Thank you for Zope. Yea! It is a thing of beauty! I have created a simple file repository with an explorer-style interface, search form and access control. It's like a much-simplified version of the management UI, whose code I have been staring at. This has helped a lot, as have the mailing list archives. My search form uses an external method which is similar to FindSupport.PrincipiaFind(). It has one problem - it lists files for which the user does not have view permission. The tree tag handles this well and I want to add a similar validate() check to my find method, but I cannot find the right magic! I am confused about the arguments and have found debugging difficult. Eg I cannot step into the external method. Any tips would be most welcome.. -Simon

As long as we keep improving it and applying more time in that direction, I expect it to provide the foothold people need to get started. Now to your point, I think you're on to something with "recorded" tutorials, though I don't like the videotape part. I've long used Lotus ScreenCam as a backup for making presentations. It allows me to "record" a screen session with all the screen events, as well as adding audio narration and captioning. Unfortunately the files it produces are gargantuan unless you take painful (read: unacceptable) measures to reduce it. An alternative is to buy Lotus StreamCam which streams the presentation, rather than downloading a huge (e.g. 20 Mb) file. I don't mind the plunking down the money, but ScreenCam is a finicky product. It can get the audio and video out of sync, it is a Windows-only solution, it talks directly to the display (in some cases installing its own video driver), doesn't support all video cards, etc. Thus I'd like to see if anyone here has alternative experience. I'd like something that: o Allowed me to record screen events with synchronized audio narration o Recordings are streamed in a bandwidth-friendly fashion o Players are available *at least* for Windows and Linux --Paul

Just simple question. Should I compile in mod_rewrite statically? On RedHat 5.2, I have httpd(apache) which configured to load dynamically rewrite_module. It fails to deliver authent header to Zope, always, even with the directives in WEBSERVER.txt in Zap doc directory. With "RewriteLog 9" directive, apache says it 'pass'es to Zope. It just seems OK for this unitniated httpd user. Yes, Zap works fine. BUT I do not want to use it. My(rather our) site goes through frequent "httpd restart", and having two (diffently configured )httpd's causes problem. So, I want the source of rewrite problem. Did I do something wrong or mod_rewrite must be compiled in staticall? Thanks, Kwan Soo.

Well I thought I could be clever and use ModRewrite in Apache to do virtual servers within Zope. So I used the rewrite: RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/(.*) /opt/Web/Zope/Zope.cgi/IndyExploring/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORI ZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] And it sort of worked except I noticed Zope keeps putting a BASE HREF statement in the header that uses the full path :-( How are other people doing this? -- Jonathan Bradshaw (Jonathan(a)NrgUp.Com) | Novell 4.x CNE | Ham Callsign N9OXE "...I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. - [Zope] in mailing list headers

Howdy All, Anybody have an opinion on the necessity of continuing to have [Zope] in the subject header? Originally in the switch from Bobo-list to Zope-list and duplication of messages it served a good purpose. The Bobo-list didn't and doesn't have an equivalent [Bobo] prefix. Most people have migrated to the Zope and the Bobo list is greatly reduced. I have seen messages such as: RE: [Zope] - RE: [Zope] -... "[Zope] - " minimally consumes 9 characters. Add a "re: " and your upto 13. This has caused some subjects to be cut. Is it still desired? I know this isn't any over-my-head-technical-subject but, any opinions? Jimmie Houchin

- Product API tutorial updated

Hi guys: I've got a new version of the Product API Tutorial on-line at: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Reference/Tutorial So now you can read it without downloading the whole thing. Of course, you can still download it along with sample files and a completed sample Product at: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Reference/ProductTutorial.tar.gz The tutorial has been updated a little to clean up language and add some discussion of project requirements and analysis, and now comes with an HTML as well as a text version. It isn't complete, but Amos is working on documenting some more of the features (e.g. mailto and relative URLs, footnotes, etc.) For more examples of stuff written as StructuredText, take a look at the module docstrings in a lot of the code. Jim particularly writes his stuff as StructuredText. Also, for a *gargantuan* example, take a look at Amos' all-singing, all-dancing Tutorial.txt file in the Product sampler from yesterday. Now, to actually use it... >From the command line: python StructuredText.py SomeFile.txt will read SomeFile.txt and write HTML to stdout. So: python StructuredText.py SomeFile.txt > SomeFile.html creates an HTML file. There is also a -t switch that changes the way the HTML is structured: python StructuredText.py -t SomeFile.txt > SomeFile.html There are other ways to use it, such as getting it to produce MML for Frame rather than HTML. To use it in Zope, create a Document, say SomeDoc.txt and refer to it from the HTML version of the doc. For instance:    For those of you that want to know *why* you might like StructuredText, here are my reasons: o Much, much easier to write than HTML o You can author something usable in an email, in a README file in a distribution, or as HTML o Emacs text-mode makes working with it a breeeeze I write just about everything as StructuredText these days. There are caveats though: o not surprisingly, we haven't done a good job of documenting it o it has some quirks that can make it misfire on the HTML o you sometimes finding yourself not wanting to live within its confines o requires you to use the object database (no, just kidding :^) So, chalk it up as another option at your disposal.
