ODBC DA
by Jay, Dylan 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

Currently the ODBC DA doesn't handle transactions to Level3 and therefore is a major performance bottleneck on my sites. The reasoning for it not going to level 3 I believe is because the ODBC spec doesn't state whether it is thread safe or not. Surely some ODBC implementations must be thread safe. If anyone knows which ones are could they say and then maybe we could have an option in the ODBCDA to which level of transaction support we use.

Getting an object indirectly in a PythonMethod
by Jay, Dylan 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

I have a python method as part of a ZClass. I want this method to return an object whose id is stored in a ZClass property. In DTML this would be as simple as <dtml-return "_[ObjNameProperty]"> I can't figure out how to do this in a python method. Things such as self.getattr(ObjNameProperty) don't seem to work at all.

RE: [Zope] Comma delimited file and the re python object
by ScherBi＠BAM.com 04 Nov '99

The simplest solution in my experience has been to interpret csv as "circumflex separated value" instead of "comma separated value" when creating the file in the first place. How much easier would life be if ASCII had a field separation character? Using commas to separate fields that may contain commas makes no sense. (please excuse the ranting...) How to add an image to a ZClass
by Willie Peloquin 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

Hi, I am trying to add images to a ZClass. It can't be done through properties, so I tried to add one to the class itself. Fine, it allowed me to add an image, but I had to specify an image file. Now how do I go about adding a different image to each class instance? Thanks, Willie Willie Peloquin Senior Software Engineer - Contract http://www.ismi.net/~wpeloqui "It is unwise to stray from the obvious and simple."

FYI: Quick review of the downtime
by Paul Everitt 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

Just as an attempt to share a lesson learned in the downtime, here's a quick report. Since this is from me, instead of somebody smart, don't look for too much wisdom. :^) Earlier this week Ken and Michel worked hard on getting the site migrated to a new machine. Though there were a lot of painful things associated with getting the mail archives moved over, mail delivery, etc., everything went OK. Once that settled down, we wanted to get the site updated with some fixes from CVS and to add in some stuff like ZTopics that had been tested. We did a cvs update and recompiled some of the Python C extensions that had changed. Here's where we hit (but didn't notice) a snag. The Python development environment hadn't been installed on the new machine and we didn't notice that our extensions didn't get updated. When the site came back up and it came time to unpickle some things, the loading failed because the dynamically loaded extensions failed. Of course it *looked* like the database had bad state, as the exception got handled without passing through the import error. We opened up the site in the Python interpreter and tried to grab some objects. That's when we noticed, for instance, the XMLDocuments were failing to load because the C extension couldn't be imported, because there was a Py_something_or_other symbol error. So Ken installed the include files, did the compile, and things came back. There was one other gotcha but I don't have the scoop on it. Still, hope you find this helpful! --Paul Paul Everitt Digital Creations paul(a)digicool.com 540.371.6909 ----------------------------------------- The Open Source Zope application server http://www.zope.org/

WAP/WML for Cell Phone Wireless Web?
by Cary O'Brien 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

Has anyone looked at using Zope to serve WML (wireless markup language) pages that can be read by cell-phones. I'm here in Washington DC, and it seems as if Sprint PCS will have this service soon. It sounds pretty good. If I understand it correctly, your phone sends out a request which is turned into a http request by the cell phone company. The site then returns wml (an xml doctype), not html, which deals with things like what the buttons do, as well as encoding whatever content you can fit on the tiny screen. So all a zope site would have to do is add a new mime type (not sure what it is), and serve up the wml rather than html. Using zope DTML and regular zope stuff to handle common menus and control of pages should all fall together. The only things that would have to be changed (and I don't know how to do this) are: 1) mime type 2) file suffix (.wml instead of .html) Has anyone looked at this? Anyone interested? -- cary Cary O'Brien cobrien(a)radix.net Links: http://www.openwap.org http://www.wapforum.org http://www.phone.com

FW: Announcement: Midgard troubleshooting help
by Patrick Phalen 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

This just appeared on Linux Weekly News. I guess the Midgard list gets its share of people with installation questions. ;) ==================================================== Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 19:09:53 +0200 From: Emiliano Heyns <E.Heyns(a)uci.kun.nl> Subject: Announcement: Midgard troubleshooting help To: chris(a)linuxdev.net, lwn(a)lwn.net, webmaster(a)linuxtoday.com This message was posted to the Midgard mailing list, and I thought it may be of interest to some of you. Thanks in advance, Emile Heyns --------------------------------------------- Getting Midgard installed correctly is still by far the commonest problem heard on Midgard's mailing list. While improving the documentation and making the installation processes better helps, the truth is that Midgard requires many different components, most of whom are coming from other Open Source projects, and so the installation will still be difficult for new users. We are organizing a group of volunteers to help newcomers through the installation and collect feedback to improve both the installation process and documentation. This message is both a call for volunteers who have succesfully installed Midgard before and want to help others to get there, and an announcement that the installation help is now available.
