Hi, Some of you may have noticed that the Zope.org web site was down for a little while this afternoon. I apologize for the inconvenience. We believe that the problem is completely nailed now, and we don't anticipate any more outages. Thanks for bearing with us. Our problems stemmed from using the latest and greatest CVS snapshots for Zope.org, rather than waiting for a solid release before migrating the site. We wanted to use exciting new Zope features on the Zope.org web site because the site is a showcase for new Zope advancements and because we wanted it to be as cool and high performance as possible. Unfortunately we ran across a bug which was quickly fixed but which caused after effects which continued to dog the site until we fixed them today. The problem had to do with the pickling of objects which should not be pickled. Now that the Zope.org site is running fairly well, and many folks are using it, we can reprioritize Zope.org towards stability. In the future we plan to run Zope.org on stable released versions of Zope. Thanks for your understanding. -Amos P.S. REMINDER: zope-dev@zope.org _does_ exist!

Just a quick reminder: there is another mailing list (zope-dev(a)zope.org) for technical questions. A quick glance through the last 50 or so zope(a)zope.org messages shows that over half of them are more appropriate for "developers" than "content managers" or a general audience. zope-dev was created namely because the community wanted to better manage the volume (read: deluge) of Zope mail. After a long discussion which generated many emails :^), the community agreed to having a list for general and introductory questions and a list focused on developers. Some example email discussion threads that could be moved over: o ZClass constructor / namespace question o Comma delimited file and the re python object o complex question (kind of an obvious one :^) o Random ID's using ZopeDate() problems... o xmlrpc calls require string results? Ken wrote a script that shows the subscription/unsubscription rate on the mailing lists. Around the time of the split we saw the ratio improve, meaning fewer people were getting frustrated. The ratio has gotten worse again. Let's work to make sure the traffic gets managed as best as possible. Thanks! --Paul

Zope Lecture & NLUUG report

Hi Zopistas, Yesterday I gave a 'Technical introduction to Zope' at the autumn conference of the NLUUG, the Dutch UNIX Users Group, a little tour of Zope in only 45 minutes. Although it was my first time presenting before a live audience (ever gave your first before a ~150 seat cinema hall?), the story came across, and many asked questions and came to have a chat with me afterwards. I spoke to many interesting and influential people there, here's a summary: - I asked Jack Janssen, maintainer of MacPython, about MacZope. Unfortunately, MacPython 1.5.2 is build upon CWGUSI 1.x, which means that it will not do threads! Jack is short of time right now, and is looking for someone to move MacPython to CWGUSI 2. It then should be quite easy to do a MacZope. - I also had a chat with Emile Heyns, one of the core developers of Midgard. He revealed to me that the Midgard team is looking at Zope a lot, they think certain ideas are very cool and want to do them too. The O'Reilly book deal has them now looking for a publisher as well. =) - Jordan K. Hubbard of the FreeBSD project couldn't tell me wether or not they are bundling Zope with their distribution yet, but a Dutch FreeBSD user said he was pretty sure he had seen it on the commit list, meaning it will be with the next incarnation of FreeBSD. - Colin Tenwick, GM of Red Hat Europe, announced that Red Hat will soon provide support for other Open Source software, depending on popularity and/or being a good alternative to proprietary software. Zope might be a candidate. He also gave me the name of the guy in charge of building the RedHat Europe website. Now all I need to do is convince him to use Zope. - And last but not least, I had a great time with Peter Honeywell, of the Linux Scalability Project, and a whole list of other titles, including secretary of USENIX. He's one cool gadgeteer. His Palm V sports a homemade chipcard reader that enabled him to hack my charge-card. He was surprised to hear there's a global lock in Python, and he thinks it'll be hard to get rid of that. Support for multiple processors is not something Python is good at. installation problems

I am running apache web server 1.3.9 on winnt server 4 and I've install zope. Unfortunatly localhost:8080 won't respond. Is there anything else to do ? Should I tell apache where to find zope or something ? How ? Thank you very much in advance for answering, Olivier.

I can understand this in principal, but methods that return simple integers fail. I'd expect xmlrpc to be able to handle them. Also some of the articles in the Byte series talk about passing structures back and forth so I assumed that the xmlrpc support was smart enought to do things like pack a list of ids (i.e. list of strings) as an XML structure on its own. The XML-dtml notation "&dtml-variable;"

Hi, I just learned about the XML-dtml notation for inserting values inside XML-strings. I find this useful, and use it both in HTML and XML. But, isn't there a way to supply a default value (if the variable lookup fails)? Something like &dtml-variable default-value; Thanks in advance, //johan

Documentation of attributes

Where can I find the list (and some kind of documentation !) of all standard attributes and methods (this(), aq-parent, ...). Hard to write any dtml method without that knowledge :-) By the way, I was testing the SimpleSiteMap example (http://www.zope.org/Members/djay/SimpleSiteMap) which recurse folder starting from aq_parent. Sometimes it works, sometimes not (empty result). Is this example out of date ? Here is some code, for the community should they find it helpful, that works with the python gd module to produce bar, line, and pie charts. I wrote it about two years ago. It's not Zope specific. It's been useful for my purposes, and I'm hoping there are some ideas in it worthy of inclusion in some greater whole. The code should be quite self explanatory, and there's a test included for each chart type. The gd module is, of course, required.
