RE: [Zope] Weighing catalog searches per index ?

Casey, Thanks for pointing out this product, I'll have to give it a try, as I can foresee many useful applications for it ! I'm working on the next generation of our site. Currently we use a regular TextIndex, which is obviously oversimplistic and insufficient. So right now I've been using ZCTextIndex through development, and it seems to give decent results (Hard to tell without getting some mass usage). Problem is some co-workers using different technologies have "weighing" and it sounds like something interesting, at least form the user perspective. Notably, we'd like to maybe experiment with giving the Title more priority over the rest, so that when someone views the search results with the titles, it's perceived as being relevant results. Also, if we have weighing, content could possibly be tweaked/adjusted to take that into account (Notably with Keywords). Your product seems to have a good base to start with. The problem now, and one that stopped me in my tracks, is how to define/calculate/configure this "weighing" concept. You suggest there's some underlying functionality for weighing already, maybe it'd just be a matter of taking advantage of it, and documenting how to use it ? The big question would be what does a weight of "1" MEAN versus a weight of "2" or "5" ? The other is how it gets purely implemented. Does the weight need to be known at indexing time, or can it be provided at search time ? My hunch is the weighing should be applied at search time, so your product could be modified to take as input the weights to apply to each index that is being search through ? Something like: result = catalog(dc_fields={"query":"Some search string", "fields":["Title", "Description"]}) could become: result = catalog(dc_fields={"query":"Some search string", "fields":["Title", "Description"], "weights":[5,1]}) Meaning apply a weight of 5 to Title, and 1 to Description. Which I would in turn interpret as meaning Title is 5 times more important than Description (Not knowing any better right now). Personally I'm using the Okapi algorithm. When I started investigating this, I came to the (admitedly uneducated) conclusion that to do proper, fast weighing, then the Okapi implementation would have to be modified to support this feature (Maybe it does already ??), which is over my head, especially with the okascore module being Python/C. Doing it in python would mean doing a second pass over the results that have already been scored once, which is innefficient it seems, and computationally intensive (Especially as I envision th efact that really really nice weighing algorythms would need to have all content in memory in order to do relational work between records). Anyways, that's what I've been thinking about ... But the benefits of having such a beast seem really tentalizing, so I thought I'd ask anyways ... Besides maybe I'm way out to left field on this and it's easier than I make it out to be ?! :) Thoughts ? Low-level support for this already exists via the weightedIntersection and weightedUnion set operations. ZCatalog currently gives all indexes a weight of 1 however. > I'd like to explore the possibility of searching the catalog, but > giving results from certain indexes priority over others. It is possible to implement an index whose results are scored. This is used by TextIndexes to implement relevance ranking for instance. The index just needs to return a mapping (usually a BTree) of rid->score where rid is the record id of the catalog record. ZCatalog automatically adds these scores when intersecting results across indexes. > So in the case of the CMF, saying that if search terms are found in > the Title or Descrption, they are more "important" than if they're > found somewhere else and so on ... This might be an iteresting addition to my FieldedTextIndex product. Currently all indexed fields are weighted the same, but it would be straightforward to make this configurable per field. > I know this is a common concept in more advanced search engines (Such > as Oracle's InterMedia), but I'm wondering if anyone has done > something like this in Zope ... Let me know what your specific use case is and maybe I'll add it to the FieldedTextIndex product if it fits its usage. -Casey

I dont' know if anyone has already suggested this, but have you considered using the CSS 'overflow:auto' attribute? I haven't tried it on a portion of a table but it couldn't hurt to try.. All you should need to do would be wrap a div tag around the portion of the table that you want to scroll. ... </tr> <div style="overflow:auto;" > <tr> Rows/cells that you want to scroll here </tr> </div> ... Hello! I have a problem - I don`t know how to do this: I have a ZSQL Method called 'ALL' wich returns addresses, and I also have a DTML Method. In this DTML Method I want to display every 'ALL' element (address) as a checkbox with unique name(like a1, a2, a3, a4...). How can I do this? Please, help me! Weighing catalog searches per index ?
by Jean-Francois.Doyon＠CCRS.NRCan.gc.ca 08 Jan '04

Hello, Does anybody know of a decent implementation of a scoring algorithm that does "weighing" of results, presumably based on the indexes used ? I'd like to explore the possibility of searching the catalog, but giving results from certain indexes priority over others. So in the case of the CMF, saying that if search terms are found in the Title or Descrption, they are more "important" than if they're found somewhere else and so on ... I know this is a common concept in more advanced search engines (Such as Oracle's InterMedia), but I'm wondering if anyone has done something like this in Zope ... Thanks for all the responses everyone. I actually got it all working and wrote a nice howto on ZopeLabs about it. It wasn't as straight forward as some of your responses were but that's because I had very specific things I wanted to make happen. Thanks again. kittonian -----Original Message----- From: Casey Duncan [mailto:casey@zope.com] Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2004 2:36 PM To: kittonian(a)macgenius.net Cc: arv(a)si.urv.es; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] CookieCrumbler Authentication On Wed, 7 Jan 2004 12:55:40 -0500 "kittonian" <kittonian(a)macgenius.net> wrote: > I created the cookie crumbler instance and indeed the login form says > that I've successfully logged in, however it's not exactly what I want > here. Where do I > point that form so that it calls to CC's authentication properly? You don't need to point it anywhere in particular. It can just go to the same page (i.e., <form action=".">). What matters is the names of the username and password input elements. They need to match the names configures in CookieCrumbler (__ac_name and __ac_password are the defaults). It will sniff for them on the next request and log the user in if they match a user (and you are not logged in through basic auth). > What do I call the > username and password text box form elements on my page? This is also configure in CC (defaults to login_form). Normally this would be a separate login only form where users are redirected on unauthorized. CC will handle redirecting the user back to the URL they came from. You can make this go to your home page if you like, but that will probably confuse users of the site. hth, -Casey

I created the cookie crumbler instance and indeed the login form says that I've successfully logged in, however it's not exactly what I want here. I need to use my own login page, not CC's default login page. Mine is actually the index_html with a form element in it. Where do I point that form so that it calls to CC's authentication properly? What do I call the username and password text box form elements on my page? How do I make it go to the members folder upon successfully authing? How do I set it up so that I can do various error responses in my index_html page with the form on it (i.e. people who fail to auth need to be taken back to that page and see a message above the login form telling them that it failed to auth them)? kittonian -----Original Message----- From: Alexis Roda [mailto:arv@si.urv.es] Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2004 4:29 AM To: kittonian(a)macgenius.net Subject: Re: [Zope] CookieCrumbler Authentication kittonian wrote: > Ok. When you add the CC check the "create default forms" option so CC will create some default forms (login page, logout page and failed authorization page) and customize the forms to suit your needs. When you try to access the protected area you'll get the CC's login page. Your main index_html may be just: <dtml-call expr="REQUEST.RESPONSE.redirect('url_to_protected_area')"> HTH -- //// (@ @) ---------------------------oOO----(_)----OOo------------------------ Los pecados de los tres mundos desapareceran conmigo. Envoking Zope's security manually?
by herman geldenhuys 08 Jan '04

08 Jan '04

Hi there. What is the proper way to validate zope's security in an unrestricted script? ...object = make a request object and wrap the root zope object... result = object.aq_acquire(methodName) if not AccessControl.getSecurityManager().validate(object, None, methodName, result): raise Exception('Unauthorised:' + methodName) I know this should be close to what is should be. But what about an objects properties, and accessing their __str__ and __call__ type methods. Is there a formal way of envoking Zope's security?
