ZClasses 'problemette'

Hi all, I'm trundling through Amos' new tutorial on ZClasses and I've found something a little weird. I'm trying to change the properties on an existing CDClass Instance called mycd. I'm using a DTML Method (tried it with a DTML Document too with the same results) and the entire contents of it is:    It's in the same folder as mycd as well. Trouble is when I 'view' this document, it sets the title property of the *folder* to 'A slight case of overbombing'. I've checked this out by making a new property of the enclosing folder called 'description' and the same thing happens. NewsGroups vs mailing list vs ?

Hi, It's quiet on the list these days. Before the storm of Zope 2? Ok, a while ago, we had a discussion about a newsgroup or mailing list. Then I proposed to use something similar like www.experts-exchange.com . I'm wondering what other people think about. I think it's a good clear way of managing things. If you look at E-E, you know what I mean We could create such thing ourselfs, but not using the points-system etc. What do you think? Next, I'm wondering if creative Python Experts are working on some tools which might see the daylight soon... Is it possible to let us know about these tools? Tom.

DateTime problem

Hi all, I've fixed this problem as per last week and posted a patch on the Collector. Furthermore the above just won't work on 1.11.0pr1 -- which I'm not complaining about, waiting to upgrade to Zope 2.0. _However_, I would like to reiterate that I don't think it's the document's responsibility to send a correct LM header. Zope (or ZServer) should return an 304 error if the browser requests a document that has not been modified. This scheme isn't compatible at all with what you guys are suggesting. Why? When, in the future, we'll have good HTTP/1.1 support in Zope/ZServer, the browser passes an If-Modified-Since header, Zope will compare the date/time to the internal modification stamp on the object. If the document is old, Zope will return an 304 (Not Modified) response. In other words, the document will never be rendered and the code to call RESPONSE.setHeader() will never be executed. What's weird about IE 5.0, by the way, is that it uses Last-Modified to determine whether its cached copy is more recent than the one returned by the server, even though the server returns the whole document anyway instead of a 304 (which, btw, is what Zope does), which, when you think about it, is a little strange but sort of efficient, since the browser can just ignore the data and subsitute its own cached data, even if the document returned by the server is technically different/newer. Correction: Tested with 1.10.2. Under 1.11.pr1 I can't even get the Zope-distributed ZGadflyDA to work (known bug?), let alone the latest version of Gadfly. Has ZGadflyDA been updated to 2.0? Losing the right to be anonymous

So I am working for this professor, and he wants a temporary file drop location for students to put their class assignments on the server. I say: Zope. (of course). No worrying about network protocols. Accessible from anywhere there is a browser, secure, etc, etc. Plus, removing the users and files later on would be just a few clicks... Magic! I set the professor up as Manager of a Zope folder, and under that folder, I set-up some folders for the students. They have individual Manager rights in their subfolders, so all they have to do is upload their files, and all I have to do is put together a few lines of DTML making appropriate links in a document in the upper folder to nicely display the files in the student folders. The problem is that once a student has logged in as Manager of a subfolder and added their files, they cannot view the public interface in the professor's folder until they quit and restart the web browser. By logging in as a manager of a subfolder, they lose rights to view stuff they could view "anonymous"-ly. This is with Zope-1.10.3b1, but 2.0a3 seems to have the same behavior. I had never noticed this before. Then again, I am always using Zope as Manager from the top level. or purely anonymously. Anyway, this could be a word of warning for similar situations or a bug report or a request for suggestions how I could have done this better. Redirect methods, Zserver vs. Apache

Thanks for the input/discussion on virtual hosts, ZServer vs. Apache, and the two methods I can think of to support different virtual hosts with Zope on the same machine. The resource usage I'm most interested in is memory, not processor time. It would appear that a threaded Zserver could replace my anonymous FTP daemon, Apache, and a set of custom site-building scripts with a constantly running instance of Python. A threaded and interpreted approach is my first choice; if it weren't so expensive I would be using Roxen with SiteBuilder even though it lacks the object orientation of Zope. The machine serving my web sites does not have unlimited memory, and I think it's ridiculous to expect an ISP's machine to run tens or hundreds of copies of a process no matter how well the OS can deal with it. So, assuming that I want to take the risk of going with the newer ZServer included with 2.x alpha, how do I best go about enhancing it to support my needs, and increasing the chances of a stable site? I assume using it with older versions of other components would help, as would learning about the interface between ZServer and the publisher. I'm interested in redirecting different virtual domains into (a) seperate Zope processes or (b) different branches of the Zope tree. (b) sounds more interesting to me for reasons of resource usage and sharing of elements between several sites. Roxen had some interesting characteristics related to plugging in network service "modules" that could handle things like proxy caching, FTP service, and enhanced HTML processing. Is this similar to Zope's products combined with Medusa as a framework for network services? Roxen's implementation was buggy or incomplete but looked promising.

Building Zope 1.10.3 on FreeBSD

Hi, I want to install Zope on a Virtual Server for evaluation and possible incorporation into a project that I am working on. But the installation is quite a headache. I installed and built the source of Python 1.5.1. I installed and built the source of Zope 1.10.3. Well, I tried to build it but when I ran the command "python w_pcgi.py" within my Zope directory, it choked. As far as I can tell, the gcc of the Components/ExtensionClass/ExtensionClass.c failed pretty badly (I got a bunch of "undefined symbol"s). Has anyone had this problem?
