ANN: VarImage 2.3.2 Released
by Terry Hancock 21 Jun '04

21 Jun '04

Version 2.3.2 includes the large cache-optimization patch written by Eric Pollman which reportedly can improve performance by 10X or more in certain test conditions. I have tested it on Zope 2.5.1 and Zope 2.6.4 (on FreeBSD and Debian Linux platforms, respectively), but it probably works on later Zopes and any platform on which PIL is available. This also fixes a bug with handling width and height attributes, should they be set to strings instead of ints, which avoids some annoying editing problems. Get it from the Narya project at SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/narya-project Cheers, Terry From the README.txt file: VarImage 2.3 VarImage means "variable image". It provides a way to make on-the-fly modifications to an image in Zope simply by referring to the correct URL. [...] Syntax The URL-command is parsed as a chain of "operations" to be applied to the original image, separated by "." (period). Each operation is specified as an "operator", followed by zero or more "arguments", separated by "_". Arguments and operators must be composed of only letters and numbers ([A-Za-z0-9], note that "_" and "." are not legal because they are used as separators). Other than the fact that floating point values have to use "o" (the letter "o") instead of "." for the decimal point, this works well. Colors are represented by strings, usually as hexadecimal codes, with a prefix of "x" and 6 hexadecimal characters. Component images may be referred to by their unadorned Zope ID, so "myimage/components/mycomponent" is simply "mycomponent". Note that, to be useful, you have to use only letters and numbers in the name of components. Each operation is applied in sequence, to the result of the previous operation, and then the final result is returned. Examples If you have a VarImage "shinobu_jpg", you can get it in an exact size of 100x100 (regardless of the original aspect):: shinobu_jpg/s_100 or 100x50:: shinobu_jpg/s_100_50 or you can thumbnail it into a 70x50 space (the longer dimension will be determined by the specified limit, while the smaller is determine by the image aspect ratio -- i.e. the image will "fit" into the available 70x50 space):: shinobu_jpg/f_70_50 or you can set the horizontal or vertical dimensions:: shinobu_jpg/h_85 shinobu_jpg/v_100 (The above examples are converted from the Version 1 docs). You can also convert the image to PNG or GIF format:: shinobu_jpg/tn_100.png shinobu_jpg/tn_100_200.gif And do color effects, such as black-and-white:: shinobu_jpg/bw or color-multiplication:: shinobu_jpg/mult_x0e5f00.png shinobu_jpg/bw.R.gif Special Commands For a help page with a complete list of all currently understood operators, use:: shinobu_jpg/help If you need to clear the cache and start over for some reason (this is necessary a lot when you're writing a new plugin):: shinobu_jpg/clear_cache [...] How It Works VarImage inherits from Zope's Image and ObjectManager types, so it is an image that also acts as a folder. The folder contains a Temporary Folder named "cache". When you query for a modified image, it first checks to see if the cache already contains the image. If so, it returns that. Otherwise, it uses Python Imaging Library to generate the image, and stores the result in the cache. [...] Writing Plugins It is now trivial to add a plugin operator to VarImage, and you do not need any understanding of Zope to do this. You will need to understand how to manipulate and process images in Python. [...] Author and Licensing Terry Hancock wrote VarImage for Anansi Spaceworks. It may be redistributed under the terms of the Gnu Public License. The full text of the GPL is in the file LICENSE.txt in this distribution. -- Terry Hancock ( hancock at anansispaceworks.com ) Anansi Spaceworks http://www.anansispaceworks.com

The action attribute would be 'results.html' as I suppose it already is. This seems to be an HTML question, not a Zope one. Cheers, Tom P

With all this talk about the zope list accepting any email I've been trying to figure out why my message is still not delivered. To: zope(a)zope.org Reply-To: <zope(a)zope.org> I've done something similar to give local users a url and off campus users a url that authenticates the user through the proxy server. At the top of the page I call a python script that receives the REMOTE_ADDR and splits it on the dots and then checks the first two octets of the IP address. If both match then a flag is set to true otherwise it is false. I think I recall getting a script from the Zope Cookbook and used only the part I needed. Redirecting Search Result
by Michael A. Ruberto 21 Jun '04

21 Jun '04

Hi, I have a Zcatalog search very similar to the one in the Zope book. the page with the search form is in the top frame of a 2 frame page. the code for it was generated by the ZSearch Interface: <form action="results.html" method="get"> Enter query parameters:<br><table> <tr><th>SearchTextIdx</th> <td><input name="searchTextIdx" width=30 value=""></td></tr> <tr><td colspan=2 align=center> <input type="SUBMIT" name="SUBMIT" value="Submit Query"> I would like to have results.html display in the bottom frame instead of the top frame where the search form is. after much looking for answers on zope.org and elsewhere it appears there is not a shred of howto available to help me here. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions - and no I cannot put the search form in the bottom frame ;-) THANKS!!!! Michael A. Ruberto DORTRONICS SYSTEMS INC.

FW: [Zope] RE: [Zope-dev] Prohibiting Spams on the List

Sorry about the last post, I intended to send it to the list, not just Tim. -----Original Message----- From: Samir Mishra Sent: Monday, June 21, 2004 08:09 To: 'Tim Peters' Subject: RE: [Zope] RE: [Zope-dev] Prohibiting Spams on the List Have you seen http://tmda.net/? Another option may be to allow only subscriber addresses, and all users of/with alternate addresses should be directed to the gmane.org site. I sympathize. And agree, holding emails for review is not a realistic option. -----Original Message----- From: Tim Peters [mailto:tim@zope.com] Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2004 05:10 To: phil(a)xfr.co.uk Cc: zope-dev(a)zope.org; 'Mohsen Moeeni'; zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [Zope] RE: [Zope-dev] Prohibiting Spams on the List [Philip Kilner] > ... > Does Mailman have a "nomail" facility that subscribers could set > /themselves/ on secondary accounts? There are different versions of Mailman (of course), but at least recent ones offer this. If you go to your personal list subscription page on the web, a checkbox to suspend delivery is the first of the listed checkbox options. That seems a reasonable workaround to me. As to why this comes up, I expect my own case is typical: I have 6 POP3 accounts with various providers. I can retrieve email from all of them when logged in with any of the providers, but SMTP access (for sending email) is often limited to the specific account I'm logged into. For example, I cannot use my Zope Corp SMTP account, or my Comcast SMTP account, when logged in to my MSN account from a dialup line in a hotel room. It doesn't matter whose "fault" that is (although I suspect it's MSN's ...), it's just the fact of the matter. I don't have dialup facilities thru Zope Corp or Comcast, so when I'm on the road and restricted to dialup access, I send mail via MSN or Hotmail, or not at all. I'm told that posting from my Hotmail account doesn't project a professional image <wink>. The same kind of thing happens on the one list I admin where non-member posts are held for review (this is the PSF Board mailing list, where non-member posts can be legitimate, e.g. a company asking about becoming a PSF sponsor). There are fewer than a dozen members on that list, and the legit traffic is usually light, so accommodating two or ten email addresses per member was a finite task there. > In gentler times, your concern would be wonderful - in the current > climate, you'll drown if you can't automate it. Save yourself, while you > can! > > ;-) If there's spam on Zope's mailing lists, I never see it(*), so my only stake in this is in a list-admin capacity. (*) I never see it because I started this project -- and it works <wink>: http://www.spambayes.org/ _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman-20/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman-20/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman-20/listinfo/zope-dev )
