It took longer than I thought, thanks partly to a nasty stomach flu, but I've taken the first step in creating a PythonMethod Product. http://www.zope.org:18200/Members/4am/PythonMethod has the nitty-gritty. I'm satisfied with the performance of SafeBlock; Rough testing (available at the site) indicates that loading from ZODB is comparable in speed to DTML, and execution is an order of magnitude faster. Next step is to wrap this up in a Product, and think about what exactly 'import' should do in PythonMethod code.

ZCatalog 'or-ing' results

Hi, There was a discussion back when ZCatalog alpha was announced about or-ing the search results. The specific application in mind was being able to take one search term from a user and search for it in title, summary and text_content. This, IMHO, is a pretty important thing in terms of getting a search engine going on a site. There was a bit of discussion about query languages. I'm keen on seeing something happen sooner than later when it comes to searching. Apparently, there is already some functionality implemented for taking the union of result sets. Perhaps a really simple scheme could be implemented. Something like "REQUEST.set('search', [{'metatype' : 'KMArticle', 'title' : search_string}, {'metatype' : KMArticle', 'text_content' : search_string}, {'metatype' : 'KMArticle', 'summary' : search_string}])"... A bit verbose and not as general as a query language, perhaps, but it seems like this might be easy to implement based on functions that already exist... Has there been any work with this to get Search going on the new Zope.org site? Am I missing something that is in the code already? Kevin

Those are important) Ah, I missed the quotes previously. I just tested it and it works great. Thank you. Definitely better than the nested 'with's too. I've been playing with Zope all night and morning. It's pretty good for prototyping. But it's becoming a bit crowded in the root directory where I have over 30 common elements (ranging from database connections to navigation menus to javascripts and stylesheets). I can see this becoming an organisational nightmare for very large sites. It would be great to have the following folder structure + common_elements + javascripts + images + stylesheets + database_connectors + navigation_menus + folderA + folderB But I can't work out how to reference the objects inside the subfolders of the 'common_elements' folder accessible by the documents in folderA and folderB. Unless I put <dtml-with common_elements> into the standard_html_header and </dtml-with> in the standard_html_footer but this will fail if I wish to over-ride standard_html_header in folderA or folderB. It also pollutes the namespace unnecessarily for documents inside folderA that do not actually require the common elements. Does anyone have any recommendations for organizing folders and common elements as above ? ZCatalog: sorting on TextIndexed fields?

Hi, I noticed that ZCatalog features a "sort-on" parameter, allowing you to sort using a given index. It looks like this only works for FieldIndexes and not TextIndexes, is that correct? I was specifically thinking of sorting on title (which seems like a common thing to do), but title is, appropriately enough, a TextIndex... Kevin

What's the preferred way to change a property. Eg say I have a property count and I want to increment this each time the object is viewed. I've tried various constructs like <dtml-call count="count+1"> ....</dtml-let>, but the count always goes back to the original value. -- Robin Becker

Newbie Alert ! Sorry for my stupid questions but I am stuck on the basic things and I have read the documents many times. #1. The default standard_html_footer has this inside <p></p> Where is ZopeAttributionButton defined ? I can not find the image object anywhere. Also, where is the variable URL1 defined in the default index_html ? Sorry, I know these are stupid questions and not very important. #2. I want to put all of my images in a folder called "images". If I place that code inside the root index_html after the standard_html_header then view the page, I get a "save as" popup as if the content type is wrong ! Also, how would I access the contents of subfolders of subfolders ? <dtml-with foldername/subfolder> or <dtml-with foldername.subfolder> ? #3. I wanted to use Zope with MSIIS on NT. The installation instructions for windows say that choosing to install as a service will let me specify the scripts folder of my web server. This did not happen. And there is no zope.cgi created either ! Did this change in version 2 ? #4. Before I try to install Zope on my Solaris workstation, I need to know whether uninstallation will involve simply deleting the folder ? #5. How do you add Javascript events to images ? For example, for rollovers ? #6. How are people arranging their folders ? It looks like the base folder will be just too full of common elements for the website. For example, if my navigation tree is like this + Products + Catalog + Promotions + Services + Support + Helpdesk + OurCompany + CommonElements + Images + DatabaseConnectors I understand that a dtml document or dtml method can use objects in higher directories. For example, a dtml document in Products/Catalog can use a dtml method inside Products But just say I wanted to use an image within CommonElements/Images within a dtml document in Support/Helpdesk (or anywhere in the site), is that possible ? Similarly for Database connectors. I don't want to pollute the root folder with all of the images, methods and database connectors that are common to all pages. Sorry for so many questions. I really have read the documents many many times but can not work this out. When will ODBC be available for Zope2?

All the zope work I'm doing relies heavily on Access databases. Until the ODBC connector gets upgraded I am can't really explore the wounderful new world of ZClasses, ZCatalogs etc. Anyone have a date for me?

Squishdot question

Hi, I'm new to Zope, so please forgive if this is a stupid question. What I am trying to do is the following: I have a site with an embedded SquishDot Folder called 'News'. This folder is linked to the main page. Now I want to get links to the headlines of the most recent News-entries embedded in the index_html document of the main page. I tried to create a DTML-method in the 'News' folder, which returns links to the articles. If I call this method inside the News folder I get what I want. BUT, how do call this method from the parent folder? I tried , which gives me a 'KeyError' on 'headlines'. The 'in' tag expects a list. If you want to get a list that contains the objects in a Folder, you could do something like this:    ....your code here    The DTML guide talks about this in more detail...
