Using Wildcards with ZTables Searches

Hi all, I uploaded a Database to the Zope Server with the tabula creation assistent. I added a search form but when i try search for incomplete terms with and without wildcards it fails. Can you help me? Ciao, Alex

Rewrites in Apache and Zope.cgi/manage

Hi I want to have a site manage.site.org that when accessed brings up the Zope manage interface, but I can't figure out how to do that. If I set the DocumentRoot to /usr/lib/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/manage I get not authorized but if I use a RewriteRule like ^/(.*) /usr/lib/cgi-bin/test.cgi/manage [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] I get authorized but I get like 10^10000 frames... I do have a bit of background in this, because I used to own an ISP. We have had occasional problems getting responsiveness from codeit, but nowhere near as bad as it used to be when we had our old connection. The old connection was slow or dead all the time, day or night. With Erols, our new provider, maybe two or three times a week, at about 2-3pm, for a few minutes, the response is slow. I write this off as bad Internet weather. Our old provider, however, just plain stank, and so did their provider, Cable and Wireless (cw.net) The thing about traceroutes is they're deceptive. From your perspective it looks like it's Exodus's fault, but where, really, is that packet getting dropped? Remember, traceroute's use ICMP, and ICMP 'dropped packet' datagrams are not generated for other ICMP datagrams. So it may look like an exodus router is unreachable or is dropping packets, when it was really a Cable and Wireless router that dropped the ICMP *reply*. There is really quite a bit of action going on, and no way to tell where the packes are really getting dropped. Sometimes, a router may seem 100% reachable when you ping (traceroute) it, but if you ping or traceroute *through* it, the chances or a packet getting droped increase alot. This makes it look like the problem is beyond that router, when it is really that router. If we ran a traceroute to *you*, I wouldn't doubt it if it looked exactly the opposite situation. So who's fault is it? It could be many things. I don't want to get into the problems with overload at NAP exchange points, and then there's the political issues: Provider X is sending much more packets over Y's network than Y is over X's, so Y throttles back their router to toss the difference and 'level' the 'field'. I do know these things: 1) Our old provider went through Cable and Wireless, and the access sucked *all the time*. 2) We now use Erols, and the access is good, *most of the time*. 3) Every and all exchange points (NAPs) on the Internet are 100%+ capacity during peak hours. 4) Traceroutes are deceptive for all measurements, except unidirectional hop counts (packets usualy never take the same way back because of 'hot potato' routing) 5) Only hosting networks who can afford multiple large pipes (45Mb+) to dispersed providers can boast near perfect availability all the time. Codeit has a 10Mb connection to Exodus. The provider I ran had two T1s (3Mb). The ** are not meant to be emphasized, but to be mark off as qualifiers, nothing is ever true all the time on the Internet. Do you dial in? If so, perhaps you can put some time into helping us reasearch this. Often, if you call up a dial up provider and say "hey, I need a really solid connection to this one site, can I just try you out for a day to see if your better than what I got"? They'll sign you up and let you cancel the next day without charging you. Make a deal. Make sure they don't use the same NSP (National Service Provider, ie Cable and Wireless) as you do. Now, try the access from the other provider. Your post isn't clear, but I assume you mean you connected an SQL database, and used the built in search forms. Most SQL servers accept a query of the form X like 'thus%' where percent is the same as * and underscore (_) is the same as ? in shell scripting. However, I have not used the built in search forms, so I don't know if they properly detect a '%' or '_' and switch to using like instead of equals. I doubt it, based on what I've read, so you'll probably have to rewrite the SQL queries. Howard C. Hello, I added search forms to my uploaded database but all i can search for are complete words. When i type something like "a*" he finds nothing. Is there a way to allow wildcard searches on a zope server? Any help would be appreciated. Ciao, Alex

Hi! Could I use DocumentTemplate without Zope and ZPublisher. I want to creat some HTML-Pages with Python. How could I do something like print "<body>" x = ['abc', 'def', 'ghi'] for i in x: print "<p>blabla: " + i + "</p>" print "</body>" with DTML? I read the DTML User's Guide, but I'm too stupid to understand... ;-)

Two years ago this, well, this week I suppose, we started rolling out a classified ad engine for a consortium of newspapers. It used a predecessor of the current software, something one hop before "Principia". Basically it was a bunch of newspapers which could have a bunch (2,000-18,000) of ads. The ads were full-text indexed which created index objects that were also stored in the database. Lots of index object in fact. This allowed undo to return the ads _and_ the index back to its original state, so we also had multiple versions of the ads/indices. Anyway, using an older version of the technology, they're doing about a hundred papers with an average of a 1.5mil ads loaded/indexed per week. A year ago they were doing a million hits a day. At one point (around 50 papers) their database sizes were getting over a Gb. (We encouraged more aggressive packing at that point. Zope2 will go a long way towards making object storage more confidence-inspiring through (a) change in format and (b) allowing storage in "safe" managers such as an RDBMS or bsddb. > At what point > does performance begin to degrade? The size of the database is certainly a problem for database operations. Packing will obviously get a lot slower the bigger the size of the database (I guess in Zope2 packing will happen in the background). Doing a Find will be a nightmare if you have a billion objects. Otherwise, well, it depends on your activity model. Fortunately I have the benefit of seeing what we are working on now and realizing how it will help. Anybody that goes to LinuxExpo will see it as well :^) Namely, the Catalog will leverage the indexing structures that are a hidden part of Zope and used in Z Tables. Effectively all content in your Zope site can choose to be registered in the Catalog. Meaning the act of finding something on your site based on criteria (full-text search, date modified, keyword, category, author, etc.) will be effectively instantaneous. I'll talk a little bit about Zope2 which (knock on wood) will be in beta at LinuxExpo next month. Well, rather than talk about it, go to www.zope.org/News and search for ODB. That will give you a link to the design docs for the next version of the database. As for load balancing, here's our current party line on this. We aren't actively working on it. I personally don't feel there's a one-size-fits-all solution. Moreover, I don't particularly think people will take a free, off-the-shelf solution for load balancing and bet their business on it. Customization will always be necessary. Thus I think there will be multiple answers for multiple situations. I'd like to get a technology partner to help us fund the work on some basic building blocks. Then have Digital Creations and others have some "above the line" software/consulting to solve specific problems. Just my $0.02. --Paul
