I want to make a simple tree of these objects, so that when the person clicks on the + sign, the given object is displayed. So, I set leaves to be the object's display method and branches_expr to call the function. But -- this gives the object, but clicking + gives another listing of the same objects, and this keeps on going, presumably infinately. I tried passing tree-level to the function, but _ mysteriously is inaccessible inside dtml-tree. What exactly should I be doing? FWIW, I created a product and an Event class that holds information on events. I then made a folder called eventDb that is populated with these types of objects. In that folder's parent, there is a getEventsByDate method, that takes start and end dates, and returns a list of objects that fall in that range. I then want to have a nice tree display of these objects. First, let me thank both of you for very helpful answers to my questions. I've got the looping through the lines property to generate links working pretty well. And I think I'm getting a better understanding of acquisition. But I still have one problem, and a comment. Using the following looping construct: <dtml-in "myobject.the_lines"> <a href="&dtml-sequence-item;"><dtml-var "_[_['sequence-item']].title"></a> </dtml-in> I get items that are in the acquisition path (and, thus, can be identified by a single id) just fine. However, when I try to process an item in the lines property that looks like this: top_folder.sub_folder.target_folder, as you suggested, I get a "Key Error." Obviously, it's not recognizing the item as a valid path to/descriptor of the object. I'm guessing that there's a trick to format the string properly so it'll be recognized as a valid path. Is that correct, and what might it be? Thanks for the assistance. Finally, a comment. I've been going through ALL of the e-mail archives (I'm up to March 1999. Man, you people talk alot ;) ). And I've seen a number of threads that all seem to be asking about how to do the same thing: simple linking across hierarchies (and thus out of acquisition paths). When I first heard that Zope was object oriented, I thought "Great, finally no need to worry about the locations of files in directory structures. You just call the object up by its unique id, and you'll get it no matter where it is in the ODB." While that is indeed how it works as long as you're in the acquisition path, you're back to specifying "paths" (even if you want to call them explicit object ids) as soon as you want to go lateral across the hierarchy. I guess I don't see why this should be so. As long as the developer is willing to maintain globally unique ids (Zope seems to enforce this already, doesn't it?), shouldn't they be able to access across-hierarchy objects as simply as in-hierarchy objects? In one of the threads on this subject ("OO Paradigm", Jan-Feb 1999), Jim Fulton even seemed to indicate that there is no reason that something like this could be done, albeit with some Python programming or the use of ZTables (http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-February/001716.html) Sorry to ramble, but I guess my question is this: Is there some compelling reason to limit simple object reference in Zope to hierarchical acquisition? I think Zope is a marvelous programming environment, and I think it represents a much bigger shift in the web development paradigm than it seems at first glance. Compressing the zope database and remote updates..

Well, firstly I must say that Zope 2.0.0 is so far proving itself a wonderful system, quite refreshing in its ability to create stunning results from a bit of carefull work. One thing I would like to know, is there a method of 'compressing' the ZODB3 database (Data.fs from memory) - ie: making it forget all the old undo versions held internally, and reduce to the minimum required contents for the system as it currently is? Another idea I would love to see is a method of doing a minimum-content transfer from one system to another, ie: I have a running server (the main system) in one location, I have a slowish link to this, and run a copy of the zope system on my local devel machine to allow for fast changes. It would be great to be able to just transfer the minimum changes to the remove ZODB3 database through a net link, rather than compress, transfer, and uncompress the whole db.. I would think with all the versioning systems in place a process could be written to do this via the normal interfaces into the databases???? virtual ISP (verio) and Zope

I have Verio as an internet service provider and I wanted to find out if I could run zope with my existing account. I think they are Apache and Sun 5.6 I have done some light Perl programming and light UNIX and want to give Zope a try. Q: Can I run Zope without affecting my existing web pages (to make a transition)? Q: Will installing Zope cause problems with my current site? I assume I need to install Zope and run the Zserver for this to work. If Zserver doesn't work will I screw up my site? This, I'm afraid, is a big problem. Trying to get a dumb object system (FTP) to play with a smart object system (the web object model) is quite problematic. I can tell you the basic idea we have around here to address this, but I'll warn that there is no activity to implement. Thus, consider this a suggestion, and I'll note that patches are accepted. :^) Basically, one proposal allows _all_ objects to have a discoverable XML interface via FTP. You walk up to a Folder. You see a special folder, perhaps "mgmt". You go into that folder and you see a bunch of things that look like files, such as "addFolder.xml". You GET that "file", edit it. When you save it, Zope makes the appropriate change. The benefit here is that you can express all kinds of metadata. You certainly can manipulate all the built-in classes (folders, etc.), but you can also grab Python products and ZClass products. You can also get at the interface to edit properties, change security settings, etc. In some cases this interface could be more convenient that the current one. For instance, you edit a "listAllDTMLDocuments.xml" file that contained an XML representation of all the folder's DTML Documents. You could then do a global search and replace using standard Emacs/XEmacs tools. Alternatively, you could create a .xml "file" that let you add ten things at one time. Essentially you take stupid files, find a way to express richer semantics (XML), then use this to script the Zope object system. Just my $0.02. Sending AUTHENTICATED_USER to the SQLMethods, IMO, makes testing a PITA since you're likely to be logged in as superuser and there are no superuser records in your database. Using user_id/username as Anthony mentioned let's me hijack the call without hassling with another browser session, etc.. In addition, I find there are other instances where I'll need info on some other user. If I've wired the SQL to AUTHENTICATED_USER, I either (a) can't ask the question or (b) end up duplicating (ick). --Rob
