Yep, this is indeed an excellent post. Others have forwarded it to me. The good news is that I've collated all the comments, come up with an action plan, and come up with a mockup for a new Zope.org home page. When I have some subsequent progress I'll open it up for review. If anybody out there has good web design experience and would like to help...HELP! :^) --Paul Paul Everitt Digital Creations paul(a)digicool.com 540.371.6909 ----------------------------------------- The Open Source Zope application server http://www.zope.org/ > -----Original Message----- > From: Tres Seaver [mailto:tseaver@palladion.com] > Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 1999 4:32 PM > To: zope(a)zope.org; Ron Mahlmann > Subject: [Zope] "Front door" topic > > > This is from an excellent post to comp.lang.python, and would > be an excellent > addition to the "front door" Zope website: > > Evan Simpson <evan(a)tokenexchange.com> wrote: > > > > There has been a lot of discussion lately on the Zope mailing list > > (zope(a)zope.org) about making this sort of information more readily > > available on the website, but here's a brief intro: > > > > Zope has several parts, which work well together, but are all > > optional: > > > > 1. Re: [Zope] Howto ZClient

Hi Zoppistes and Thank a lot Loren for your answer. 1/ When you wrote this url ( "http://www.allocine.fr/goto.asp?RD=P0049" ) is working perfectly you mean in webclient method? Cause for me as you saw in my last mail, zope is looking for this object "goto.asp?RD=P0049" and it is not an zope object. It is a shitty asp file :( 2/ Is there a tip to, by program, answer to the proxy without having to type username and passwd into the browser dialog? > Hi, > > I tried to use "Using ZClient to Access Another Server" howto but I got > some difficulties : > > 1/ When the URL is "http://www.allocine.fr/goto.asp?RD=P0049" is present > then I got this funny error , any idea ? : I just tried that URL and got a nice HTML page back -- no errors -- so I guess you solved that problem. Bye, FR. > > 2/ The others parameters in the webclient method are 'username' and > 'passwd'. I am behind a proxy which ask me the first time I try to > access Internet a username and my passwd. Are these couple of parameters > the same in the method and in my proxy request, cause even with my > username and the passwd in the method I have to insert the couple? Look in ../lib/python/ZPublisher/Client.py and you will see that the username and passwd are inserted into the URL where they work with the browser's basic authentication. This has no relation to your proxy. -- Loren -- .--. |o_o | |:_/ | // \ \ Chalaoux François-Régis (| | ) mailto:chalaoux@cybercable.fr /'\_ _/`\ http://www.advl.org/ \___)=(___/

Zope Devs in SF Bay Area?
by Michael Simcich 09 Nov '99

09 Nov '99

Any here know of any Zope developers in the SF Bay Area? Or any place a list of such would be available? I didn't find anything like a Zope developer list on the Digital Creations website, but wonder if there shouldn't be one. Thanks Michael Simcich AccessTools

Zope vs. ColdFusion for e-commerce development
by Ben Galbraith 09 Nov '99

09 Nov '99

Zope Folks, I'm with a new e-commerce startup and we're currently evaluating the development tools we'll be using to create our website. The platform will either be Sun hardware running Solaris 7/Apache, or Intel/Linux boxes. We initially evaluated four solutions: mod_perl, PHP (using Apache module support), ColdFusion, and Zope. We've eliminated mod_perl because of maintenance nightmares, PHP because, well, we just did, and now we're down to ColdFusion and Zope. Initially I favored Zope, but there are a few concerns I have about it. First off, the size of the ColdFusion development pool and it's development history suggest greater stability and a more mature feature set. Second, it seems that ColdFusion offers all the functionality that Zope does and then some. Third, ColdFusion seems to offer similiar performance. Fourth, the database connectivity seems to be equal to Zope's. Fifth, their tag-based programming language seems to offer equivalent functionality to Zope's. Sixth, I can find more ColdFusion developers than I can shake a stick at, but I have to explain to everyone I meet what Zope is. So, as my lack of information leads me to believe, there are only two drawbacks to ColdFusion as compared to Zope: (1) I have to pay $3.5k for each license, and (2) Zope has a superior model for delegating ownership to different people for the website. Could you correct any misconceptions I have and explain to me why I should choose Zope over ColdFusion? I want to select the tool by Wed. or Thurs., so a quick reply would be appreciated. Thanks! Ben

Re: [Zope] Jon Udell (Byte) on Linux/ODBC and MySQLDA difficulties

I've never used postgresql with zope but I have used it as a back end for applications. I've also used mysql and Oracle. Mysql and Postgresql are very different beasts Mysql is fairly fast and light whereas postgresql is slower and needs more resources. But for sheer flexability it wins hands down as does its support for big database features, though unfortunately it is not yet in the same class as oracle for supporting enterprise environment. I've never had a problem with its reliability in a production environment as long as you feed and water it enough and are sensible about when to use a release. "Front door" topic

This is from an excellent post to comp.lang.python, and would be an excellent addition to the "front door" Zope website: Evan Simpson <evan(a)tokenexchange.com> wrote: > > There has been a lot of discussion lately on the Zope mailing list > (zope(a)zope.org) about making this sort of information more readily > available on the website, but here's a brief intro: > > Zope has several parts, which work well together, but are all > optional: > > 1. How can you tell if what kind of object it is?
by Adrian Esteban Madrid 09 Nov '99

Is there something like _.isDTMLMethod, _.isDTMLDocument, _.isFolder hidden somewhere? I've been browsing the documentation but have not been able to figure this out. I need that to create a dynamic navigational bar that sshould get set like this: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('fobs', [])">  <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('dobs', [])">   <dtml-in "PARENTS[0].objectValues()" skip_unauthorized> <dtml-let item="_.getitem('sequence-item', 0)"> <dtml-unless "hasProperty('hidden') and hidden"> <dtml-if "item.isFolder">  <dtml-call "fobs.insert(0, item)"> <dtml-elif "item.isDTMLMethod">  <dtml-call "dobs.insert(0, item)"> </dtml-if> </dtml-unless> </dtml-let> </dtml-in> Any ideas? -- Adrian Esteban Madrid Network Support, ATS Brigham Young University

Your manage_users problem

OK, I see the issue: submit and REQUEST are positional arguments, and you are trying to call manage_users)_ as though they were a keyword argument. Hey all Does anyone know why neither of these change the password, no errors are reported and the page they are on renders fine. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('name','TestVictim')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('password','1')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('confirm','1')"> <dtml-call "acl_users.manage_users(submit='Edit', REQUEST=REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('name','TestVictim')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('password','1')"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('confirm','1')"> <dtml-call "acl_users.manage_users(submit='Change', REQUEST=REQUEST)"> DR
