Zope and Frontier

Hi again, I'm a longtime Frontier user and now a Zope newbie. My initial interest with Zope is how it works together with Frontier, though I can see lots of other things I'd like to try in Zope as well. I'm not sure how much experience you all have with Frontier. But if anyone has tried to do work with Frontier, or has any experience in making the two products dance well together, I'd be interested in your stories. Thanks in advance, Phil

Pam, First, you're not going to like this part, but I got two replies from people pointing out that FrameMaker isn't accessable to your volunteer collaborators. I concur. You might want to explore options that would make it easier for them, such as some form of SGML. I haven't used Frame in 5 years and thus am not familiar with the file formats it can handle. Here's a patch for ZCMG.8.html, but obviously you'd have to get these changes into the frame source. I think all of them would come up if you ran the spell checker. Scalability of Zope

Hi, I'm a Zope newbie. I've done some searches in the archives on 'scalability'. I'm currently evaluating Zope for possible use in a high traffic situation. I have seen discussion on the multithreadedness of ZODB3 (in Zope 2), which is good news. What other issues or concerns are there with Zope in regards to scalability? How have people been setting up Zope, and what's the largest Zope installation that you know of (in terms of machines, database size, and traffic)? I like what I see in Zope and hope it will be useful for my applications. Thanks for your help! Philip Suh

I have a site with the following structure: index_html Folder1 Folder2 ... ZServer streaming output

I've been comparing the streaming output of ZServer and ZopeHTTPServer , and come across two disadvantages related to the way ZServer buffers writes in memory. Firstly if the output is created faster than the client can consume it then the Zope process grows to accomodate the buffer. If the streamed output is large then this may not be appropriate. Secondly, there seems to be no convenient way to abort the method if the client disconnects part way through receiving the streamed output. With ZopeHTTPServer in this situation, RESPONSE.write would raise an exception. Is there anyway to recover some of the old behaviour under ZServer?

If you look at the target URL when you create an object, it looks something like: /myFolder/manage_addProduct/OFSP/folderAdd The 'manage_addProduct' method of ObjectManagers is actually a FactoryDispatcher object that masquerades as a method. It implements the trickery to find the right product and constructor, etc. The upshot is that when you actually submit the add form for an object, it is submitted to a constructor that is several levels deeper in the URL hierarchy than the actual destination where you are creating the new object. It is going through the destination object, a factory dispatcher, and the factory for the object itself to get to the object constructor. The constructor, of course, often wants to use the 'self' object, and expects it to be the parent object that the new object will be living in. However, as you can see above, the 'self' that you see in your external method is very likely going to actually be the _Factory_ object (which actually contains the constructor). Because of that, you need to set 'self' to the actual destination where the object will be living - we used to call self.Destination() to get that object, but the this() method has been made an alias for the old Destination() method. Using "self=self.this()" in your external method will set 'self' to the actual destination object. While this may be kind of unintuitive, it is a necessary evil that you have to set the destination to the right thing yourself, because your constructor may want to use attributes of the Product itself. For example, above, you created your ZClass above with the line: # Create the new instance newob=self.Control_Panel.Products.Foo.foo(id) It would be better in this case (to avoid hard coding product names and locations) to use 'self' in its initial context (the factory), and defer setting self to this() until after you are done using attributes of the Product/ Factory: def addFoo(self, id='a_obj', REQUEST=None): """ """ # Create the new instance.
