Hi all, I just subscribed, so please be gentle ... :-) Im trying to get zope going w/ apache on a FreeBSD 2.2.8 system. I went thru the zope mailing archives and wasn't able to come up with something. Maybe someone could whack me with a clue stick... Whenever I try to invoke /cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/manage I get the "Temporarily Unavailable" response with a "(102) failure during connect" The HTML source say's "Interupted system call pcgi-wrapper version 2.0a5" pcgi.log says "pcgi-wrapper: Interrupted system call (102) Failure during connect" Along with that, python exits on a signal 11 and dumps core. Looks like you've already done the hard part! All you should have to do is stop and restart Zope. Go to the control panel and you should see a "Shutdown" button that does exactly as it says. Depending on your setup Zope may restart automagically one the next HTTP request. This is the case from the Linux/Apache/Zope system I'm running quite happily from home. At work I'm running NT/ZServer/Zope with ZServer running in a command window. Here I have to manually restart ZServer because it exits out when Zope quits. If everything is set up okay you should now see Squishdot objects appearing in the add item pulldown on the manage screens. Make any sense? Good luck... torture.pl for performance testing

Just catching up with the last weeks worth of messages and saw the discussion about zope performance, and thought I would point people to torture.pl. Lincoln Stein (the guy who wrote CGI.pm) has written a perl script for torture testing web servers. The July issue of Web Techniques has an article, written by Stein, about the script on page 67. Simple and useful. The code and the text of the article can be found online here: http://stein.cshl.org/~lstein/torture/ Here's the first few paragraphs of the article: This script has two functions. First, it can be used to test the speed and responsiveness of a Web server. Second, the script can be used to test the stability and reliability of a particular Web server. When used for performance testing, you can measure the speed and response time of your Web servers, CGI scripts, and other Web enhancements. Although torture.pl isn't rigorously normalized for cross-server comparisons the way the WebStone metric is, it's good for measuring changes on a single Web server. When used in torture-testing mode, torture.pl sends large amounts of random data to a server, trying to make it crash. Hi, when I run python z2.py -2 -w 2000 -f 2001 -u andreas -d 192.168.144.1 -m "" I get the following traceback, the transfer works only after huge delays (some select timeouts? *wonder*), AND the transfer rate is in the area of 20 Bytes/sec on a 100Mb LAN. Devolving the management of users

I can see how I create a role which allows a user to manage other users (and do nothing much else) at a particular folder level (and below). What I can't see is how to prevent a user with such a role creating another user with the "built-in" Manager role and then using this new account to gain any sort of permissions .... No matter what I do the Manager role always seems to be available in the Add user screen. Can this be suppressed? [Why do I want to do this? I want to devolve the management of usernames and passwords of a particular folder but without exposing the contents of other objects in the folders to tinkering .... I can guess I can ask the user(s) with the role not to do anything but reset passwords but you know how people get curious ....] TIA. So in order trigger a "modification" I actually have to go modify a dummy property? Okay. For now I'll "touch" pages by calling manage_changeProperties() on some dummy property, but in the long run this isn't good enough. I suggest adding a touch() method that lets you update the time stamp programmatically. Why? Well, in my case I have a front page which uses an SQL database for news, articles, and various things. Whenever an editor posts an article (through a Zope-built management interface), the front page should be "touched"; otherwise Zope will give the wrong Last-Modified date to the browser, and all users will see is the old page. Security: Displaying text based on user permission

hi all, I want to be able to create a dtml page where some of the text is only visible to certain Roles of user (Anonymous, Manager, etc). For example:  super secret text  I am learning Zope quickly but am still know. I know Python fairly well. Any ideas? thanks, Michael Wang-Helmke

Patch for a Database Adapter expireCache

Hi Zopistas, attached is a very simple patch for a expireCache method for Database Adapters. You should apply it to lib/python/Shared/DC/ZRDB/DA.py The idea is to be able to set very long cache values for ZSQL methods. You should call self.zsqlmethodname.expireCache() after inserting data in your DB.
