Java Port

Did anyone try to port Zope to Java (using JPython)? But why do I think it's nice to have a Java-Zope? - using Java classes with Zope - running servlets and/or running Zope as servlet - performance could benefit from JIT compilers or compile Zope as native binary (gcj) - portability? not sure if Java is more portable than Python ;) Smoerk

CopySupport methods permissions - do they make sense?
by Dave Parker 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

I'm doing a site that allows membership. When users sign up, I create a folder with an acl_users folder and a user for them. All the folder/user creation happens as an anonymous user, which should be ok 'cause the only way they can do these things is via my logic. Problem is, I'd also *like* to copy or clone a index_html page into the user's new folder. What I think I've found, however, is that pretty much all of the methods in OFS/CopySupport.py require "View management screens" permissions in order to do copy/clone operations. Delete operations, on the other hand, have their own permission setting. Does this make sense? I really don't want to have to turn on "View management screens" for anonymous users, and I don't think I should have to just to use copy/clone methods. IMHO the copy operations should have their own seperate permission as delete does. What do you think? As a completely seperate aside, it'd be nice if, when access fails due to permissions, Zope would report on just what sort of permission would be required in order to accomplish the operation in question. As it stands it's an easter egg hunt and it's not too fun.

Simple Tutorial for new directory users
by Robert Canary 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

Hi, I remember when Zope was first happening, There was a simple tutorial in the main directory. I had pointed many users to that document and did fine with it. However, about a two months ago I had upgraded the Zope server, and now it is not there. I did I break it, or has it been removed? thanks in advance ;-) -- robert canary system services OhioCounty.Net rwcanary(a)ohiocounty.net (270)298-9331 Office (270)298-7449 Fax

dtml-with and only
by Barry A. Warsaw 04 Nov '99

04 Nov '99

I'm sure this is a newbie question, so go easy on me :) Anyway, I've finally gotten around to mocking up the python.org website in Zope. I saw some neat code called Breadcrumbs which includes a list of parent links to the page you're sitting on, e.g. Home > Community > On-line PSA Registration Naturally, I modified the DTML to do things a little differently, and one of the things I want to do is to be able to add title abbreviations (i.e. nicknames) to some folders, using them in preference to title or id (I want a sort of nickname_or_title_or_id method). So the idea is to add a property to some folders called `nickname' and use that if it exists, otherwise use the title_or_id. The problem of course is that I do not want `nickname' to be acquired. I figured I could write DMTL like the following to accomplish this: -------------------- snip snip -------------------- <dtml-with folderobj only> <dtml-if nickname><dtml-var nickname> <dtml-else><dtml-var title_or_id> </dtml-else> </dtml-with> -------------------- snip snip -------------------- >From the docs, it seems that the `only' tag should stop the name search in enclosing namespaces, but this doesn't seem to work. In my root folder, I include a nickname property, and set it to "Home". In a subfolder (say "psa") I do not have a nickname property, but this DTML method is returning "Home" for both folder objects. I've also tried substituting the dtml-if test with something like <dtml-if "_.hasattr(folderobj, 'nickname')"> but that didn't seem to make a difference. Is this enough information to help? I'm sure I'm either misunderstanding some simple concept or doing some dumb newbie lose. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, -Barry

RE: [Zope] Comma delimited file and the re python object
by ScherBi＠BAM.com 04 Nov '99

Another idea you might try is to load the file into MS excel. It has a fairly nifty tool for loading delimited files. Once you have it in excel, you can export to something sane. Other spreadsheets on other platforms may be able to handle this as well. Can someone please take credit for writing the HTML-4-ification script that was contributed a few days ago? For the life of me I can't remember who it was, and we'd like to credit the original author in the code. -Michel
