Chris hails from near Philadelphia, PA and is also a recovering M$ Developer where he currently works on web applications. [newbie] making a product / Zope Content Managers guide

I have been stumbling my way through the Zope Content Managers guide (http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Guides/ZCMG/ZCMG.pdf) with varying degrees of success. I realize that the documentation is a work in progress, but right now, I am finding it to be quite confusing in parts. In particular, I am having trouble with the "Turning an Application into a Zope Product" section. I have cut and pasted the Builder and Designer DTML methods from the documentation into a new product, created a factory as instructed, but when I try to 'add' the product using the add menu, I see the Designer fill-in form as I should....but when I press submit, I get the following error :- Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: NameError Error Value: Home Troubleshooting Suggestions This resource may be trying to reference a nonexistent object or variable Home. The URL may be incorrect. The parameters passed to this resource may be incorrect. A resource that this resource relies on may be encountering an error. Has anyone successfully followed the instructions in the Zope Content Managers guide and got a working product ? thanks for any help, Darcy

Automating New users

error messages and patches

Is there any plan to have all the errors use the standard_error_message? Many of our clients want custom Unauthorized errors, for which we have to use a dtml-raise tag or modify the ZPublisher sources. Neither is ideal. The same applies to 'Resource not found' errors, except the only way to do it is to modify the source. I hate having to modify the zope source to do things, it makes upgrading a real pain (still have a couple sites running 1.10.2 because we don't have time to patch 1.10.3). I've actually got a bit of time coming up that I have earmarked for moving our stuff up to Zope2. I'd like to eliminate the need of modifying the source code as much as possible. So if noone else is working on this problem, I can do it. While on the topic of patching Zope, we have a few other patches floating around here. There's one which allows for all passwords to be encrypted (both normal and UserDB pwds) and one that adds BCC to the Mail Host. Plus a patch to mod_auth_mysql it get it to understand zope formatted roles (so you can use a mysql DB for both zope/non-zope site authentication). Can Zope be used as a CVS server?

I would like to provide an arena for multiple workers to work on a project together. Could I use Zope for the functionality of a CVS server? What about version controll? What about the batch export/import functions of CVS - how would they be executed in Zope? (Maybe this is a stupid question, since you would think that the question is answered by the simple fact that Zope source code is being kept on a CVS server. xmlrpc calls require string results?

I'm using xmlrpclib from a standalone Python script to post articles to Squishdot. It seems that calls to methods that return strings work fine, while calls to other methods fail with tracebacks like the following: Traceback (innermost last): File "./postToControlCom.py", line 77, in ? postMessage(msg) File "./postToControlCom.py", line 68, in postMessage summary, subject, "Automation List") File "./xmlrpclib.py", line 547, in __call__ return self.__send(self.__name, args) File "./xmlrpclib.py", line 630, in __request request File "./xmlrpclib.py", line 582, in request headers xmlrpclib.ProtocolError: <ProtocolError for silver.control.com/zope/: 500 Internal Server Error> This sort of thing seems to happen no matter what the non-string return type is. In the case above, the difference between the following code (which works) and the failing code is exactly the rather bogus last line: "return 'Done'". Hello, I need something similar to the member login on zope.org. At the Homepage there will be a login button. The documents shown after login should depend on the role the member has assigned (view only, maintainer, ...). Additionally I need some properties connected to the member. I know this scenario is doable with Zope I just got stuck. Please instruct me what to read or where to find an example. (I already read "Content's manager guide" but did not see any situation similar.) Zope startup questions

Hello. My name is Alexander Limi, and I am part of a project that considers very strongly to switch to Zope for our development. I have a few questions that I would like to know the answers to, so if you can assist me in this, I would be very grateful. First, a little summary of our project is probably useful: The goal of the project is a kind of a national version of mp3.com - but for Norwegian citizens (not exclusively, but this is our target audience). Currently, we have over 300 artists that each need their own management console for uploading mp3's, pitures, html etc. We originally intended to develop the project in PHP/mySQL, but quickly realised that it would be very inefficient from a developmental view. So, before we take the plunge, so to speak, I wondered if you could answer the following questions: 1. What is the status of the mod_zope development? Our ISP runs apache, and the solution with apache and PCGI is not exactly the ideal one. 2. Localization - we would like to implement the whole site in two languages - English and Norwegian. Any useful tips? Any finished Products supporting this? 3. Performance - how does zope compare to PHP/mySQL in terms of performance? Our box is a dual Pentium 180 with 224M RAM and SCSI disk subsystem running linux. 10Mbit connection to the internet. 4. Security - how secure is Zope? Our sysadmin is pretty paranoid (as he should be :), and I'm just wondering how secure it is. Field experience comments welcome :) 5. OO-database system - the default behaviour of Zope is to store everything in the database - including pictures and MP3s. We plan on distributing the MP3 files to several servers, and construct an object that analyses the load on every servers every time a user requests a download. Obviously we should separate these files from the main database, as it would become extremely big after a while. Does anybody have any experience with solutions for doing this? And would linux' 2GB limit on files pose problems for the main db-file after a while? 6. This is a bit specific, but anyway: users should be able to write "http://mp3.no/artistname" and be sent directly to the artist with that name. Does Zope have any specific mechanisms for doing this?
