The status on this: we have written the first draft of the architecture document that moves everything atop Medusa and describes how the Medusa handlers and the thread pool will match up. And just because we provide an FTP publisher doesn't mean people have to turn it on. But many people _will_ want to turn it on. Maybe they are doing development behind a firewall or on their disconnected laptop. Or maybe they want to support all the market leading tools such as Dreamweaver that run on platforms that don't even have SSH file transfer, much less free SSH file transfer, much less SSH integrated into the tool. ("OK Mom, close Dreamweaver, launch SSH, and generate your RSA key. Attach it to an email and I'll add it to your authorized_keys file...") If you're doing Emacs, meaning you're smart :^), you'll get bulk copy, grep, the wonderful world of Ediff, and all other whizbang things that work with ange-ftp/EFS. And it will be more palatable than normal FTP because you won't be storing accounts in /etc/passwd. It still won't be paradigm-shifting like WebDAV will be. But that's OK. TEXTAREA must go and must go soon! For those of you that don't like the above scenario, THAT'S FINE, don't use it! This is open source, after all. Create something different, send us some patches and distributions and let's talk. Just DON'T respond by discouraging these initiatives. Respond by encouraging other initiatives. --Paul

As everyone knows, I'm a dunce at programming and usually make things worse when I intervene. But...I suggest you stay in Python and try to do the operations. Perhaps also use the debugger. You'll never find this error by publishing the object and using the web browser to debug it. I suspect that some state is missing and the object is having trouble being reincarnated. Try sitting in Python and grabbing the instance you created, perhaps doing an str on it to make it cough up some state. So I've got this product I'm working on... to manage all external references on a web site... I was having all kinds of problems, and here's the absolutely stripped down minimum, no frills, no real major functionality version of it, and here's the symptoms of it: * Can't view manage_main, get: The parameter, trueself, was omitted from the request. - how to validate access to an object..

Thank you for Zope. Yea! It is a thing of beauty! I have created a simple file repository with an explorer-style interface, search form and access control. It's like a much-simplified version of the management UI, whose code I have been staring at. This has helped a lot, as have the mailing list archives. My search form uses an external method which is similar to FindSupport.PrincipiaFind(). It has one problem - it lists files for which the user does not have view permission. The tree tag handles this well and I want to add a similar validate() check to my find method, but I cannot find the right magic! I am confused about the arguments and have found debugging difficult. Eg I cannot step into the external method. Any tips would be most welcome.. -Simon

Now to your point, I think you're on to something with "recorded" tutorials, though I don't like the videotape part. I've long used Lotus ScreenCam as a backup for making presentations. It allows me to "record" a screen session with all the screen events, as well as adding audio narration and captioning. Unfortunately the files it produces are gargantuan unless you take painful (read: unacceptable) measures to reduce it. An alternative is to buy Lotus StreamCam which streams the presentation, rather than downloading a huge (e.g. 20 Mb) file. I don't mind the plunking down the money, but ScreenCam is a finicky product. It can get the audio and video out of sync, it is a Windows-only solution, it talks directly to the display (in some cases installing its own video driver), doesn't support all video cards, etc. Thus I'd like to see if anyone here has alternative experience. I'd like something that: o Allowed me to record screen events with synchronized audio narration o Recordings are streamed in a bandwidth-friendly fashion o Players are available *at least* for Windows and Linux --Paul

- Apache's DSO and mod_rewrite.

Just simple question. Should I compile in mod_rewrite statically? On RedHat 5.2, I have httpd(apache) which configured to load dynamically rewrite_module. It fails to deliver authent header to Zope, always, even with the directives in WEBSERVER.txt in Zap doc directory. With "RewriteLog 9" directive, apache says it 'pass'es to Zope. It just seems OK for this unitniated httpd user. Yes, Zap works fine. BUT I do not want to use it. My(rather our) site goes through frequent "httpd restart", and having two (diffently configured )httpd's causes problem. So, I want the source of rewrite problem. Did I do something wrong or mod_rewrite must be compiled in staticall? Thanks, Kwan Soo.

- [Zope] in mailing list headers

Howdy All, Anybody have an opinion on the necessity of continuing to have [Zope] in the subject header? Originally in the switch from Bobo-list to Zope-list and duplication of messages it served a good purpose. The Bobo-list didn't and doesn't have an equivalent [Bobo] prefix. Most people have migrated to the Zope and the Bobo list is greatly reduced. I have seen messages such as: RE: [Zope] - RE: [Zope] -... "[Zope] - " minimally consumes 9 characters. Add a "re: " and your upto 13. This has caused some subjects to be cut. Is it still desired? I know this isn't any over-my-head-technical-subject but, any opinions? Jimmie Houchin
