I don't know much of anything about coding on windows, but I had looked at doing something smiliar once ... To convert PPT's on demand to HTML in my case, but I looked at using Python's COM features to do it (Regular Python + win32all, not ActiveState's). One thing that stopped me dead in my tracks was many comments form Microsoft that all the Office related COM objects are NOT re-entrant. Therefore Excel.Application can only exist once and so on, and you have to take care with such issues ... This is why nonbody's written an MS Office based Web Service :) You're not really using it as a web service, but the same concecpt applies I think? Basically, I'd look at object re-entrancy and concurency issues on the MS Office side. I ended up never needing mine, but I think I'd had it down to the fact that the best was to have the Application instance running and use Document instances to do the work ... Thing is I really didn't want to have PowerPoint instanciated permanently on the server. The really strange thing is that the error seems to be random. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't been able to determine any rhyme or reason to it. When I restart Zope, it will work one to as many as 10 times. Then I'll get the error message. If I keep trying the same URL, it might eventually work or I may have to restart Zope to get it working again. Does anyone have any idea as to what's going on here? Integrating Zope with Excel.

I've got some financial reports that the user can browse through using a web interface. What I'm trying to do is have a link on the page that will download the report they're viewing into a local Excel worksheet. I don't use Mysql ... And I use Zope 2.7.2 with Python 2.3.3. But I have the RH7.3 with the same kernel ... On a 4 CPU machine. I DID tweak the interpreter lock timing to try and improve performance ... (Related to the GIL). I used the guidlines from: http://www.zope.org/Members/glpb/solaris/report_ps I have to admit I never truly benchmarked it, I just noticed it seemed to perform better. I'm not really spending too much time on it, as my focus now is to use single CPU machines for all things Zope/Python. I've never noticed any unexplained "bursty" performance, we i do have it, it's usually due to traffic, bursts of requests, and so on ... Today for instance I've been averaging 10 hits/sec and the site is nice and fast. With a 2 cpu machine you're less likely to feel the effects of the GIL issue ... In your case I don't know what I'd suspect ... You might have to figure out exactly which requests/threads run for too long and figure out what they have in common. (Which you can normally figure out just by looking at the debugging screen). If worst comes to worst, do some profiling? Performance problems after upgrade

I upgraded from mysql-3.23.56-1.9 to mysql--4.0.20-0 using the mysql.org RPMS, from Zope 2.6.2b3 (Python 2.1.3) to Zope 2.6.4 (Python 2.3.4) under Linux RH7.3 with kernel 2.4.20-28.7. Host is a dual Athalon processor with 4GB of memory, 3ware RAID (configured as RAID 10) and not much else. Performance is way down from the earlier configuration with "bursty" slowdowns. There is some evidence that it is somehow related to redirection in the Zope application, but we have not been able to locate the problem. Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem? Problem with License of Zope Book

Hi, you might know that the "famous" Zope Book is available as Debian package to increase the comfort of the Debian users and to make this fine work pupular in the Debian world. You might have heard that there is some trouble with license of documentation in Debian and this trouble now has hit the Open Publication License and thus the Zope Book package. This is explained at http://bugs.debian.org/266417 The problem is explained in Detail at http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/Position_Statement.html to make clear why Debian can not distribute documentation with licenses which are not compliant to the Debian Free Software Guidelines. I have to admit that I personally do not really understand these issues and just do foreward this information to you. A short resume of it might be: Just put the documentation under the same license as the software. The same is true for the Zope Development Guide: http://bugs.debian.org/266414 So if you - especially the authors of the documentation - have certain reasons to stick to the license you have choosen, I would have to move these two packages to the non-free section of the Debian mirrors. Hello, I have seen this in an example to redirect from a Script to a Page Template: return container.index_html(REQUEST) It seems like this sends the REQUEST variable to the index_html. I would like to use return context.REQUEST.RESPONSE.redirect(getattr(context,"add.html").absolute_url()) because there is a point character in my id (add.html). Does the "context.REQUEST.RESPONSE.redirect" send the REQUEST variable to my add.html, too? Or do I have to send an object id with this redirect like: return context.REQUEST.RESPONSE.redirect(getattr(context,"add.html").absolute_url()) + "?id=" + myID Can anybody help?

Thanks Tim, I definitely understand your point and knowing about these issues is certainly useful. Maybe mentioning the unit tests muddied my original question. My practical reality is a production environment in which a number of applications are already in heavy use, running happily against python2.3.2. I want to run an up-to-date Zope2 that can talk to these applications (i.e. as a frontend utility), without the considerable block of setting up a whole new python build and upsetting the otherwise-placid state of affairs. What's confusing, though not exactly critical, is why source distributions seem to allow for some leeway as far as which python version you build Zope onto, but binaries have this less forgiving posture. The less-forgiving approach implies that Zope will not work with an earlier py version, but that doesn't exactly seem to be the case (it works, just 'sub-optimally'). In one sense this wasn't surprising, because Python's cyclic gc had no knowledge of Python's weakref objects. It does now. When weakrefs with callbacks become part of cyclic garbage now, those weakrefs are cleared first. The callbacks don't trigger then, preventing the problems. If you need callbacks to trigger, then just as when cyclic gc is not involved, you need to write your code so that weakref objects outlive the objects they weakly reference. - Critical bugfix, for SF bug 840829: if cyclic garbage collection happened to occur during a weakref callback for a new-style class instance, subtle memory corruption could result (in a release build; in a debug build, a segfault occurred reliably very soon after). This has been repaired. - At Python shutdown time (Py_Finalize()), 2.3 called cyclic garbage collection twice, both before and after tearing down modules. The call after tearing down modules has been disabled, because too much of Python has been torn down then for __del__ methods and weakref callbacks to execute sanely. The most common symptom was a sequence of uninformative messages on stderr when Python shut down, produced by threads trying to raise exceptions, but unable to report the nature of their problems because too much of the sys module had already been destroyed. There are more in 2.3.4: - Fixed problem where PyWeakref_NewRef() and PyWeakref_NewProxy() assumed that initial existing entries in an object's weakref list would not be removed while allocating a new weakref object. Since GC could be invoked at that time, however, that assumption was invalid. In a truly obscure case of GC being triggered during creation for a new weakref object for an referent which already has a weakref without a callback which is only referenced from cyclic trash, a memory error can occur. This consistently created a segfault in a debug build, but provided less predictable behavior in a release build. - Fixed a bug in object.__reduce_ex__ when using protocol 2. Failure to clear the error when attempts to get the __getstate__ attribute fail caused intermittent errors and odd behavior. You're insane if you think you want to track down one of those nightmares yourself all over again <wink>.
