector (the ones "under review") are not readable for normal humans. Most other projects have their BTS completely open, and it seems to be viable. Some would argue that this is what made open source projects so successful (Debian says "we won't hide our problems"). Perhaps it would be possible to make this review period much shorter in general, so that each report is checked for immediate security relevance in one or two days, and is then made readable, even if it was not yet reviewed in full ? Perhaps add a checkbox "Potential security risk" to the report form, so that the reporter can give a hint on the severity of the bug. The way it currently is, if I want to check problems with ZClasses, there are 65 reports. More than the half of them is under review, and in general the subject of the report is not so clear that I can see if it refers to the problem I'm running into. Gregor

Looking at the license from Marc-André's starship site (http://starship.python.net/~lemburg/) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Redistribution of this software or modifications thereof for commercial use requires a separate license which must be negotiated with the author. As a guideline, packaging the module and documentation with other free software will be possible without fee or royalty as described above. This license does not allow you to ship this software as part of a product that you sell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If Zope doesn't qualify as "free software" here (I don't know if he means only GPL, or if Zope's "OpenSource" designation is enough), why not ask about licensing the code compatibly for use with Zope (a la Medusa)? Even in the worst case, I believe Zope could bundle a DA for mxODBC, and require that the user install mxODBC separately. ================================================================================ Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com http://www.palladion.com Palladion Software Houston, Texas, USA 713-523-6582

Crashes with ZServer
by Francois Chalaoux 10 Nov '99

Hi Zoppiste, Since 2 weeks I had dreams. The ZServer from Zope-2.0.1 was stable. zhttpserver was forgotten. But now I had bad experiences with zope. The ZServer crash four times this lastest two weeks and I did not find explanation :( My startup file contain the following lines. I never observed -Z option in action !! : #! /bin/sh reldir=`dirname $0` PYTHONHOME=`cd $reldir; pwd` export PYTHONHOME exec /opt/zope/Zope-2.0.1/bin/python \ $PYTHONHOME/z2.py \ -d '192.152.167.62' -Z 'var/Z2.pid' -D "$@" I catch only these following errors : 1/ "1999-11-10T13:39:57 PROBLEM(100) ZServer unhandled connect event" when I start ZServer with 2/ 1999-11-10T14:11:59 ERROR(200) ZServer uncaptured python exception, closing channel <zhttp_channel connected 192.152.167.199:4145 at 8595b08 channel#: 76 requests:1> (socket.error:(9, 'Bad file descriptor') [/opt/zope/Zope-2.0.1/ZServer/medusa/asynchat.py|initiate_send|211] [/opt/zope/Zope-2.0.1/ZServer/medusa/http_server.py|send|394] [/opt/zope/Zope-2.0.1/ZServer/medusa/asyncore.py|send|237]) 918 Did somebody bad experiences with this ZServer? Houston ZUG interest?
by Tres Seaver 10 Nov '99

10 Nov '99

I am pondering starting an informal Houston Zope Users' Group, and am soliciting interest. Another Zopista here in Houston has a (fairly small) meeting site available, or we could even set it up as a lunchtime thing at a central spot. Please reply privately if you would be interested, Tres. -- ================================================================================ Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com http://www.palladion.com Palladion Software Houston, Texas, USA 713-523-6582

This is getting weird, Can't change password??????
by Daniel G. Rusch 10 Nov '99

Hey all remember me? This is getting very weird, The code below now works, no changes. What would cause this code to one day work, then stop working and then again start working again. I am not only confused but concerned.... By the way I would like to thank those of you who have spent your valuable time looking into this problem, thank you very much. DR Original message below: Hey all Does anyone know why neither of these change the password, no errors are reported the page they are on renders fine. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('name','TestVictim')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('password','1')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('confirm','1')"> <dtml-call "acl_users.manage_users(submit='Edit', REQUEST=REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('name','TestVictim')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('password','1')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('confirm','1')"> <dtml-call "acl_users.manage_users(submit='Change', REQUEST=REQUEST)"> DR

Using regexes in DTML expressions
by Ben Glazer 10 Nov '99

I'd like to be able to use a regex from the Python re module in a <dtml-if> tag expression, e.g. <dtml-if "_.re.search('(([Ps|Sc|S|C][i|y])|Sigh)Comp?', company_name)"> Pickled pink. </dtml-if> What is the easiest way to do something like this? Thanks, Ben

This is most likely a Solid time-out issue. I believe DAs keep their connection open all the time, and the SOLID.INI file defaults to a 120-minute inactivity timeout on the connection. A question is whether DAs are supposed to be smart enough to reconnect some number of times before giving up. This is important for sites that may restart their databases periodically, or that have occasional network problems -- it'd be a pain to have to manually reconnect each of your Zope DAs each time that happens. What do the other DAs do and what is the correct thing to do? You can turn the time-outs off, as I do here. Change the parameter(s) in the SOLID.INI file as below. ----- cut here ----- [Srv] ConnectTimeOut = 0 ; Idle time in minutes allowed for connections before they ; are dropped. If set to zero, timeout is inactive. AbortTimeOut = 120 ; Idle time in minutes allowed for transactions before they ; are aborted. If set to zero, timeout is inactive. ----- cut here ----- -Jeff Rush

ZSQL: How to use return value from an 'INSERT'?
by Steen Suder 10 Nov '99

10 Nov '99

I'm using PostgreSQL 6.5 and Zope 2.x on RH6. When inserting a new record in database I'd like to access the return OID from the INSERT query from within my ZSQL method. That is: if it returns anything... psql does return the OID. How do I do? -- Best regards / mvh., Steen Suder sysadm kollegie6400.dk OpenSource - Sign of the time

This isn't Zope's fault. I keep hearing this but don't understand the overlooking of Solid. The ZODBCDA recompiled w/o changes for the Solid SQL DB under Linux. Solid isn't free or even cheap, and many disagree with their radical shift in marketing this past year (small developers -> big $$$ developers) but it does exist and it is ODBC compliant. Their manuals are a defacto ODBC reference work. -Jeff Rush
